40 + mums with baby tums & those who've already 'popped' with muffin tops - come say Hi!

Yet ANOTHER thread. Like it says - those of you who've waved bye bye to 39 come and say Hi to us instead.

We think that 40 is the new 20, cyber cake is the new weight-watchers and older mums rock

So, if you fit that description come and play with us. We like cake, gossip an occasional luke warm debate and a good moan! Oh and we're also very friendly and supportive!

OK everyone.....take it away x

Tee2072 · 18/02/2009 20:59

ooh, pretty new thread!

Thanks JJ

ermintrude13 · 18/02/2009 21:12

Ta for doing that JJ.

Book launches - I have been to many and because they usually take place early evening they tend to be much drabber than they sound - the publishing types wear their office suits, the writer tries to scrub up a bit and her/his friends wear inappropriately posh clothing out of sheer excitement and on the assumption that it's all very glam. HOWEVER if it's later, and/or in a v posh restaurant, you could push the boat out. Check with your friend first. For me these days, pushing the boat out means wearing something other than jeans and slapping on some lippie...

Other than that I have just two words to say to you, and those words are almost as sweet as 'lemon' and 'drizzle'. They are:

Creme Eggs

'Tis the season...

Tee2072 · 18/02/2009 21:31

oooooooooh creme eggs..of course, they've been around since Xmas this year..

hedgepig · 18/02/2009 21:33

Ermintrude the ms must be getting better if you can even whisper the words Cream Egg, they make me feel sick even when not pg.

We have had a very exciting evening running around museums in Cambridge with torches because they were open late but with no lights there were 1000's of children all hyped up bril brill brill.

hedgepig · 18/02/2009 21:35

JW boo about the op but can they do the keyhole thing now, is she big enough?

ermintrude13 · 18/02/2009 21:42

hedgepig sadly the ms makes me feel sick after eating a banana or half a grapefruit but the sugar rush of a creme egg has no ill effects, and tastes divine. Also doesn't taste too bad on the way back up... It's not right and it's not clever and I'm not proud - but don't deny me this tiny pleasure amongst so much nausea.

Open museums sounds great - they have those days in London where all historic houses open up for free, but night-time opening and torches sounds much better!

mrsboogie · 18/02/2009 22:04

oooh that sounds great hedgepig it would give you a different perspective by torchlight - wouldn't fancy it round the York Dungeon museum thingy tho. eeek.

cream eggs ermintrude The Yuck.

Yay. Grand designs.

hedgepig · 18/02/2009 22:06

if you can keep it down go for it Ermintrude I really understand does it taste good on the way back principle .
I was just talking to DH about how absolutely awful I felt this time last year and now I feel fab, sleep deprived but fab.

Neddie · 19/02/2009 08:03

I still can't sleep. I was up till the wee hours watching "The Night of the Living Dead"- I know how they feel. I am now seriously thinking of emigrating to Germany as I am so depressed without DP. DD2 was sick in her bed last night just to round off the evening. Oh sorry whinging.
ermintrude sorry about your sickness, I had vile sickness with number 1, not so bad with number 2, and apart from just feeling yuck about food I haven't been sick once with these two. I managed Baked potato with Wensleydale last night and some soup for lunch.
EXITING EH ?

jeanjeannie · 19/02/2009 09:27

Morning girls - shabby night again...huge sympathies all round to the non-sleepers
Had to get up at 6am as DP got up then and makes SO much noise you can't sleep through it

Creme eggs are sick. They're smoothed sick in a choccy coating - that's probably when ermintrude finds they're not too unpleasant on the way back up

hedgepig that sounds such a fabulous evening.

Horrid day ahead - got to stay in for most of it as I'm waiting for garden deliveries and it's a nice day. I can see frayed nerves and a battle of wills about to commence

ladymac · 19/02/2009 11:00

Morning all. Can't believe how quickly this thread moves on. Well done jj, you are the queen of new thread titles!

