Hi ladies! I've just joined this group.. hope everybody is well!
I'm currently 14+3 and this is my 4th bubba who is due on 2nd September.
I received a phone call from the midwife yesterday to tell me that my results from my bloods have come back as high risk for Down's Syndrome (1 in 56). Went in today for a NIPT test and she said results can take up to 10 working days! Don't know how I'm going to get through these next 2 weeks, my anxiety has peaked out of the roof and I can't stop overthinking and crying!

I'm so sorry that you're facing this stress and that it might be so long until you get an answer. I really hope 10 working days is just the absolute max it could take and in reality it will be much much quicker.

I don't know if it's any comfort but I think the combined test really isn't that accurate and wrongly gives high results in a lot of cases. I'm sure I read about 1 in 20 people have high risk results and need to get the NIPT, and of those more than 19 out of the 20 turn out to be low risk. I really think the combined testing causes an unnecessary amount of stress for so many people.

I know its easy for me to say but I'm sure it's still more likely to be turn out to be ok.

@Cherry1703 sending you love and strength at this uncertain time.
I hope you’re not waiting as long as you’re expecting, looking at it differently though, 55 people in the same situation as you will have an outcome that doesn’t involve DS.

gentle hugs to you

Melusina123 · 07/03/2025 15:49

@Cherry1703 welcome and i’m sorry to hear about the scary screening result, fx it all turns out fine. Just remember 1 in 56 means that in a room of 1000 people with that risk level, only 18 would get a positive! The odds are very much in your favour, even with this ‘higher risk’ result.

MyGardenDaisies · 07/03/2025 19:32

@Cherry1703 sorry to hear that. Did your baby have a higher than normal NT measurement at the scan?

I am currently 13w and waiting for my results letter. The measurement was within the normal range.

MyGardenDaisies · 07/03/2025 19:34

How is everyone else doing? I feel like it’s been quite quiet here since everyone is pretty much now moved or moving into 2nd trimester.

I have been quite anxious, as my haematoma is still there and actually longer now than 2w ago, and I didn’t get my questions answered at the hospital and my midwife has been MIA, so just crossing fingers that it will soon get absorbed by my body.

Cherry1703 · 07/03/2025 22:34

Thank you so much for the reassurance, ladies! It means a lot.
My NT measurement was fine, it's 1.5. It was my hCGb which was raised at 3.21 and PAPP-A was 0.6 (which is within normal range but on the lower end - the midwife said).. I think my age might be another factor too (36) xx

Melusina123 · 08/03/2025 07:04

@Cherry1703 I've seen a lot of threads on combined test risks and the fact that nuchal translucency is normal is a good sign. I feel optimistic for you that it will all be ok. :) of course you can never be sure, but the odds are still in your favour!

Does anyone else feel like they're starting to show a bit? I can still definitely hide it but on a tight dress now I think people might start to guess...

MrsH26 · 08/03/2025 08:22

@Melusina123 Absolutely! I’m a curvy girl anyway, but in my swimming costume at centre parks this week. There’s deffo a wee but of something extra that’s making it hard to hide! Lol

This is my second pregnancy and I definitely feel like I'm showing now. Having to hide in baggy cardigans and jumpers until my scan!

Hi everyone, my scan went well on Monday. I’m due a bit earlier than I thought and we also found out that we are expecting twins!. I’ve moved over to the August due date group as that’s when they should be born. Good luck with your pregnancies everyone!.

Fashionlover123 · 08/03/2025 09:38

Hi all! 13+5 now, 12 week scan was all good!
still feeling sick, taking xonvea which is helping but hasn’t got rid of it 100%. Praying in the next couple of weeks I get my energy back, went to bed at 7:30 last night and slept through!!!!

Aww thank you for your positive message, trying to stay optimistic for now!
When is your scan? Hope all goes well for you!
I'm 14+4 weeks but still feel like i'm more bloat than bump yet xx

Hadenough1234567 · 08/03/2025 12:52

Are you guys getting NIPT on NHS automatically at sane time as 12 week scsn?

I thought it was a more basic blood test (which along with the scan is the combined test) with NIPT only being offered (which is where they map the DNA and is more accurate) if the results show high risk?

Melusina123 · 08/03/2025 13:09

@Hadenough1234567 you are correct - afaik no NHS trusts offer the NIPT as first line screening. They do the combined test, which looks at papp-a, free beta HCG, nuchal translucency and maternal age. Some trusts offer NIPT as second line screening if the combined test returns a higher chance result and some go straight to a diagnostic test (CVS or amniocentesis).

People on this thread who've had the NIPT prior to the 12wk scan result have all, I believe, paid for it privately.

sunshineandrain82 · 08/03/2025 13:13

Think it also depends on the trust and "family history". I got offered NIPT because I already have a child with Down syndrome.

To be exact I have 2 children with autism one of which has global development delay. 1 child with Down syndrome. I've been offered a lot of different genetic screenings because of the family history

Hadenough1234567 · 08/03/2025 13:17

Thanks @sunshineandrain82 im in Scotland so wondered if it’s different in England.

Fluffydino21 · 08/03/2025 20:08

I paid for the NIPT privately.

Those of you who also got NIPT did you still get your combined screening with the nhs?

I got NIPT because the NHS indicated my 12 week scan would be too late for the combined screening but now it looks like I might just be before the 14 week cut off. Just not sure if it confuses things getting a less accurate test after low risk NIPT…

Melusina123 · 08/03/2025 20:37

@Fluffydino21 I declined the combined test for exactly the reason you say. I figured the two scenarios were either it was low risk so same info, or higher risk in which case they'd say "oh but you've had the NIPT, that's what we'd offer you next anyway so you're fine." 🤷‍♀️

MyGardenDaisies · 12/03/2025 07:33

Morning!

how’s everyone doing?

I got my screening results back as low 1:5000 and happy about that.

also popped on a scale and have gained nothing so far, which I am very happy about, as I gained ridiculous amount in 1st pregnancy and it took such effort to lose.

Might be a sensitive topic, but how is everyone else doing with weight management, especially fellow higher BMI ladies? X

Cherry1703 · 12/03/2025 10:33

Hi ladies! Hope everyone is doing well.. just a little update on my NIPT results.. midwife called this morning to give me the news of being lower chance and to put it all behind me, not to worry and to enjoy the rest of my pregnancy.
The wait was awful, however, the results came back in less than a week! ❤️ xx

MyGardenDaisies · 12/03/2025 10:49

@Cherry1703 thats great news! Out of curiosity, what result did the NIPT show? Was it vastly different from the NHS one?

I find the way results are classified is crazy, like 1:150 is high risk but 1:151 low risk. That’s literally such a small difference

So glad to hear this! And also relieved they didn't make you wait 10 working days!

Thank you ❤️
She said that there were no figures stated on this one as they don't provide an in depth blood anaylsis on the NIPT (I'm assuming this is because it's on the NHS but if you go privately, they give you all the chance rates, probabilities etc.)
She sent me the report via the app we use (MyMFT) and it had my details on it along with 'lower chance for Down's Syndrome, Edwards' Syndrome and Patau's Syndrome' xx
