@avocadotoast11 I can't really explain it scientifically (or properly 😂) but it needs to be built up in your body to support the baby growing the way it needs to. That's why it's reccomended to take it even before trying to conceive. It still gets to baby through your system, and the yolk sac.

mamatotwo98 · 15/05/2026 07:25

@Ncl31thanks for asking! I’m feeling quite overwhelmed and at the time I couldn’t quite take in what the sonographer was saying. Just going to sit with my feelings for a while coming to terms with it! But happy overall xx

I have the opposite - I normally love food and eat meat and fish regularly because I like the taste, but right now fish is a no and meat is quite difficult to get down 😆 I’m trying to eat meat every couple of days because of iron, as well as taking my vitamins, but also in the first trimester babies have enough nutrition from the yolk sac right??

something that doesn’t make sense to me and maybe I should ask ChatGPT or do some research is how on one hand the embryo is dependent only on the yolk sac in the first weeks (and this makes sense as some women are vomitting a lot, and yet babies are still fine) but at the same time you’re told it’s imperative to get folic acid? But how does it reach the embryo if it is only feeding from the yolk sac at the start?

anyone with a biology-related degree care to explain? 😆

Aww bless you, it’s so tough the first trimester!

haha these are all excellent questions 😂 good point too

Hi all! Just checking in to the new thread. I was cautious about being on a December thread as was right at the end of the year! However…went for a scan last night to be told that it was identical twins! Two heartbeats in one sac and it was potentially the biggest shock of my life. This was our unexpected (not unwanted) 3rd baby and so to find out it’s 3 & 4 has been wild! So I’m thinking I indeed will be a December (or earlier) mama now!

Wow that must have been such a shock! Congratulations though 😊

Desperatelyseekingme · 15/05/2026 07:34

Omg @mamatotwo98 congratulations identical twins how lovely x

Totally random but just doing my make up for work and have discovered my eyelashes look amazing dr google says it's common I think I will keep this symptom!!

Ahhh congratulations!! I bet that was a shock. This exact thing happened to my aunt. She had surprise twins after already having two boys - now she has four boys (enough for a family five-a-side team). They're all adults now and doing well.

NewAgeDawning · 15/05/2026 08:55

@mamatotwo98wow amazing! So glad youre pleased and that your unexpected reality is slowly sinking in xx

Has anyone else lost weight over the first trimester? My husband commented that I was getting a rounded stomach and bigger boobs last night, so out of curiosity I stood on the scales this morning assuming I’d gained weight. I’ve actually lost almost 2kg since I logged my weight as part of registering my pregnancy. I’m 8 + 3 so I think I’ve lost about 0.5kg a week. I’m panicking I’ve hurt my baby. My book says I should have gained a couple of kilos. I also don’t understand how I’ve lost weight. I’ve had really bad sickness but I’ve been trying to eat every couple of hours. Plus carbs like crisps and white bread have actually been some of the easier things to eat recently. I don’t understand why I’m losing weight - what am I doing wrong? 😢

Emilymombite · 15/05/2026 09:21

I'm 11 weeks and the only things keeping me upright are cold ginger tea, plain crackers next to the bed before I sit up, and cold cucumber slices. If you haven't asked your GP about vitamin B6 25mg three times a day, do — it's NHS-recognised first-line for nausea and took the edge off for me by week 9. T1 is genuinely the worst.

Alwaysgrowing · 15/05/2026 10:10

Avocado toast. I didn't even know human embryos had a yolk sack so I've been reading about them. I've not had an early scan and I assumed there's just the one sac that's there the whole pregnancy. So interesting. But no, unfortunately they are not like chick yolks that provide all the nutrients they need but a 'pre-placenta' that provides connection between the embryo and mother. I think some sickness can indicate a strong pregnancy as the hormones that sustain the fetus cause it. And allthough not ideal if your vomiting a lot, fetuses are resilient if they have developed properly in the first place.

Yesterday I read about the placenta that's not fully formed until 18-20 weeks. Before that you're ovaries produce hormones that support the baby and give us first trimester symptoms. Then the placenta produces hormones for the baby. I guess it's a gradual swap over.

As for cravings, it's sugar, salt and processed food. A proper home cooked meal I have to really force down. Before I was pregnant I had recently moved to a high protein/high fat/ low carb breakfast. And it made me feel much better. But now when I try that I feel yuk, I'm hoping soon I can get back to it. As I really need to reduce my sugar. From the beggining I feel like this is a girl. When I was pregnant with my girl I had simular, with my boy I craved salmon and KFC. Allthough I did crave fried chicken this time a bit too. My salmon love is not back. I used to dislike it, currently it's a meh food.

