We did 6 months too @TripleESept24 but as my daughter got nearer to 6 months I started to put her down for naps in the cot in her room to get her used to being in there. We did have an overhead monitor (Cubo AI - highly recommend!) so I could watch/hear her from a Birds Eye view, it connects via WiFi to my phone, and we still use this now.

MrsM89 · 13/04/2024 08:40

@TripleESept24 6 months is the reccomended. I wouldn't of manage this with either of mine as they were up so much still breast feeding in the night I'd of been in and out like a yoyo. Saying that my 4 year old isn't a good sleeper unless she can tell mummy is there next to her and then sleeps super, but a note to new mums really don't put pressure on yourself, every child/baby sleeps differently as long as you are both getting sleep they are all going to grow up one day. Xx

TripleESept24 · 13/04/2024 09:22

Thanks everyone 🥰

Emmaev · 13/04/2024 09:43

Anyone else nervous about their 20 week scan? Wondering when the anxiety around scans might go away!

Also what are everyone’s essentials for a baby? It was 8 years ago that we last did this, so I can barely even remember haha. I do remember we did go ott and bought a lot we didn’t really need.

Khanga27 · 13/04/2024 10:06

@Emmaev same here. Mine is on Monday and I feel a bit nervous about it too, not sure when the scanxiety goes away either

@HRP1990 that sounds so lovely and such a personal way to share a special moment!

@SC126 @cd24x I don’t think I’ve noticed signs when I was in for previous scan, but I did initially wonder if it may have been a private scan thing to have it written down. I’m wondering whether just to appreciate the moment regardless, especially if it looks obvious on the scan anyway.

I've been nervous at each scan, however I am growing by the day and feeling baby move!!! So feeling positive! Mines not till 30th April though 😭

Emmaev · 13/04/2024 10:40

@Khanga27 Im hoping after the 20 week scan and when we know everything is all good I might settle down, but deep down I know I’ll find a new thing to worry about haha

@TripleESept24 I’m feeling baby move more now so it does ease the anxiety a little, my scan is at least in the morning on Tuesday so I won’t have to sit around all day worrying

Mines 11.30am Tuesday 30th ! Good luck let us know how it goes x

MudandMoet · 13/04/2024 12:04

@Emmaev mines 9:30 Tuesday so no waiting about all day too. Hope it's not like last time I went when we were in there over 3 hours. Are you having the whooping cough vaccine whilst there? I am. I wouldn't have been nervous about the scan and have been looking forward to it for some time but I've not felt little bambino move for nearly 3 days now so I am a little anxious and really wanting some reassurance now everything's okay in there.

Emmaev · 13/04/2024 12:15

Mines at exactly the same time @MudandMoet. I totally get you, I’m trying to reassure myself that at this stage they’re still so small and lots of room to move around. Some days I feel baby, some days I don’t. But I feel the scan will be so lovely to see baby again. It’s just such a long time from 12-20 weeks

Xur · 13/04/2024 13:58

@Emmaev I got both-stress about 20W scan and movement stress! Because I’ve had movements so early, when they dim down I go into mini panic mode like I did 2 days ago.

In terms of essentials, apart from the cot and pushchair my next big thing is quality new born clothes of good grade cotton. Me and his father we both have sensitive skin and skin allergies caused by synthetic materials and some metals so it I think there is a risk baby will have sensitive skin aswell. I also need to come up with solutions for places in the house in every room of boxes to keep spare diapers and wet tissues in as all my friends have said, diaper change will happen everywhere in any room in any flat surface. So I will need to measure space where new boxes for the purpose can go into. Also the baby bath…that is another point of focus.

HRP1990 · 13/04/2024 14:02

@Xur look into a nappy caddy! I had 2, 1 for upstairs and 1 for down. You can store nappies/wipes/spare clothes etc in them and it’ll save you going upstairs for example for a nappy every time. If you’re breastfeeding you can pop other things like pads, muslins in.. whatever you’ll be using daily. I found them super helpful, especially when you’re nap trapped!

Xur · 13/04/2024 14:04

@HRP1990 oh fantastic, I just googled them. Look very practical indeed!! ☺️ thank you

Xur · 13/04/2024 15:26

I have a question….
Are bottle sterilisators really necessary? Do we really need to do it? I mean…living in a developed country where generally water is safe. UK tap water is horrible for drinking, but I’m fairly certain it’s safe enough for washing baby bottles. If it wouldn’t be we would have to then bath the babies in bottled water???? 🤨🧐
it just makes no sense in my opinion… am I right or am I wrong?