It's been an exciting week of medical appointments here. Went to the GP on tuesday and got a prescription for Ranitidine as my Gaviscon habit was failing me. Have since had 2 nights free of the 1am acid in the mouth wake up. Yesterday was an appt with the midwife and guess what girls, the baby is head down Yes, it's in position with 7 or so weeks to go. Today we're seeing the audiology consultant, who hasn't seen Elizabeth since she was first diagnosed. Hoping for a nice straightforward visit and that the cold and cough that she's developed over the last few days won't affect anything.

johnworf Sorry to hear that surgery is still on the cards for lovely Katherine. Do you know when she'll have to have it? Must be awful to have that hanging over you when she's doing so well.

Have an ebay question for jw and any of you that are experts. I'm an ebay virgin, having neither bought nor sold anything, although I often window shop. You probably know I've been searching for a double buggy (but don't want a side by side) and that Elizabeth has to face me due to her hearing problems. I've found one I really like the look of and there is only one on ebay. It's got a starting price of £250 and a buy it now price of £350. But when I entered a bid it said I hadn't reached the reserve price, which could for all I know be £345. This seems really cheeky to me. There have been no bids in the 4 days it's been on so far. Anybody care to have a look at it? The 2 bids are the ones I tried, for £250 and £255. Would love your advice. Also on what you think of the pushchair.

Tee2072 · 19/02/2009 11:07

Can't help on the EBay thing, sorry ladymac, I am also EBay virgin! But yayayay for head down!

JJ I'm with you on the shabby night thing. Baby decided to kick bladder at 4:30a and then do the hula for awhile. And when I bitch to my so called friends about being tired? All I get is 'wait 'til the baby's here, you'll never sleep again, blah blah blah'. Yeah. Thanks for the sympathy.

neddie whinge away! That's what we're here for!

Now I want a creme egg...

jeanjeannie · 19/02/2009 11:19

ladymac I so wish I'd gone for one of those Everest buggy things there are 2 bids on it now...MMMmmm, think you do need jw!

Have you checked the website direct - only that I read on another website that they didn't charge P&P from NZ!?!! Maybe worth having a look.

Ranitidfine is indeed marvellous! Well done on an engaged head....get ready!! And hope all goes well this afternoon. We have our first speech therapy playgroup on Monday - I've very excited to get moving on it all!

JW ...... OI....where are you?!

OP posts:
ermintrude13 · 19/02/2009 11:34

last night JW and Kaz were on the old thread so I left a msg telling 'em to c'mon over.

Tee boo to unsympathetic friends. They either can't imagine what it's like, or they've forgotten. People love doing that ' hoho, you'll be eating for 2 / licking coal / getting all hormonal 'wisdom' and I don't think they realise how it can make a girl. Just go la la la and think of creme eggs (ha! I knew somebody else must like 'em. {whispers] I'd rather have a creme egg than any 5 Thornton's continentals

ladymac not sure about the buggy, sorry. They're more expensive new, I know that, but Ebay expert JW is required here!

Good news about head down baby. Odd feeling in the last few weeks though, when the head engages (although they don't do that as much after the first, do they? I think they wait till just before contractions start and then assume dive position )

neddie and jj sorry to hear you had a bad night; hope you catch up on sleep later or tonight!

johnworf · 19/02/2009 11:46

I've been lurking on the old thread thinking 'where the bloody hell is everyone today?' I'm a thicko though and didn't read JJ's post properly. Duh!

Ebay. Ok. Means the seller has put a reserve on it so that it doesn't sell for tuppence halfpenny. Buggy looks super dooper to me. I'd put bids on increments of £5 and see if you can find the reserve....however! word of caution...don't go above what you want to spend just for the hell of finding it otherwise you'll be paying over the odds. Tis an easy trap to fall into for sure.

I saw a twin buggy here that I've never seen before. Dunno any details about it I'm afraid, but it is unusual.

K's surgery will be in through her groin - so yes, keyhole. Still a trauma with the general and all. Plus an overnight stay in Liverpool as that's our nearest that does the procedure. No cardio appointment until end of March so we'll see the surgeon then and see what he says. She should be the right weight by then to have the less invasive procedure done.

