Confusing Potty Shot

Hi all. I’m currently 18+5 and had a gender scan at exactly 15 weeks. I was told that the baby is a girl, and without second thought spent a fortune preparing for a girl.

I’m now so worried that it’s actually a boy? Can someone please bring me back to reality. I suffer with ridiculous anxiety and have spent the last 3 hours staring at this potty shot.

I have my 20 week scan on Monday, but I just need some reassurance or opinions for now!

To be fair I'm with to ... I can't make out what makes it a girl either and I've had one of each

Kriszoee · 12/03/2025 12:09

@ohpoowhatnow me either. This is where I’m so lost, because it doesn’t look like a boy either.

really don’t know what to think. this is the only other image that I have, and obviously looks like a girl but in my opinion is focusing more on the bum that in between the legs and looks like the baby is “ sitting “..

"Potty shot"? Bleeeeugh. And it's sex not gender.

Bear in mind that NO scan is 100% accurate. You surely signed something to confirm you understand that?

Kriszoee · 12/03/2025 12:21

@TallulahBetty not sure what the attitude is all about? These are commonly known as “ Potty Shots “.

its not a “ sex scan “ or a “ sex reveal “.
It’s a “ gender scan “ and “ gender reveal “ - therefore I will continue to call it GENDER.

Clearly 95% accuracy isn't the same as 100%, does that mean I’m not allowed to post to a public forum ( the same as hundreds of others do ), to ask for a second opinion because “ no scan is 100% “?

Sorry that you’ve woken up on the wrong side of the bed today.

Looks to be a girl to me only because of the lack of boy parts. With boys you can 100% tell as you can see a Penis and balls.

Kriszoee · 12/03/2025 12:29

@Dairymilkisminging thank you for your input, makes me feel a bit better as those would’ve fully been visible at 15 weeks.

I think the only thing throwing me off is the fact that it looks “ long “ and “ detached “. Just doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen before!😂

Nope, this is sex not gender. They are called 'gender scans' in error. 10000% sex. I can only assume that 'potty shot' is another hideous Americanism.

Kriszoee · 12/03/2025 12:33

@TallulahBetty why on earth has this bothered you so much? You’re on Netmums, terminology is not important. Both of those terms quite literally, mean the exact same thing.

if you take yourself through the multitude of posts, you’ll see they are ALL titled “ Potty Shot “.

OP posts:
nonmerci99 · 12/03/2025 12:33

I’ve never heard the term “potty shot” — not sure they’re as common as you think, OP.

Looks like the sex is female to me.

It should be though.

Gender apparently doesn't coexist with what genitals people have anymore. Its a social construction and nothing to do with biology

So i absolutly would tell people the SEX of my baby and say I was going to a scan to find out the sex of my baby.

Gender took over, as a descriptor, in popularity years before the trans movement as people found it more comfortable to say gender instead of sex. Back then people conflated the 2 as one but now activists have made a clear separation and it's important to distinguish.

I dont believe in gender but apparently theres over a hundred of them so if you want to know your baby's gender then you might want to wait until its old enough to tell you and use gender neutral pronouns until then.

Or you could ask about its sex.

Also 'potty shot' is gross.

MinistryofThyme · 12/03/2025 12:35

It’s a girl, I’d say.

It is also absolutely sex not gender.

Kriszoee · 12/03/2025 12:36

They are - but not that it matters anyway.

Not sure why I’ve been personally attacked on this thread, despite there being a multitude of posts with the same wording.

Thanks.

I'd try not to worry. They won't have based it on this picture but a real-time moving image of the baby which I'm sure was much clearer.

At least you should have it confirmed on Monday, let us know how you get on.

Sorry, this is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous.

It’s basic science tbh

remaininghopeful23 · 12/03/2025 12:39

Sorry OP I don't know the answer. However I can say that from working in maternity care most hospital sonographers wouldn't dream of determining the sex so early. The anatomy scan is much more definitive, but even then can be difficult. Was it a private gender scan? I feel they are really after your money and IME a lot get it wrong. Hope your anatomy scan goes well! And hopefully they'll be able to tell you with some level of certainty then. Congratulations 😊

Do you really think I woke up this morning and decided to post on Netmums to get a mouthful of abuse from several people telling me I’m wrong because theres “ hundreds of genders “.

We’re talking about a BABY, whom is either going to be male or female.

OP posts:
JuneySunshine · 12/03/2025 12:40

Calm down people.

Fine it's sex, but people don't seem to like saying 'sex' and 'baby' in the same sentence so they sell them as 'gender scans'.
It's pretty off topic.

This. I hope you get the answer you want at the 20 week scan, OP, but of course there's a risk that it was wrong. Especially as early as 15 weeks.

And before you get jumped on for this, this is Mumsnet not Netmums. Two quite different forums despite the fact they are both for parents!

Sounds like someone pissing into a toilet and whether their aim is good or they are weeing on the floor. Just yuck. I’ve had 3 pregnancies and haven’t heard this among any mums in the uk before

just because Americans say something doesn’t mean we have to copy.
You could find a much nicer way of talking about this issue
