MrsH26 · 09/09/2025 10:09

We finally got to bring our little lady home from NICU on Sunday.
8wks and 2 days old, 37+1 corrected, exclusively BF, no tubes/NGs
Still very petite at 4lb 2oz, but she finally feels like our baby!

Great news @MrsH26 Hope ye are settling in well at home

Superscientist · 11/09/2025 11:10

That's great @MrsH26 I hope you are settling in well at home and adjusting to life outside of the hospital

We made it home yesterday too after his blood sugars stabilised and we had a day of breastfeeding without needing formula top ups.

MyGardenDaisies · 13/09/2025 14:09

My baby was 10.5lbs born at 39+3!

Superscientist · 13/09/2025 14:36

How's everyone doing?
I'm trying to not get myself anxious.

I think his birth weight was measured incorrectly. We have a photo of him on the scales so we know the number recorded was right but maybe it wasn't zeroed properly? He's on a towel and wearing a hat so maybe it was zeroed before they were added.
It's meant to be essentially the same weight as my daughter was but when you compare him and her in photos wearing the same clothes he's clearly a lot smaller. We have also just had to go out and buy size 0 nappies (2-5lb) as we were getting leaks and struggling to get the size 1s to fit (4+lb). His birth weight was apparently 6lb12 so he's possibly quite a bit lower than that. He's 5 days today but our 5 day appointment has been postponed until tomorrow as I had a hospital appointment. I'm nervous that when they weigh him there will be a huge loss and panic.

He's also really really sleepy. I'm not sure when he's meant to start waking more. He only wakes for a minute at a time a couple of times a day. He's a sleep probably 23h a day.

MyGardenDaisies · 13/09/2025 14:44

@SuperscientistIs he feeding ok? Feeding counts as “wake” time too.

Not sure on the feeding to be honest better than he was but not sure if ok. He's now waking for feeds, but can only latch in one position and it's not always very deep. Feeds at 4-8 minutes at time 1.5-2h a day and it's usually the only time he's awake but quickly goes back to sleep. The only other time he wakes is if his nappy needs changing and not always. He quite often sleeps through the nappy change.
He's had a referral for tongue tie but the earliest that will be picked up is Monday as they only look at referrals once a week. The infant feeding lady is calling on Monday and coming out on Tuesday if we haven't been picked up by the tongue tie clinic on Tuesday

Hay we are currently going through something similar.
we had a loss on day 5
loss day 10
static day 12
introduced top ups with expressed milk and had a gain day 14.

we are tongue tied. Because of the weight issue we was able to get an emergency appointment. Revision is 3 week wait here but it is being treated as an emergency and being done this week. Only 4 days after referral.

we also have a difference in weight. our photo of scales puts a higher weight then what they recorded.

is he jaundice? That makes them super sleepy. We have the added issue of morphine during my section then my pain relief was codine. Which also makes baby sleepy. Now we are awake a lot more. But still can be super sleepy.

one of the things I’ve been doing is feeding then changing. It wakes him enough to feed again. If he’s super sleepy and goes to long between feeds I strip him down to his happy and use a blanket over us. That helps to wake him up as well.

Thanks, midwife has been. Turns out he's just super scrawny! 6lb5oz with 6.5% weight loss at day 6 pretty good going considering initial feeding issues and tongue tie. So it Iooks like birth weight is right and daughter was chunky and him scrawny. There's also no sign of jaundice although is still quite bruised from delivery so could be disguising it

I've been told to call the infant feeding if I haven't heard about the tongue tie assessment by tomorrow afternoon to call the infant feeding team. They should do the assessment the next day.
Sleepiness is probably the tongue tie but he does appear to be getting enough milk at the moment but to call triage if I'm worried. We only had gas and air in labour although I'm on medication that's sedating so hopefully that's not making him sleepy.

