Is there a thread for the old birds who are pregnant and over 40?

I'm on a fab thread on the ttc section but am now 7 wks preg .

I know it's early days but I wondered if there was a thread on here for the older pregnant woman who might be experiencing all the same things as me.

God, I hope I'm not tempting fate by coming over from the ttc side!!!!!

hippychick66 · 14/01/2010 20:36

God of course Chegirl. I meant to send my thoughts when I read your post and then forgot - (no brain left after motherhood).

How devastating to lose a grown child.

Sure you're family are all pulling together.

Good luck to everyone. There are lots of us due at the end of aug - how lovely - we'll all be great mates by then

MrsCrabby · 15/01/2010 13:28

Gosh, so many of us, would have been very encouraging to have found this thread when we decided to try for #2...

Somewhat nervous still as only 8 weeks and I've seen a scary number of ladies dropping off the Aug ante-natal thread... But have also been very lucky so far... DH had vasectomy reversal last Aug - he'd decided, quite rationally, 4 kids was enough for him, but it was devastating for me just to have one of my own, despite DSC's being great, it's just not the same... I had had no idea how broody you can get when you already have a child when I went along with the vasectomy... Was ecstatic when DH decided on a reversal after he realised how depressed I'd got...
To then fall pg 3 months later was the most fantastic Xmas present ever, though boy do I feel rough now!

As for reactions... We were at a dinner party recently where all talk was A levels and kids leaving home... Then we had to leave early for the babysitter, we're somewhat out of synch with a lot of our peers! But all worth it!

Best of luck to those ladies due in the next few weeks. Looking forward to news of nice straightforward labours!

bluebell6 · 15/01/2010 13:46

Hello to everyone. Great idea for a thread Hippychick66
Will you add me to your list please. Im 42 and due DC2 early July. Have DS who is 2.4. Have been on assisted conception thread since spring 09 but this pregnancy happened spontaneously in Autumn and we were very shocked but also are over the moon
Been very sick for past 10 weeks but this week it has finally stopped (was with DS too) apart from that feeling good, happy and strong. Have had scan and got test results today and they were LOW RISK
Its good to see there are so many of us, looks like we will be out in force at the school gates in a few years time

nottslass · 15/01/2010 15:01

Hi,
I was Just wondering if anybody else was being induced due to maternal age ?

I'm being induced on my EDD - my choice, although I've had a normal pregnancy & my consultant would have been happy to let me go into labour on my own,Iwas quite happy to accept the option !!

hazeyjane · 15/01/2010 16:32

I hadn't heard that about being induced, for age related reasons - do you know why that would be.

I tried to avoid being induced with dd1 and 2 (I was 36 and 37), and was 10 days over with no1 and 14 days over with no2.

ande · 15/01/2010 16:46

My consultant said depending on how things were "they" would be "slightly concerned" if I go over due due to my age. Discussions nearer the time.....

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 15/01/2010 17:03

I saw the consultant at the hospital yesterday after a scan to check on my fibroids. They are not a problem and he now said I am now considered low risk. I asked what would happen if I went overdue - hopefully this won't happen as I gave birth the day after I was due with dd1 - and he said nothing until I was 10 days overdue - same as for anyone else.

hippychick66 · 15/01/2010 17:54

Can't believe how many of us there are so quickly - fab!

I would avoid being induced if I could help it. I was so lucky with both my labours and I'm sure it's cos my body was ready to do it by itself. I haven't even seen the midwife yet so i don't know what extra treats I'll get for being so old . Maybe she will say about induction or extra checks etc.

bluebell how wonderful that it all happened naturally for you. great surprise i'll bet.

Did another preg test this morning and what do you know - still pregnant - I am officially mad

OP posts:
schipo · 15/01/2010 18:50

Yeah i'm really happy to see so many other people pregnant at 40. Sad to read about all the lost pregnancies people have had though.
Fingers crossed for us all this time, of course.

Chegirl yours sounds like a terrible loss. V sorry to hear!

I saw consultant yesterday for first time. She sounded surprised that I'd had a spontaneous conception, and couldn't find any reason for
me to be considered high risk apart from the fact of my age (at least not now after I got good CVS test results).

I asked if I'd be induced early because of my age because I did read that that happens somewhere, can't remember where now though.
She said that would only happen if I developed pre-eclampsia or something. I'd asked the sonographer at last scan too and she said they don't do that anymore.
Just hoping this baby doesn't decide to wait too long.

Good luck for everyone with imminent due dates. I've updated list with mine.

