Those of you who have had 12 week scans, can I ask what else they do / check other than the combined screening?

Ive heard of the blood tests they do at this stage flagging low pap a and proteins and things but I really don’t know much about this and how serious it is.

Basically I’m still fighting to get a 12 week scan date.. currently a few days off 12 weeks. I’ve been told it will be more like 4 months when I can have the scan so no combined screening, but I have paid for the NIPT privately. I’m just wondering if there’s anything else I’m delaying / missing out on. Considering complaining to PALS.

Can't believe you've not been given a dating scan yet! What area of the uk are you?

This really doesn't sound right. Do you mind me asking which area of Newc you're in or where your midwife booking appointment was? The combined screening is only relevant for a short window of time - I'm pretty sure between 12-14 weeks, so if they leave it longer than this they can't give an accurate screening. I would be asking for confirmation that they will fund NIPT if they can't do the combined screening within the appropriate timeframe.

I'm also just really shocked though and think the issue must be with the MW as the RVI is pretty on it with the scan appoint a in my experience in both pregnancies

I’m with the Walker midwives. Experience hasn’t been great tbh… they tried to refused to accept me as a patient for a while so I had to beg and plead with them (my GP practice is connected to Walker midwives, my home address is in the kenton midwives catchment area so it became this nhs administrative stalemate!). My midwife at the booking appointment was nice though, apparently she’s usually with the kenton midwives and covering for someone in the Walker team. Who are you with??

I ended up paying for the NIPT privately myself already. I just wasn’t getting anywhere with the midwives / hospital with the 12 week scan and there was absolutely no understanding or reassurance. Tbh the RVI said they wouldn’t even discuss it until I was more than 12 weeks. They just said they have no appointments, nothing that can be done. They’d do the quad testing for downs and check for edwards and patau at 20 weeks if the scan is after 14 weeks which is the expectation atm. I didn’t want this dragging on until I was 6 months gone so decided to just find the money for NIPT and get it out of the way.

I will complain to PALS because I don’t think it’s right and it wasn’t a small amount of money to me to come up with. It was almost the equivalent of my monthly mortgage payment. 😔

Fluffydino21 · 02/03/2025 19:41

@chicke09 this is in newcastle.

@Mol1820 I thought there was more of a commitment from the nhs to get you the combined screening than there is… The wording on all the nhs websites I’ve seen and from the midwife has been more they’ll do the combined screening ‘if possible’. It’s not guaranteed. And all they’ll do instead is the quad screening and checks at 20 weeks, no mention of paying for NIPT.

I'm glad she took it well. Ours hasn't. Being 18 with a baby sibling isn't cool apparently and people might think the baby is hers

It’s a shock to the system isn’t it?
She reacted worse to me getting married tbh, but I think her being at uni, she’s got her own life somewhat so she’s less bothered about mine 😂

ellabellaaaa · 02/03/2025 20:58

Hello everyone! I've been following along with all your posts but wasn't sure until today whether I'd be due in late September or early October. I had a scan earlier this afternoon showing that I'm currently 10+3 with a EDD of 24th Sept 😊

Would it be OK if I joined the Whatsapp group?

thatmistylight · 02/03/2025 21:23

Thank you for welcome me ☺️. My 12 week scan is tomorrow, it will be the first time seeing baby and I can’t sleep I’m so nervous. I have no reason to believe it will be anything other than positive, I’ve had really strong symptoms and keep getting lots of positive pregnancy tests, but it’s still so scary. I don’t think I will be sleeping much tonight!.

@Mol1820 I will probably just keep to posting on here, I’m rubbish at keeping up with group chats. Thank you so much though! X

MyGardenDaisies · 03/03/2025 07:20

Morning!
12+3, it’s scan week! So excited! It will be 3rd time seeing baby.

Very happy to be in 2nd trimester in a few days too, as it feels like a fresh page

thismotherhoodthing · 03/03/2025 10:10

@Fluffydino21 tbh that is pretty bad I think so you're right to go to PALS. Is it your first pregnancy as well? Sorry have lost track of everyone on here.

I'm with the Kenton midwives and I was from halfway through my last pregnancy
too. I actually have the same community MW as last time. I don't find the support element that great at all but I was straight in for my booking appointment and scan so can't complain. I know more this time about what to expect so have lower expectations 🤣 sad but true

At the very least they should be getting you to your appointments and scans so they can check all is well and what level of monitoring you need.

Melusina123 · 03/03/2025 10:17

I am also a bit gobsmacked by this @Fluffydino21 ! Good that you got the NIPT so as to have a reasonable answer in a reasonable timeframe (also the quadruple test isn’t as good as the combined test!), but you shouldn’t have had to be out of pocket because the midwives don’t seem to feel like getting you a scan in a reasonable timeframe with reasonable notice is something that matters. Definitely one for PALS!

thismotherhoodthing · 03/03/2025 15:32

@Fluffydino21 I have just got my date through for my 20 week scan...
Definitely an issue with your midwives as the RVI seem very organised with the appointments. I feel for you it sounds like the sure not doing their jobs properly

Melusina123 · 03/03/2025 15:54

@thatmistylight hope your scan went well today!

@ellabellaaaa of course, all welcome! The link is upthread somewhere if you haven’t found it.

Fluffydino21 · 03/03/2025 20:17

@thismotherhoodthing it is my first, yes. There’s nothing so far to indicate I’m high risk but I just want the absolute basics E.g. combined screening.

Hopefully it’ll become clear in the next few days if it’s an issue with the midwives or the hospital. In fairness the RVI has said they won’t discuss appointments until I hit 12 weeks so I assumed that meant they were really busy atm.

I really hope it’s not the same with the 20 week scan! 😩

Ncl31 · 04/03/2025 06:30

Sorry ladies I’ve been off here for a little while due to anxiety etc… unfortunately my pregnancy has come to an end at 11 weeks. Need to go in for surgery tomorrow :(

DJE24 · 04/03/2025 06:36

Been quiet here, but it’s finally scan day today! I’m 13+5!!

We had an early private scan at 7 weeks and all was ok but after my symptoms dropped away at 10 weeks, I’ve been anxious! I do have a little bump now though so fingers crossed all is ok today, slept like shit last night ha!

That is so heartbreaking and unfair, I am sorry for your loss.
Maybe if they carry out tests at the hospital you will get some answers

Melusina123 · 04/03/2025 08:52

Oh no @Ncl31 💔i’m so sorry to hear it. Sending so much love to you and family. Life really is so unfair sometimes.

I have regenerated a new link for the Facebook group since the old one has expired x

https://fb.me/g/2YZ9ha7On/zo89LZUp

@TTCJJB mentioned above it works better if copied and pasted into the navigation bar rather than just clicking.

Would it be possible for an updated Facebook link please?