NewAgeDawning · 15/05/2026 16:14

@Emilymombitesorry to hear the first trimester hasnt been kind to you. Thanks for sharing about b6. Ive heard how it can be helpful. I havent had many symptoms at all, my nausea is pretty tame. I did supplement with 50mg of b6 whilst ttc so wonder if thats why?

NewAgeDawning · 15/05/2026 16:15

@SunshineRose12i put on weight, about 1.5 kgs already

howluckyarewe · 15/05/2026 16:29

@mamatotwo98 what a shock! I was half conscious of the same thing happening to me; I always thought it I tried for a third I'd end up with twin boys, but only one over here. You've got this, your home is going to be so full of love. ❤️ If you've gone for a third you've figured out all other parenting challenges this far, twins will be easy to add to the mix.

@SunshineRose12 I'm scared to weigh myself but I can tell I've put on a few kg. Clothes are too tight and my face looks puffy from water retention. Salty carbs are the only things keeping me going right now. You definitely haven't hurt your baby though! You would have to be skin & bones before there was an impact on bump, they take all the vitality from us firstly.

Is anyone else a vegetarian craving meat? 😂 I’ve not eaten meat for 12 years but I keep getting a taste of beef and I don’t know what to do! I’m not sure I can stomach actually eat meat after all this time, I’m quite squeamish.. I’ve been craving ice too which I’ve heard can mean low iron so perhaps the meat craving is linked to that. My prenatal vitamins contain iron but tbh, my current diet won’t supply me much iron, I’m so nauseous I can’t manage anything not bland. Any ideas?

I was worried this would happen to me! Have you tried the beyond burgers? They taste pretty meaty so might satisfy the itch!

Ohh yess beyond burgers are amazing! This is a good shout. Will try this 😂

hollyhocks2 · 15/05/2026 16:55

That’s great to hear @pastaislife and @Desperatelyseekingme !
No meat cravings for this veggie, sorry no ideas food wise… Could you just add in an extra iron supplement on top of the prenatal?
@mamatotwo98 gosh that’s a shock to double your number of children. Take your time processing it, you’ve got ages after all. You’ll be ready when the time comes.

@SunshineRose12 I haven’t in this pg but I did with my DD, and I genuinely think I was burning a lot of calories even in early pregnancy. Must have been. I was eating very healthily at that point and had been losing weight deliberately before getting pregnant and it carried on for a few weeks even without trying anymore. I honestly wouldn’t worry, you’re not doing anything wrong. The baby will take what it needs and leave you with the scraps! As you’ve had nausea it makes sense. Plenty of time to put it back on too.

SunshineRose12 · 15/05/2026 18:21

Thanks everyone for the reassurance, it’s appreciated ❤️
Going to just stop looking at the scales, I think. Like many others on this thread, it took us a long time to conceive this baby, so just so afraid of doing anything that could result in me losing this baby.

OlivejuiceU2 · 15/05/2026 20:36

Hi @SunshineRose12 I lost 5kg in the first trimester of my first pregnancy. 60kg down to 55kg, baby was perfectly fine and healthy.

rach971 · 16/05/2026 10:43

Just had a text through to say I've got a hospital appointment two weeks on Tuesday. Doesn't say what for and the appointments line is closed at weekends. Nothing on my NHS app either. Can only think it must be the 12 week scan but I was told the appointment would be made at the booking appointment which is next week. Maybe they've realised I'm not far off 12 weeks anyway and they've just booked it in? I hate when things happen on weekends and the phone lines are all closed 😂

hollyhocks2 · 16/05/2026 13:15

I guess because you were supposed to have your booking appt before now, so in a way that’s the right order (had they turned up for your booking in!!). I guess that experience makes you question it all though - they’ve made one mistake already so I can understand wanting to double check things before you go along!

rach971 · 16/05/2026 13:29

@hollyhocks2 I know they do midwife appointments at the hospital as well as the children's centre so I think I'm just a bit nervous they've postponed me again 😂😂 Fingers crossed it is the scan, I'll phone the appointments line Monday morning

JH20000 · 16/05/2026 14:20

Just checking in.

does anyone else feel they have absolutely no energy? It’s really debilitating right now alongside nausea. I don’t even have the energy to shower right now it’s that bad. I’m just exhausted all the time.

NewAgeDawning · 16/05/2026 15:07

@rach971do you have the nhs app? Its really easy to set up. You'd be able to see the letter now if theyve issued you one which they should.

Yes @JH20000 you sound like me. I've got zero energy, completely zapped of all mojo. I can't remember it being this bad last time BUT I didn't have a busy toddler to look after last time so I probably was, I just lay down more.

rach971 · 16/05/2026 17:48

@NewAgeDawning Yeah nothing on there unfortunately :(