Have done my blood sugars this morning as I've been feeling crap. Almost pregnant in fact which I'm 100% sure I'm not. Sick, dizzy etc. They're borderline for fasting so I'll let my GP know on Monday when I see him. Balderdash. Hopefully summat of nuffink.

ladymac · 19/02/2009 11:55

Meant to say welcome to triggles. Your children are as spaced out as mine, except I popped out a 12 year old too. Are you on a 2nd marriage? Hope that's not being too nosey Can't believe you are younger than me (I'm 45) and a grandparent. What's that like? My 24 year old DD1 is quite broody but I'm hoping she holds off till I've got time to appreciate them!

ermintrude home births are great aren't they? I had DD1 in hospital then DS and DD2 at home. Decided to have Elizabeth in hospital due to the 10 year gap since I'd had Grace. However I did regret the decision afterwards. I'd never had even a whiff of gas and air with the first 3 but practically begged for pain relief when I got to the hospital in labour with E. I thought I'd gone in advanced labour but when I was examined I was only 3 cm dilated, whereas I'd been sure they would have a look and say 9cm. The pain was so intense that I didn't think I could cope for another 7cm. I asked for an epidural but the midwife said I couldn't have one as I wasn't in established labour. It was at this point I wanted to kill her! So I asked what I could have and when she said pethedine I would quite happily have injected it myself, I was that desperate. In the 2 minutes she was gone to get the pethedine my waters broke. I had the injection, she left the room and I felt the urge to push. I felt really panicky as I knew I couldn't push when only 3cm dilated. DH went to find her with me trying in vain not to push. When she came in and examined me I was 10cm! I'd gone from 3 to 10 in less than half an hour. One big push and out came Elizabeth The whole labour was under 3 hours.

Of course, the pethedine only started kicking in at that point, which when I look back at it I was glad of as E was born with a huge lump on her neck called a Cystic Hygroma and I was very relaxed about it. Being drugged up to the eyeballs I would have been relaxed about most things at that point. Because of the lump we would have been transferred to hospital even if I had given birth at home so we were in the best place to have it looked at immediately.

I don't know what to do this time around. If it's going to go that quickly again I'd rather be at home. My consultant won't give this her blessing as I'm at high risk of haemorrhaging, this being my 5th baby. Midwives agree with the high risk thing. However, all of them understand that I feel my labour was not well managed last time, with the midwife very quick to give me pain relief rather than reassure me that things were likely to move fast because it was 4th labour, not examine me after waters went etc. After I discussed this with the consultant, she said 'well of course, if you were to labour so quickly that you had no time to get to the hospital then of course we'd send a midwife out to you and that would be that', which I assume was her way of saying I can't give you permission for a home birth given your high risk of bleeding but I can't deny you one if that's what you really want.

Sorry, I have rambled on and on. Needed to write it all down I think. Hope you all understand and will bear with me while I weigh up all the pros and cons. Happy to hear the views of anybody that wants to chip in.

FloriaTosca · 19/02/2009 11:56

Ladymac Fab news about baby being head down already. Sorry I can't help you with the e-bay thing as I haven't done much on there..though if you have bid as much as you want and no one bids more I believe the seller can contact you and sell it to you for the price you offered ..the stroller looks good and it certainly comes with lots of extras.......though to put you off balance...the most versatile twin buggy I have seen is this...you can get it a bit cheaper on other sites but this site shows you all the combinations available....If only I could talk Dh into #2 it is the one I would be looking at[sigh]. Hope you get the one you want at the right price.

FloriaTosca · 19/02/2009 11:58

bother...JW got to it before me!!!!!

ladymac · 19/02/2009 12:15

Took me so long to bore you all write that last post that I missed the replies to my ebay question. Thanks jw I'll try that, which is kind of what I started earlier. That's why it says 2 bids jj, they're both from me.

Not sure what I think it's worth to be honest. They're about £600 new which I can't afford. Have heard that they are very good and sturdy plus I think Elizabeth would love being up high and I presume that come the summer she'll be wanting to walk more anyway. jw that buggy you linked to is very swanky but I think like a lot of the doubles I've looked at, it's aimed more at the twin market rather than at a toddler and a newborn.

