@Meeting yes, we'll have a 21month age gap and I'm so much more scared for that than I was the first time round... please tell me it's going to be ok!?

JB2021 · 12/01/2025 07:32

@Meeting 2 years 4.5 months when LO is born

Anyone else finding it hard to sleep. Usually I'm a back sleeper so trying to avoid that. Finally get comfy on one side then either my hip or shoulder aches so switch to the other side and repeat!

Meeting · 12/01/2025 07:36

Ah, glad I'm not the only one! I'll have 18m between my two and I'm excited but nervous about going through the newborn stage with a toddler too!

@JB2021 I had that in my first pregnancy and it was misery, as far as I'm aware you don't need to be side sleeping until about 20 weeks but a pillow between my legs helped a lot.

JB2021 · 12/01/2025 07:37

@meeting I've got the huge maternity pillow! I don't remember it being this bad so early last time!

Huge congratulations to all of the new mamas to be who have recently joined. We seem to have lots of you who have conceived through IVF so can I take advantage of asking those of you who had fertility treatment some advice? One of my best friends has been going through the IVF process for several years now and has sadly had 2 unsuccessful rounds (both ending in a chemical). I’ve read it might be a good idea to message her separately to give her a heads up about my pregnancy before announcing it so she can process it privately but I’m struggling with how to word a message like this sensitively. I know she will be happy for me but it will understandably be really hard for her so want to be as sensitive as possible. Do any of you have experience of receiving a message like this from friends while you were going through treatment and any advice on what to say / not say?

Wow @strawberrylaces12 it sounds like you have been through a lot - the total fertilisation failure must have been heartbreaking and so worrying. It really does a number on you doesn't it? Huge congrats on your pregnancy 💛

We've had a lot of hurdles too and it's been a really long time for us - I remember when we first found out we needed intervention (early 2020), my husband was worried about how long it would all take, how stressful it would be etc - I was so sure I'd be pregnant in a year, it wasn't a big deal, and told him not not to worry - but it took us 5! (And a huge amount of emotional turmoil to boot).

The midwife appointment was great - she was so friendly and warm - it was a huge amount of info though! She did everything expected really - medical history, blood test, blood pressure, BMI etc. It is an exciting step! Have you had yours yet/ do you have it coming up soon?

Yeah from it I just assumed I was completely infertile to be honest and thought that was it. It explained why the IUIs may not have worked if potentially my eggs just hadn't activated properly. It really affected me. But we found the strength (and more money!) and thought right let's give it one more go just in case and then ended up with 7 blastocysts on round 2, a very different outcome. The fresh didn't take but the frozen did!

Gosh it sounds like you've really been through a lot. Was that a lot of fertility treatment then? Or was it lots of gaps in between especially with things like covid?

Aww that sounds so positive thank you for sharing! Will you find out your scan date soon? My booking appointment isn't until the 31st of January, when I'll already nearly be 12 weeks. But to be fair I didn't contact them until after my 7 week scan because for some reason I had it in my head that the clinic referred us on. I didn't realise I could have self referred as soon as I tested positive. So obviously it's all pushed it back a bit and my scan may be more like 13 or 14 weeks. But I'm glad I've booked a private scan for around 10 weeks now 😊

Whilst going through treatment my boss very kindly said to me that there is likely to be an upcoming pregnancy announcement at work and she just wanted to let me know beforehand. It really helped to give me a bit of time to prepare and when the inevitable announcement happened in a meeting I didn't feel like my face looked all sour and jealous 😂 I can't remember exactly how she worded it but to be honest just a sensitive heads up made all of the difference. We also got prewarned before an extended family member announced her pregnancy on social media which helped.

I know it's not the same situation. But if a friend of mine had been pregnant during the treatment any sort of kind heads up would have been hugely appreciated, it doesn't need to be a hugely long message really just let her know you are here for her. You sound like a good friend 😊

100% a heads up message will be appreciated and as long as it is a text and not face to face. My best friend told me face to face because she thought it would be better... it wasn't. I've felt a bit traumatised by it since... but I also feel sad because it didn't give me time to process my own emotions and give her the reaction/response she deserves... because obviously I am still really pleased for her.