MudandMoet · 13/04/2024 15:47

@Emmaev I'm seriously wondering if my placenta is lying at the back hence no movements recently and they've just not picked up on it. We're out with friends tonight doing an escape room and then for an Italian after. Apparently this escape room is a particularly scary one so hopefully it'll jolt her into action at some point 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

I ordered two of the nappy caddys from Amazon yesterday they're so reasonable on there. I think I've got enough pampers size 1 now for us all to have enough! Clothes well, she's got a super wardrobe coming on but I need to calm that down because it'll end up wasteful. I got my perfect prep machine and my cocoonababy and pureflo oh and about 100000 gorgeous patterned muslins but other than that nothing big. I really need to do a proper list.

Xur · 13/04/2024 16:05

@MudandMoet I made a notepad file on my desktop and I’m just putting links in there 😂

btw, if the baby has turned around, which they occasionally do, they will be kicking your buttocks and you can’t really feel that. I think mine was turned around when he didn’t kick that day.
can you imagine, what a time to be alive, we are sitting around and waiting to be kicked in the abdomen…

MudandMoet · 13/04/2024 16:29

@Xur hopefully you're right 🤞🏼 just seems so strange after feeling her most nights when I lay on my left side to then go to nothing. I think like we've said before, the worry won't stop until they're safely in our arms - even then there'll be plenty more to worry about 🤪

FuppinNora · 13/04/2024 16:46

@Xur sterilising to kill bacteria. I'm not getting a steriliser though, I got the Mam bottles that can self sterilise bottles in the microwave. You can also just sterilise in Milton.
My midwife told me not to use perfect prep due to bacteria as the water isn't hot enough but it seems 50/50 online. It would make life easier!

No proper movement yet and I'm 19 weeks today! 9 days until 20 weeks scan. I havent bought anything in weeks because I'm anxious that everything is stiil ok.Is anyone getting awful pain near abdomen when sneezing?

SC126 · 13/04/2024 16:53

@FuppinNora i also plan on not bothering with a steriliser this time and just using mam bottles in the microwave. Just simpler! I do plan on using a prep machine. I had one for my eldest too and had no issues. In my mind as long as you run regular cleaning cycles and replace the filters then it's fine. I know some people would disagree though. I always found the hotshot to be very hot from the machine.

Xur · 13/04/2024 16:57

@MudandMoet I know how it is! Stressful! Until that one day, which was a Thursday when I didn’t have movements, for 3 weeks I had 1-2 kicks after I woke up in the morning, about 20 minutes after I was wake. Then several kicks during daytime at work usually between 1300 and 1500. These very rapid and light.

I had kicks when going to bed every night, within 10 minutes of me laying down and recently I had been getting kicks also around 1900 after I had my tea. So those are total 4 times in my waking hours when I was getting episodes of movements and kicks for weeks..every day…

So imagine having all that and then going a full day with NO KICKS AT ALL. I thought I was gonna loose my shit for real.

I have to say I also wonder this I was going to spend £40-50 on an electric one, are the microwave ones the same/do the same job?!? My partner said just use Milton

cd24x · 13/04/2024 18:42

@TripleESept24 @Xur NHS says online that it's to protect against infection, particularly vomiting and diarrhoea. DS had a vomiting bug at 4 months old which he ended up in hospital with because of dehydration. They can go downhill so quickly when they're so little. I guess it's not necessarily about the water used to make the bottles, but bacteria on the bottles themselves?

We used cold water method with Milton tablets with DS as we didn't have a microwave at the time. Once the solution is made up, you can use it for 24 hours without replacing it and we just used to whack everything in there until we needed it. This time we'll be using the MAM bottles again which self sterilise in the microwave.

We went to do an initial scout of travel systems today at John Lewis. It was quite overwhelming to see how many options for everything there is. We’ve made an appointment to properly talk to them about it next week. DH was really excited about all of it - I think he enjoyed being able to get involved in something really practical for the baby, seeing as he can’t help with growing it 😂

SC126 · 13/04/2024 19:04

@Lillers they might have already told you but if you book an appointment and have a John Lewis card then you get 10% off any purchase over 1k and 15% off over 1.5k. Incase you do see something you like. But also check online elsewhere because some other place might have over 10% off etc. I do find them good though for showing you the prams and being able to play with the bigger branded ones.

ForeverHopeful67 · 13/04/2024 19:09

We'll be using a prep machine and steriliser as still have these stored away from using with my daughter!

One thing I didn't know existed until the hospital gave me one was sterilising bags! Absolute god send especially if you're going to someone else's house/ away for the night etc. you just put them in the microwave with a tiny bit of water and you can sterilise two bottles/ dummies etc in two minutes and use them up to 30 times! Can buy them pretty cheap off amazon too! 100% recommend
