Yet ANOTHER thread. Like it says - those of you who've waved bye bye to 39 come and say Hi to us instead.

We think that 40 is the new 20, cyber cake is the new weight-watchers and older mums rock

So, if you fit that description come and play with us. We like cake, gossip an occasional luke warm debate and a good moan! Oh and we're also very friendly and supportive!

OK everyone.....take it away x

Eulia your mum sounds a bit like mine I didn't tell her I was pg unil well after 20 weeks.

Next time she says anything like that you should say "I will be sure to tell your grandson/daughter when he or she is old enough that you wanted me to get rid of them"

Two can play at that game!

ermintrude13 · 19/02/2009 16:48

Eulalia, what is your mum's problem?! Try to just protect yourself from the stuff she's saying and work your own way through what's going on and what your decisions will depend upon, don't be forced into saying something to satisfy her (I'd be tempted to say something v rude to her!).

I didn't go for amnio or CVS - my odds after NT scan were 320:1 which is 99.7% in favour of not having a baby with Downs, and the Edwards and Patou etc. were way lower, but even if it had been higher there was no point going any further because I wouldn't have terminated. I only went for the NT scan so that we could be prepared if the odds looked higher. Some of the women on this thread have gone for it, some haven't, it's something for you and DP to work out between you, without nosey mothers and their unhelpful comments!

JJ and brandybuck hands off Chris, he's mine all mine. It's that slightly sarcy tone he has, and that little smile he does when he's talking to camera and the puppets are off-screen but you can tell they're doing things to him. Tickling him maybe.... or stroking his knee.... or something.

Goodness,

johnworf · 19/02/2009 16:55

Eulalia, poor you. Your mother sounds like a witch, I'm sorry but she does. What an awful thing to say to you when you're already nervous about the tests.

mum41 Katherine has a PDA and the procedure we're hoping she'll get is this one Puts my mind at some ease as it's not the open heart surgery we were scared with when she was first diagnosed. Btw, PDA's are very common in prems but the Indomethycin didn't work (it's hit and miss) and it looks as though it's not going to close on it's own (with growth). At least you've been through the whole op routine yourself with yours. It's just scary isn't it? She's already had one procedure done on her eyes and that was really horrible

MUM41plus5 · 19/02/2009 17:25

jw Sounds to me that procedure would put my mind at a little more ease rather than the option of open heart surgey and I know it's often said but modern medicine is amazing and thank you for taking the time out to give me the information to understand!!!
We were lucky with the boys they shrank down to normal size before medical intervention was needed. (their belly buttons that is, not the boys themselves)

Neddie · 19/02/2009 17:37

johnworf that was interesting reading- it does look a better option than the open heart surgery. I remember getting worried when my DD2 was born with a hole in the heart even though they said it would mend in a few days (they were right)as it was quite common. They are amazing nowadays with the technology. My mother is on about her 5th or 6th operation in 2 years for bowel cancer and what they've done is truly miraculous.

Tee2072 · 19/02/2009 18:11

Hi ladies!

Yes, mrsb my iron levels are fine. Its just pregnancy exhaustion!

JW sorry about K's surgery. What a worry that is for you and your DH. I'm sure she'll be fine. And do get your sugars checked out. It is possible for GD to morph into Type II, but it also usual for it to be controlled by diet at that point.

JJ re the grant...even our Midwife at our early pregnancy class said 'yeah, like anyone is actually going to spend it on food! I would bet you're already eating well. Spend it on a pram!'

neddie anyone in the UK with a baby due after April this year (I think it is) gets this grant. It is not at all needs based. You get the form from your Midwife at 25 weeks and bobs your uncle!

Welcome mrsbrandybuck! Glad you found us!

Eulalia what an awful thing for your mum to say. I think I would disown mine if she said something similar.

As for me, Boss approved the work 4 days from now on and go off on leave with 2 weeks holiday before starting my actual maternity leave. He's even letting me take each Friday as a holiday, as opposed to dropping me to 4 days and pro rating my salary. So that was a good day!

So I start my leave on 18th May...counting the days!

Triggles · 19/02/2009 20:33

mrsbrandybuck welcome!

Wow - I missed 24 hours and a new thread and 3 pages already! That'll teach me!

