@Sara1988 I'm doing it after a shower and like @CluelessInLondon I'm massaging a bit before I try and express anything, I think once you find a good technique for you then you will get into a rhythm. Getting it in the syringe can be tricky too! I tried expressing into a small container but the drops kept missing it but I seem to have found a good technique with the syringe now

2doggos · 22/09/2024 22:34

Sorry @Sara1988 I forgot to say it took me about 45 mins to get half a syringe at first but tonight I managed a full one in about 20 mins!

LuxeBiscuit · 22/09/2024 22:47

I haven't managed to collect any colostrum. I'll keep trying daily but if it doesn't happened I'm not too concerned.

Oct24 · 23/09/2024 01:16

I've been trying too. I got .2ml the other night. I'm still a little on the early side and only 37 weeks on Wednesday but dr green lighted me having a try.

I found breastfeeding so empowering with my first. It was a magical superpower that only I could do and give to him.

Sara1988 · 23/09/2024 08:49

@2doggos oh I've been doing it got about 10 minutes! Maybe that's the problem. I have the momcozy colostrum collectors which you squeeze and they stuck it up using a vacuum. Obviously haven't had a chance to try yet but seems like they would be easier.

mrssunshinexxx · 23/09/2024 19:13

Not bothering with it @Sara1988 never have with my other 2 just fed them from the golden hour... for 3 years 😂

Sara1988 · 23/09/2024 19:51

@mrssunshinexxx I think people have just put the fear of God into my about not being able to breast feed/having an emergency c-section that I want to try to have some banked. But if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.

WeightoftheWorld · 23/09/2024 20:44

I had to syringe feed my DC1 some colostrum for I think two of the night feeds on her first night. I fed her at the breast successfully earlier in the day but overnight she became super sleepy and wouldn't feed. We completely forgot to take my frozen ones to the hospital so I had to hand express and do new ones there, but it definitely had helped that I already knew what to do and was confident about expressing some etc. Both my niece and nephew spent some time in the NICU last year and neither were well enough to breastfeed for a little while so that's also influenced me to want to do it again. (Of course there is always formula and I did mix feed both my children anyway.)

Hi everyone. Just wanted to come back to this thread after so many months (I'm sure nobody remembers me 😂). I was originally due in October 2024 but sadly had a miscarriage. I often think of you girls and how I cannot believe how fast time has gone and you are due so soon. Wishing you all the love and luck in the world .xx

Sara1988 · 23/09/2024 22:14

@WeightoftheWorld I posted another thread and lots of people in there also saying learning how to hand express was useful anyway, so I'll persevere! Thank you

mrssunshinexxx · 24/09/2024 04:38

I'm confused as to why that would affect it ? @Sara1988 I've had 2 emc x

CluelessInLondon · 24/09/2024 08:29

@Bb542 What a lovely message, it's so kind of you to be thinking about us all. ❤️ I hope you've been able to process and recover from the loss, and that there's a rainbow baby on the horizon for you before too long.

Is anybody else who's harvesting colostrum finding that they get a lot more from one boob than the other? I managed nearly half a syringe across the whole of yesterday which I was quite pleased with, but definitely noticed much quicker let-down and a lot more coming from the left boob than the right one. I'm not overly worried but wouldn't mind the right boob pulling its weight a bit more. 😂

@Bb542 I remember you 🥺❤️ I think we had the same due date (6th October?)

I hope you are doing as okay as you can be 🥺. My rainbow baby is due so soon, and I really hope you will get yours very soon too 🌈 xx

I think with a c-section some women struggle to breastfeed because the hormones triggered by birth take a bit longer.

Bb542 · 24/09/2024 16:30

@Holl89 @CluelessInLondon I remember you both too. I'm so glad you're both doing well ❤️

I unfortunately had another miscarriage in July this year but have just found out I'm pregnant again. Really hope this is our rainbow baby 🤞🏼

Wishing you all the best and I'll be thinking of you over the next few weeks xx

Bee49 · 24/09/2024 20:18

@Bb542 was thinking about you today! You’re welcome back to the WhatsApp chat whenever you want. So pleased for you and crossing everything that this is 3rd time lucky ❤️❤️

@mrssunshinexxx i was under general so couldn’t feed my son straight away so he had to be given formula. I feel like I really should try this time but I don’t know how people have the time! Also, I didn’t have this problem myself but apparently it can take longer for your milk to come in after a csection. I’m assuming that means some people might have issues even getting colostrum to baby.

@CluelessInLondon really normal for one boob to produce more than the other. And for baby to have a preference!

mrssunshinexxx · 24/09/2024 21:31

@Bee49 I'm heading for my third section, that's myth. The moment the placenta is manually removed or psychologically birthed in a vaginal birth it tells the body to start producing milk

mrssunshinexxx · 24/09/2024 21:33

@Sara1988 due my third section in 3 weeks , that's a myth whether the placenta is manually removed or psychologically during a vaginal birth that's what triggers your body to start producing milk

WeightoftheWorld · 24/09/2024 22:26

@mrssunshinexxx I'm pretty sure haemorrhage is linked to delay in the 'proper' milk coming in though, isn't it? And I think statistically it's more likely to have haemorrhage in relation to a c section than a vaginal birth, especially an emergency one. Of course that can still happen with a vaginal birth too though. I had a haemorrhage with my DC2 (ventouse birth), it was 'small' for a haemorrhage (still had a quick discharge and no need for iron infusions or a blood transfusion or anything). My 'proper' milk took a few days longer to come in that time than with DC1 where I had a 'normal'/smaller amount of blood loss. Babies are also statistically more likely to be somewhat unwell/not in as great a condition if they're born via an emergency section so may mean more of those babies are unable to breastfeed as well immediately too. Of course this is all just averages and most term babies are fine to breastfeed however they are born.

mrssunshinexxx · 25/09/2024 02:39

I've no idea @WeightoftheWorld never heard that before or got told it would be an issue I lost 1.2L in my first emc
I seriously think the main thing you need to be if you are very keen to bf is stubborn as fuck it's a long slog to get established but totally doable and totally worth it I'm so excited to experience it again

CluelessInLondon · 25/09/2024 07:18

@Bb542 I'm sorry to hear that you've had to go through a second loss, it's so unfair that anybody has to experience it once, let alone multiple times. I really hope for you that this is the sticky one that's meant to be. ❤

I've just realised this thread is nearly full - I'll set up a new one and post the link here.