MrsCrabby · 15/01/2010 18:51

I think the reason some consultants don't like us elderly mums to go past our due dates is the higher risk of the placenta giving up too soon.
I was 2 weeks over with DS and he was tiny... Mutterings of placental insufficiency at the time.
Maybe I'll get an early induction this time and guarantee an August baby... Who was it who said that would save a fortune on Childcare? Makes a change from the usual advice to hold tight and make them oldest in the year

nottslass, did your consultant give you any reason for the optional induction?

nottslass · 15/01/2010 19:11

MrsCrabby - My consultant said that there is some evidence (although not conclusive) that the placenta stops working sooner in the "more mature" woman.

This pregnancy was IVF so I'm 100% sure of the conception date & given the success rates(very low) and the MC rate for the over 40's I feel as if I've beaten the odds by getting this far & don't want to tempt fate (although I know the risk is very small)

My other 2 DS were also induced because I was over due so the thought of an induced labour doesn't bother me - infact the thought that it will all be over in a week or so makes me very happy indeed !!!

PumaGirl · 15/01/2010 19:18

Thanks for putting me on the list curlylox.

liahgenisuptheduff · 15/01/2010 21:04

Hi all.

Well had my boking in today and no mention of high risk due to age. I am however high risk due to previous obstetric cholestasis, polyhydramnios and 3 mc's!! That's enough reason she said. I don't mind, I know the drill by now. No mention of my having had many babies either.

will get scan in couple weeks or so I guess so that'll benice, I just want to make sure there's only one in there. I've said in the past I'd love twins but realistically I don't think being #6 and 7 would be quite as easy as #1 and 2 or #3 and 4 maybe.

Do we have any twins on here, they do say the chance is higher in the more mature woman.

cauliflowr not long to go now, our first labour, that's one to look forward to.

Ok, CBB is calling to me. Have good weekend everyone.

SmileyMylee · 15/01/2010 21:41

Added myself to the list. 43 and expecting number 4. Hope baby is on time or early as if late won't get him/her into the DC current school as won't qualify under the sibling rules. (why am I even worrying about this at 9 weeks!)

negrilbaby · 15/01/2010 22:40

As said previously had DS at 41 and when I met the consultant at the hospital (the first medical male I encountered through the pregnancy)he decided that because of my age and possibly large baby he wanted to induce me on my due date. I wasn't happy but then he started talking about increased risk of still birth in older mothers - so I gave in. The induction wasn't very successful - 28 hours later and the final stage of labour still hadn't started. I was attached to a monitor on a tiny bed throughout. When they refused to let me eat I begged for a cs. Got that a few hours later!
Not sure what to think about this one. Due date is 7th July and have first appointment to discuss VBAC at end of June!

HeighHo · 16/01/2010 13:20

Hi Liaghen, yup me. At my 7 week scan they found 2 heartbeats all measuring fine for 7 weeks. Am completely freaked out by the increased risks of a twin preg, and the unbelievably hard work once they arrive (though am also aware that nothing is for certain after 5 mc in a row)

Got another scan at 9 weeks.

Hope everyone else is OK x

HeighHo · 16/01/2010 19:38

So sorry, Negrilbaby, had not read your post. What a terrible time you had before. Very good luck with discussions about birth this time. Do you want a VBAC?

negrilbaby · 17/01/2010 14:21

Not sure about VBAC - anyone have any experience?
I had gestational diabetes last pregnancy and DS1 was 9lbs. Have GTT next week to check again.
If this new one is likely to be large as well I'm thinking that I'd like to have a planned CS. Last one was fine. I was in a lot less pain than a number of other mothers who delivered naturally but ended up tearing.
Looking at the size of my bump already (at 16 weeks 4) either baby is growing fast or I overindulged way too much at Christmas!

MrsMopple · 17/01/2010 23:10

Hi Ladies, please can I join you? I found out I was pregnant on December 16th after 3 year ttc #2 and a chemical pregnancy in Nov 2008. I'm 40.
I don't feel at all pregnant and went for a viability scan at 7 + 4 last week and got the same shock as Heigh Ho in that there were 2 little hearbeats in there .
I'm not as excited / delighted as other people seem to be about the twins thing, and am anxious about the extra complications that twins bring with them.
If someone could add me to the list that'd be great!
Mrs Mopple 40, #2 and #3 due August 28th

How exciting to have 3 babies due here in the next few days.

HeighHo · 18/01/2010 13:02

Mrs Mopple, I agree completely, am not excited about twins as can only see all the negatives and am, presumably a high risk pregnancy, being 42 and having twins . Was looking forward to being preg with one SO much as have always sailed through, now am feeling utterly drained and exhausted (though might be psychosomatic). Think my due date is the same as yours, so let's worry together about our twin pregnancies - glad it's not just me

Hello to everyone else x

Clydesdaleclopper · 18/01/2010 16:46

Hi, I just got my BFP so I'm due no 2 in September when I'll be 40.

I'm glad I'm not alone