My DD very kindly gave me her cold - so I'm sniffing and sneezing with a lovely headache today. FIL is in dreadful condition in hospital, and we're trying to help MIL out and visit when we can. DS & DIL (with grandson) popped in for a visit in the middle of the day and stayed for a few hours. Lovely to see them, but poor DH works nights (and they KNOW this!) but completely managed to interrupt his sleep for the day, so he's exhausted and has to work again tonight. So bit of a wipe out kind of day here.

Tomorrow is my glucose tolerance test - so 3 hours at maternity section of hospital. Oh joy. Only up side is I get a peaceful 3 hours to read while I'm there - already have a couple books packed in my bag. Knowing me, I'll probably fall asleep in the chair!

Had no cake today - but DH did order pizza delivery for tea, so I'm happy - no cooking, no cleanup!

ladymac · 19/02/2009 21:28

mum41 lol at your boys shrinking to normal size!

ermintrude I don't know what the percentage risks are for post partum haemorrhage, I just know that I'm considered high risk because I'm an multipara elderly gravida, or something like that. Sexy sounding, isn't it? It's the number of times I've given birth combined with my age that gives me a higher risk factor. Nobody is going to stop me giving birth at home, it's more to do whether I feel comfortable with it all.

Triggles · 19/02/2009 21:45

ladymac that's interesting - I've never been told that for me all - in fact, nobody seems too concerned about my age or my weight (which is always refreshing, I suppose!)

palmetto · 19/02/2009 22:10

Hello all - I'm new to the post, but I tick all the boxes - 40, ds1 18m, dc2 due Sep - would love to join the conversation. Unfortunately I also work full-time so not lots of time for chat, but I could sure use the outlet when I can!

I am now 11 weeks pregnant and I look enormously pregnant! Trouble is, I haven't told work yet, although I doubt it will take too long for them to notice! Anyone else find that with number 2 and being 40+ that you seemed to pop sooner?

Just wanted to say hello. Sadly I'm off to bed now, but hope to log on again soon. Nice to have 'met' everyone - thanks to FloriaTosca for the introductions!

Tee2072 · 20/02/2009 06:36

Morning.

Ug, been up since 4. Both baby gymnastics (so much for hoping for a good sleeper!!) and snoring husband. Oh and needing a wee, of course!!

triggles the only time my OB has mentioned my age was when we were discussing possibilities for Downs etc. Other than that not been an issue. Also, haven't been weighed since my booking in! That last part has my mum stunned.

Welcome palmetto and congrats on the new little one on the way! I work also, so not around much during the day!

johnworf · 20/02/2009 08:05

Morning ladies. Welcome palmetto We're all ancient on here so sit yourself down and join in the fun

tee I'm afraid that pregnancy goes in phases so where your LO is bouncing around inside you now, give it a few weeks and he/she will be pressing all your insides to the back and your bladder will be the size of a sprout. The kicks become proper punches and you'll feel like someone has put a wardrobe inside your stomach. Other than that, it's great! Still, not for long and then the real worrying can begin....and welcome to our popped out world then Anyway, you can start enjoying some feet up time now before LO does arrive - and you should make the most of it, believe me

Thanks ladies for taking some time out of your busy schedules to peruse what's going on with K. Btw, she has no obvious symptoms of this condition but it is better to get it sorted out before any can appear. And once they do appear then I am told this is where the problems start.

tee I was told sooooooooo many times that my GD could turn into type ii diabetes that I used to mime the words as the docs were saying them! I'm going to mention it at my docs appointment on Monday and see what he says. I've already attended the diabetes clinic a few months back and all was well so I'll see what happens.

Had a lovely evening out with DD#1 + family + b/f's family. All 11 of us had a chinese banquet. Me and DD#1 were giggling all night inbetween her going to the loo with her IBS and me hugging her telling her I couldn't believe how quickly she'd grown up....23 just seems so old But it was a great evening and fab to see all of my big little ones together. I felt like one of those jewish mothers, hugging them all whilst scolding them at the same time for not visiting me enough.