I will have £190 to put towards it (ermintrude, tee and other pregnant ladies take note) as I'll be getting the 'Health in Pregnancy' grant from the government. Your midwife will give you the form from 25 weeks on and the money is paid straight in to your bank account. Marvellous. I shan't argue the whys and wherefores of it, I'm just happy that I'm being given £190

mrsboogie · 19/02/2009 12:53

hello all

Just popping in during me lunch hour to say hello.

Back at work and being bombarded with clever stuff but seem to have left my brain (or, more likely, my inclination) elsewhere. My little man is with his grandpa who totally dotes on him and can have him all to himself for the day as it is half term. Didn't want to leave him this morning as he was being such a yummy little sausage but hey ho. I have to admit that yesterday I extra specially appreciated having him all to myself and we had lots of fun. I think that being parted from him will make me a better mummy in some ways.

ladymac fantastic news on the LO's promptness in getting into position. Seven weeks - its flying past now! Has anyone explained to you what they actually mean by "high risk of bleeding"? how high is high?

tee well it's true that you will be tired when the LO is here - but that is sleep deprivation and is quite different to pregnancy exhaustion plus your OH will be knackered too and you won't be alone in your suffering!. Have you checked whether your iron levels are ok?

jw not good re the blood sugars - time to get back on the diet! less weight = less insulin resistance. I am in a state of shock having been confronted with the sight of myself in full lenght toilet mirrors here at work. I look dreadful and huge. It really is time for Drastic Measures now.

ladymac · 19/02/2009 13:09

Just a quick one tee before we nip off to the hospital as mrsb said just what I was going to. Got some blood test results back yesterday when I saw the midwife at the clinic and my haemoglobin (sp?) levels showed that I was borderline anaemic. I've been tired and lacking energy so am not surprised - though taking to my bed is not an option with Elizabeth keeping me on my toes! Have been given some Pregaday so hope they'll kick in over the next few days and I'll be ready to conquer the world

mrsb sounds like all is going okay and so glad you had a lovely day with little D yesterday. I hate the phrase 'quality time', it sounds so American (apologies tee!) but there is some truth in it, especially (and apologies for the generalisation) when you think of how many full-time mums sit the kids in front of the TV all day long.

jeanjeannie · 19/02/2009 13:15

That's good - most of us present and correct, excellent!

ladymac hahaha on the £190 - that's meant for 'good food' isn't it? That's the one I wanted to get and blow it all at the Fat Duck.....or Le Manoir.....cos that's 'Good Food' I expect to see you creeping up the bidding in £5 increments!

Oooo I LOVE that buggy - such a good idea. Wish I'd seen that one too - although I suspect it don't come cheap!

mrsB stop looking at yourself in the full length mirrors - never a good idea! Neck up only!!! It's the way forward!

Still waiting for deliveries - grrr. And Verity will NOT go to sleep. She lasts 20 mins then starts shrieking. She has pretty much never slept in the day - it's a faff

OP posts:
johnworf · 19/02/2009 13:16

ladymac I meant to ask you ages ago, did you remember to get your DLA claim form in for Betsy? It's really worth it and you can claim your working family tax credit rebate too.

Yeah, that double buggy is a bit swanky as you say. When my older ones were little, I had baby in the silver cross pram and a pram seat on the top. I've noted that pram seats have made a come back and I've even seen new ones for sale (I think mine was from the 60's that someone gave to me).

Hope you're having a nice lunch break mrsb and I'm sure that D appreciates his mummy all that bit more now she's sometimes having to work

My DD#1 is 23 today. I don't know whether to laugh or cry At least I'm not a grannie yet. Couldn't cope with that...not ready. Especially as I've got a baby under 1 myself. That would be TOO surreal even for me.

Just noticed from the last post I left on the old thread, K and Verity are in fact almost 9 months old and not 8 months as previously stated. I can't even add up these days