Also understand that you might not hear back from them immediately, and it doesn't mean they won't be happy for you, they just need time to process - infertility sucks all the joy away, even from being able to celebrate your friends good news.

Thank you so much, this is really helpful. Yeah I would definitely message her so she has time to process before seeing her face to face. I just want to approach the situation as sensitively as possible so thank you for your advice and wishing you lots of luck with your pregnancy 🙂

Magix86 · 12/01/2025 09:50

@PregnantAtLast thank you 😊 congratulations to you too! They just said that's their general advice. It seemed a bit mixed really as the doctor unfortunately didn't write how many weeks on my notes so it was just the nurses making the decision. She said they either do 8 or 12 weeks, and then made some kind of comment about being NHS funded o shouldn't have any more, which really threw me off as that shouldn't be any reason not to have medication if it's helpful! She then tried to reassure me saying that some clinics stop it after a successful scan. I'm going to take it twice daily until 10 weeks then the rest I'll start reducing to one a day and then every other day, just to keep it going a tiny bit longer

Magix86 · 12/01/2025 09:54

@strawberrylaces12 I'm sorry to hear what you've been through. We also used donor sperm due to severe MFI. Do you mind me asking if they felt a change of donor was the reason you had better success? We've only had the one round but I was disappointed in our drop off. We had 11 fertilised out of 13 mature eggs. All 11 looked either top or good quality on day 2 and then by day 5 we only had a 4AA and a 3AB. I asked but they said they couldn't be sure if it was egg quality or sperm. I just keep thinking about if we try again in future whether a different donor might be better.

Magix86 · 12/01/2025 09:56

@MrsB902 I haven't had experience of close friends telling me they were pregnant but saw a lot of announcements on social media and also at work. It does hurt when you're going through IVF and can't have it as easily as it comes for others. I echo what the others have said, you sound like a lovely friend so a message saying you're there for her and you understand if she needs a bit of time sounds good x

That must have been tricky to navigate? With my wife and I being a same sex couple we always knew we'd need a donor.

I think the use of artificial oocyte activation (calcium ionophore) to support activation and fertilisation is probably what made the difference but we'll never know for certain, even the clinic don't really know! Maybe I was a better match with the second donor. Both donors have 'proven fertility' so 🤷‍♀️

CakePigeon30 · 12/01/2025 11:21

Hiya, I am due 27th August and recognise some of you off the ivf threads. I have my second scan a week tomorrow and should be 8w4d. I'm loaded with cold at the minute to the point where coughing makes me vomit (don't think I can count this as morning sickness) I have been getting nausea though.

Magix86 · 12/01/2025 11:52

Thanks for sharing @strawberrylaces12 that's really helpful. It's not been the easiest for us but have accepted this is just how our story goes. Our donor also had proven fertility so I guess that helps with reassurance. They all fertilised so well it's just a shame they didn't develop to day 5.
Hi @CakePigeon30 my due date should also be 27th August but at my 7 week scan they said I measured 2 days ahead. Have nothing until our 12 week scan now as the clinic have discharged us! It's great you get to have a second scan with them. I'm also feeling pretty sick a lot of the time with regularly having to lay down. No actual sickness tho. I had some non alcoholic ginger beer that seemed to help?!

Autumn245 · 12/01/2025 13:00

I'm also an ivf pregnancy so would love to join a WhatsApp group if anyone setting one up. Might be easiest for someone to gather numbers through private messages than posting a link on group as any random can join that way 😂

I'm 10 weeks today, due on 10th August.

Also have a friend I've not told yet as she's had a few miscarriages and I'm unsure on how to word it in a message to her without just saying hey I'm pregnant!

You can sleep on your back until 28 weeks. Get a pregnancy pillow if you don't already have one. Follow Dr. Sarah J Murphy on Instagram if you're on it. She's amazing for information like this!

Jusy trying to get out of the habit now. Pregnancy pillow came back out just after we found out, much to husbands annoyance!

I have other issue - I wake up every night around 2 or 3 am and cant get back to sleep for 2 hours. I am also too tired to read or watch anything.