Blimey floria you're on the ball this morning

I forgot to mention in my last post, had a rather saucy dream involving David Mitchell. Obviously he'll have to go on my list now. He's a bit young for me but he acts much older than he really is so that's ok........I think

FloriaTosca · 20/02/2009 09:57

G'd Mornin'JW
Not exactly on the ball...just the consequences of having a child of the non-sleeping variety [yawn]
I've just been (desperately)trying to drum up enthusiasm for a Macmillan Cancer Support Concert on the Charities Board here if any Northerners are interested.
How nice to be having saucy dreams sadly mine were about WW1 soldiers cholking from gas..only to wake myself cholking/coughing from my rotten cold ....as if Alex doesnt wake me enough....

johnworf · 20/02/2009 10:06

chuckling at you coughing with the gas/cold. Good job you weren't dreaming about eating a giant marshmallow

I would very much love to go to the RNCM however, I'd be on my own due to DH having to mind children AND having a culture bypass (his passport states Occupation: Philistine ). Are you going floria? If you are, then I could meet up with you (?) I think there's a couple of us northerners on this thread so mebbe they'd be interested too?? Would like to support Macmillian as they were very good to my MiL last year when she was diagnosed. If anyone is thinking of going, let me know.

Tee2072 · 20/02/2009 10:11

Okay, so y'all know that coworker I was complaining about? The one who keeps telling me how things must be done?

She just offered me, free of charge, her Maxi Cosi car seat that her daughter is out growing. Won't even consider money for it.

::hangs head in shame::

johnworf · 20/02/2009 10:30

haha tee How bad do you feel about slagging her off now? Ah well, I'm sure she deserved it at the time.

We're just about to buy a new car seat too. The one I've got is rubbish. It's a M&P Primo Viaggio SiP with the IsoFix base. It weighs a tonne and is not good to fit. Think we're going to go for one of these 0-4 years jobbies so once it's fitted in there, that's it. Think the Maxi Cosi ones have good reviews though tee.

mrsboogie · 20/02/2009 10:32

mornin all

oh tee isn't it terrible when annoying people suddenly turn around and surprise you with their niceness!? Have had that happen before with co-workers. You should take her up on it - the bloody things are expensive enough and don't last long.

Had the most dreadful night ever with D. He was at his grandparents yesterday who are rather lax in the whole napping/feeding department so he had about a third of his usual amount of food/milk. So, he was up all night taking an ounce of milk then falling to sleep, then waking up hungry half an hour later. I'm not exaggerating - all night it was. The week had been going v well until that point too!. I can hardly see straight.

welcome to mrsbrandybuck and palmetto

Tee2072 · 20/02/2009 10:40

And now she's also offered me her Bumble seat, has told me she's gotten the baby some clothes, and was going to give me her Moses Basket, but I am going to buy an Amby.

I hate it when this happens.

FloriaTosca · 20/02/2009 10:55

JW; Oh yes I'm most certainly going to be there..got my seat already booked (on the stage)but would love to meet up after the show.

TeeWe had the Maxi Cosi Cabrio Fix with the easy base...it was fab, easy to move fromone car to another, fitted on the quinny buzz frame too (which we are still using as a round the shop push chair)..loved it.. hang your head in shame and say "ta very much". JW We now have the Maxi Cosi Tobi we haven't isofixed it (though you can) because we swap it from one car to the other all the time but it is rock solid even on a safteybelt, lovely and comfy (or so he looks) easy to buckle and not too difficult to clean...certainly worth a look.

pintofstella · 20/02/2009 10:56

Hi Girls, mind if I join you?

I was 41 last month and have a 5.5 yr old DS. Second baby due in 6 weeks time.

Am fed up with being pg. Can't sleep, can't eat anything after lunch and am permanently knackered. Apart from that it's been a piece of cake.

Plan to have this one at home.

Tee2072 · 20/02/2009 10:59

Welcome pintofstella!! Love your name, BTW!

floria we don't have a car so was going to get the Maxi Cosi because it is apparently really easy to strap into any car with the shoulder belt. And it fits in 99% of the cars out there.

Now I just have to pick out a pram...

mrsboogie · 20/02/2009 11:36

tee I think that car seat fits most buggies - its great when they do as I prefer using the car seat as the buggy seat at the moment as it looks nicer and is higher so baby is closer to you and it means less stuff to put in the boot when you are going shopping etc.
