kd73 sorry you've had a worrying scan. If it was me I'd definitely want bloods done before making a decision to do a CVS or amnio. Some of the NHS tests aren't very reliable, it depends where you are what markers they test for and at what stage.

The bloods I had done were at 10-12 weeks and it was the Primark test. The mw took the sample for me and I posted it to them so it may be possible for the same lab to do it for you regardless of where you are. The total cost for the scan + tests was around £180 but I think most of that was for the ultrasound, not sure how much the bloods on their own would be. I went for this as it's supposed to be the most accurate test (and with the lowest false positive rate) available.

Whatever you decide, I hope you manage to get some reassurance soon and that everything's OK

tryingnottoobsess · 12/06/2008 11:24

Thanks Kasha,

Yeah, they said that even with the tests, in 80% of cases they don't find a reason, so I guess that was the case with you. Even so it is good to know they're testing.

Mine is in in the 'women's & children's unit' (ie maternity) which bothers me a bit as I haven't been there yet - only to the EPU which is, thankfully, separate.

I'm hoping that they might be able to shed some light on them happening at different stages (2 pre-hb and 1 post-hb) which I vaguely remember might indicate different causes?

So much googling to do... but not yet.

hey jules, just who I was looking for..what's your msn name?

elibumbum · 12/06/2008 12:27

tnto I'm so sorry . I found the Lesley Regan book very helpful and positive. I hope you get some answers soon. In the meantime please take care of yourself and you know where we are if you need to vent.

kd sorry to hear you've had a worrying NT result. I've never had one but have researched having the test done privately (they don't offer it on the NHS in my area) that the Nuchal Scan and bloods at 12 weeks offer a 90% detection rate for downs. Blood test alone at 16 weeks is 65%.

Tryingnottoobsess. Bugger. I really dont know what else to say other than I am really sorry for both you and DH..
Make sure you look after yourself and take time to recover from the surgery.

cricri · 12/06/2008 16:41

Tryingnottoobsess So sorry to hear your news Hope you get some answers after the investigations.
I also found the Lesley Regan book very useful.
((Hugs)) to you and we're here if you need us.

Tryingnottoobsess So sorry to hear your news, lets hope that the tests prove to be helpful and life will be brighter in the future.

Kasha Thanks for the link, I am weighing up the options at the moment and spoke to the hospital this morning. They won't rescan me despite the sonographer having difficulties as baby in awkward position (had to scan me on my side in the end). I can have the bloods done but not supported via the NHS which is v. annoying.

Ta guys. Jules that msn earlier was so helpful - thanks.

Good luck kd - agonising decisions.

lackaDAISYcal · 12/06/2008 20:30

trying....I'm so so sorry . big hugs from me to you and I hope you get some answers from the tests. Having had 2 mc/s for me it was the not knowing why that has been the worst bit.

Take care of yourself xx

positive, I remember you from last year...and yes I'm back again after having DD last June . Congratulations on the birth of your little boy

kd...no experience, but wanting to send you lots of positive vibes. I also know of a couple of people who had low results, had invasive testing done and everything turned out OK. My SIL's result was 1 in 43 so she had amnio and all was well. It must be a hard decision to make though.

TNTO I'm so so sorry to hear that. I'm gutted for you as it all seemed ok last wk. I'm glad you are being referred for tests sooner rather than later. Take care of yourself and DH.

KD I know 2 people who had high risk, didn't have further tests and their babies were born with no problems at all.
I haven't even had the blood test to test for downs as mine & dh's opinion was would we terminate? After discussion with the MW we decided we wouldn't terminate so for us there was no point in tests, what will be will be. Of course this is our personal preference but would further tests "help" you?

rainrain · 12/06/2008 20:47

Hi everyone, been ages have been on - too much to catch up on, hope you are all well. Just wanted to send love to you Trying, so sorry you are going through this again. I know that I am not at a safe end by any means, but have got to 25 weeks after 3 consecutive losses, and after a load of tests which showed up nothing of significance. I did take baby asprin for the first 3 months (on consultants rather vague recommendation, but not on clinical trial), and have made a lifestyle change since last pg which i think has greatly reduced stress levels. Guess I will never know if that made any difference, but just wanted to shine a dim light at the end of the tunnel for you....

Kd whatever you decide hope it all works out.

Everyone else hope you doing well.

barbareebaa · 12/06/2008 22:20

So sorry tryingnotto

supersteph · 13/06/2008 13:28

Hi all, I had my 6 week scan yesterday and I can confirm all is well. I saw the heart beating and my little pea was where he/she should be. I have a scan booked in 2 weeks time as of my mmc last year when the baby stopped growing at 8 weeks. I have been feeling sick all day for 3 days now. Last night I was very sick. sorry if tmi. Am glad to have my symptoms finaly. xx

cece · 13/06/2008 13:42

kd73 just seen your message about your NT results. What was the measurement? I had a 1:50 result with my last pg and I had an apointment within the week to speak with the consultant at the hospital. Could you ask for that - have you been given that option> In the end we decided not to have any further testing done, mainly because I felt the risk of miscaariage was too high for me to accept.

There is a charity called ARC that advises on antenatal testing. A very helpful helpline if you want to speak to someone.

perkypopsy · 13/06/2008 13:45

Hi supersteph - I remember being at your stage - sounds really good - am crossing everything for you. Is amazing how much that first bit drags as every minute you worry about the baby and how it is going - the best bit is getting to the moving around point when you get daily reassurance that everything okay (or at least as okay as any ultrasound scan would be able to tell you)

TTNO so so sorry you are going through this again - thank god for MN eh? I only went through it once and my whole life was turned upside down so I can hardly imagine what you are going through now - you sound like a really brave strong woman from your posts!!

Mapleleaf134 · 13/06/2008 14:13

Hi all,

Thought I'd join this thread, too. The title made me smile. Very apt.

First time round, I started bleeding at 8 wks, went for a scan on a Monday, when they saw the heartbeat (but dated me at 6 wks, which I knew was wrong), went back on the Friday after bleeding continued, and heartbeat was gone. Mc over by 9 wks (in Jan 08). Such a shock - never occurred to me it would happen.

I'm now 5+0 and am feeling nothing - no emotions, no symptoms. Really just waiting for the worst again. This will be my first if it hangs on. Fingers crossed!

supersteph · 13/06/2008 14:45

I know exacly how you feel Mapleleaf. i dont think You can never injoy a pregnancy untill past the 12week mark if you have suffered a loss. To reasure you I am 6+1 today and I have only in the past 3 days had any symptoms that are sore bb and sickness. Even the 8 positive tests was not enoth for me. I was so relived to have the scan yesterday. Why dont you ask your gp if you can have a early scan as of your last loss. (smile) I'm sure all will be fine, we must keep possitive. xx

Mapleleaf134 · 13/06/2008 14:57

Thanks, supersteph. I will ask the gp. I had no symptoms last time, either, other than tiredness, which I don't even have now, but maybe it's a bit early.

DH is the most positive person in the world, but was afraid to upset me by suggesting a celebration when we found out about this BFP. I told him that we should def celebrate as it was a wonderful thing, regardless of the outcome. I should perhaps remember my own advice!