He's waking to feed usually every 1.5-2 h occasionally I have to wake him at 3h but that's really the only time he's awake. It's probably the tongue tie that's contributing to his sleepiness. We had to do the stripping down with my daughter every 3h for a few weeks as she wouldn't wake either. I think he's already doing better than that. He doesn't always wake when he has his nappy changed and when he does he goes back to sleep once he's back in a clean nappy

LookingAtMyBhunas · 14/09/2025 21:40

Has everyone given birth already??

I'm due Thursday but think I've been in latent labour for at least a week.
I was 1cms last week, she's engaged, had a bloody show, lost mucus plug today, Contractions on and off. Then just when I think it's happening... Nothing 😣

Feeling pretty fed up as almost wish I had nothing going on instead of this stop/start all the time.

ThatSnugSwan · 15/09/2025 17:01

Finally my turn tomorrow 🙌 Booked in for 7:30am, nervous and excited for my 3rd section

Nipple stimulation is meant to help bring on labour.
Be as active as you can and try to get some good meals in you too for energy through labour when you might not have much of an appetite.

I hope it kicks in a some point. The on and off is frustrating. I had contractions on and off for a month before I was induced (irritable uterus) and that was frustrating when it went between regular and occasional contractions not that I wanted baby go arrive at 33 weeks I just wanted to know where I stood rather than some half way house

When did you have your appointment with the consultant? I’ve got mine next week at 37weeks… I’m due October but follow both threads.

I hope I get a date shortly after my appointment as I’m so anxious about him arriving before!

I'd give your midwife a call, then the consultant and then maternity triage a call to chase down that date.

I called maternity triage today.

They said my c-section would only be in week 39 or 40 anyway.

They said if I haven't heard by the end of this week to give them a call back next week.

Hopefully I won't go into labour before then as then I would need an emergency section:(

I think terms of recovery and risk profiles when you have a planned c section that turns into an emergency only because you go into labour before your section date are similar to planned c sections.

I think the harder recovery from emergency C-section is mostly from going through a prolonged labour and then surgery.

I'd have quite a low bar of reaching out if you think you are in labour and they can get you added to that days surgery list and hopefully it will be as close to as calm as your planned c section would be.

How are you getting on?

Our tongue tie referral was picked up yesterday and we had our assessment today. I was expecting a battle as they gave a spiel on the phone about not all babies needing them separated and they will assess a feed before deciding if it needs division.
They took one feel of his tongue and divided it there and then. They graded as between type 1 and 2. They then observed a feed after it had been snipped and gave some tips for improving latch. As with my daughter I've got a very good supply so that will have been helping him get plenty of milk despite the feeding issues.

Hello
yes they always give that. I luckily don’t get it as all our referrals said “experienced breast feeding mum” feeding each child for 2 years seems to have benefited me.

well he’s feeding so much better. We just need to work on his shallow latch now.

currently battling engorgement though. Figured out this morning I must of sized up nursing bras over the weekend. They are so tight it’s giving me back pain and making me engorged. But it’s not an easy fix as I have no local shops sell nursing wear.

paid for next day delivery. But that’s still tomorrow and I’m so sore 😐

Oh we had an emergency appointment and it was done on Monday. They gave us a nicu slot so I’m very grateful for that

between Friday and Monday he had gained 95g. Being weighed again today so hopefully we are near to birth weight. He’s 105g of on Monday

Superscientist · 17/09/2025 11:09

@sunshineandrain82 I'm glad they managed to find a way to see you quicker than originally thought. Good weight gain, I hope it continues and you get back to birth weight soon

When I said I had breastfed my daughter I got a patronising "well you might be comparing feeding an older baby with a newborn and not remembering how a newborn feeds"

We had a lot of feeding issues with my daughter which the infant feeding team put solely down to latch but it was reflux and allergy causing the bad latch as feeding caused her pain so she didn't want to feed but also really wanted a feed as she was hungry.

The HV has been out today and he's put on 50g in 3 days. We are having moments of him being awake outside of feeds and nappy changes now too
