@Lillers they might have already told you but if you book an appointment and have a John Lewis card then you get 10% off any purchase over 1k and 15% off over 1.5k. Incase you do see something you like. But also check online elsewhere because some other place might have over 10% off etc. I do find them good though for showing you the prams and being able to play with the bigger branded ones.

Yes that’s our (well, husband’s) plan - work out what we like and want and how much it’ll cost with the discount, and then see how much the equivalent would be elsewhere. I’m very easily sold to so I know I would just want to buy it on the day, so it’s just as well DH is a proper bargain hunter and won’t let me 😂

I had a steriliser last time but it didn't get used, def recommend the mam bottles which you do in the microwave, so quick & easy!
Also used a prep machine with no issues & will be using again - I don't even know how to make up a bottle 'the traditional way'🤣
In terms of baby essentials - outwith the big things don't underestimate how many muslins you will go through!!

LSW82 · 13/04/2024 19:34

@Lillers we got our pram, car seat, snuzpod , prep machine etc all from John Lewis for my son - had the appointment then did a huge order online with the discount - was a fun day when that all got delivered!

@Emmaev I'm seriously wondering if my placenta is lying at the back hence no movements recently and they've just not picked up on it. We're out with friends tonight doing an escape room and then for an Italian after. Apparently this escape room is a particularly scary one so hopefully it'll jolt her into action at some point 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

I ordered two of the nappy caddys from Amazon yesterday they're so reasonable on there. I think I've got enough pampers size 1 now for us all to have enough! Clothes well, she's got a super wardrobe coming on but I need to calm that down because it'll end up wasteful. I got my perfect prep machine and my cocoonababy and pureflo oh and about 100000 gorgeous patterned muslins but other than that nothing big. I really need to do a proper list.

You could have an anterior placenta, meaning she’s got to kick through that to feel much. They’ll probably tell you at your scan, but have faith that she’s in there having a whale of time just nudging different body parts that you can’t feel 🩷🩷🩷

RosiePH · 13/04/2024 19:47

I always see people say get lots of muslins - what do you use them for?! I was with my mum and she bought me some bibs and clothes, so I picked up the matching muslins. I mentioned I’d seen my cousin with some nice ones and my mum said that’s because my auntie used them… said in a tone where she clearly seemed to think the use of muslins was some sort of hippy behaviour she couldn’t agree with 😂

I bought the muslins myself and I’ve heard such positive things and thought they’d be good for clothing protection during feeding.

Xur · 13/04/2024 19:51

@LSW82 I am also going to buy a snuzpod/bedside crib. Do you have any feedback about the snuzpod? I’ve watched YouTube videos but I genuinely cannot take YouTubers seriously.

I was thinking…put a snuzpod in our bedroom, next to my side of the bed and..to maybe buy a Moses basket for the living room? Just for sleep training purposes???
I mean…the snuz pod is not that expensive £149.00 on mamas and papas and a Moses basket is under £100.
and We will look to buy a larger wooden crib later when comes the time to move to a bigger crib in a separate room.

Lillers · 13/04/2024 19:55

@RosiePH My sister swears by muslins- yes for protecting clothing on the baby, but also to have on your shoulder when you’re burping them so they don’t throw up down you, and for wiping up spit up. I know I’ve never held either of my baby nieces without a muzzy to hand!

Xur · 13/04/2024 19:57

@RosiePH Muslins are mainly for wrapping the baby up, for when they sleep for example. Normally small babies are wrapped up for safety reasons when it’s bed time (or they are put into a sort of a sleeping bag/sack).
I was born in 1990, now when I was born there were no diapers yet, so the original muslin was a makeshift diaper. Moms used to wrap our little bums up in these and people went through copious amounts of muslins cos..well..once we pooped into them, they were not thrown out, you washed them and reused them. In my area diapers appeared when I was about 2 years old. I think you had them in the UK already, by 1990, they were slow to import stuff. Also first bananas were imported only around 1987 into my country 😂

SC126 · 13/04/2024 19:59

@Xur a moses basket will be outgrown very quickly so getting a bedside crib such as the snuzpod is better for upstairs for sure. We have an older version of the snuzpod that we kept from last time and would recommend.
I didn't even bother with a Moses basket last time and this time i only have one because it was given to me for free and a new mattress is super cheap.

@RosiePH muslins for catching sick. I hold it under babies chin or on my shoulder when burping basically. My eldest also still sleeps with them like a comfort blanket 🤣

Honeyandsunshine1 · 13/04/2024 20:02

@RosiePH muslins are like the universal kitchen roll. Wipe up milk, baby sick, food you’ve spilt on yourself whilst breastfeeding/formula feeding. Just your general mess cleaner you have on hand 😂

SC126 · 13/04/2024 20:03

@Xur ooh also worth bearing in mind that some of these newer prams have bassinets that are suitable for “overnight sleeping” meaning you can use them like a Moses basket during the day. Some you can even buy stands for. In case you have a pram in mind with that feature.

LSW82 · 13/04/2024 20:06

@Xur that's exactly what I had last time - snuzpod by the bed & Moses basket downstairs - both were fine until he was 6 months & he's not small (not sure if my Moses basket was bigger than average - it is a decent size though)
@RosiePH used muslins for burping / feeding / mopping! Whenever I gave the baby to visitors for a cuddle they would get one 'just in case'!

RosiePH · 13/04/2024 20:09

Thank you all! Funnily enough, my mum always says she could never leave the house without 3 spare outfits for both of us as I was constantly sick due to acid reflux. Looks like she could have used some muslins haha!

On another note, are headaches common in second trimester? I’m 16 weeks today and have had a headache everyday this week. A couple of times I have woken up with a headache after going to bed the night before with one. A few days I’ve have 2 paracetamol for it, but I’m hesitant to take any more.

Xur · 13/04/2024 20:11

@SC126 I am actually scared to even talk about prams, I got no idea…I know me and my partner we will have an argument over prams when we start looking.

SC126 · 13/04/2024 20:14

@RosiePH paracetamol is absolutely fine to take so go ahead and take it if you feel unwell. No point suffering over headaches when we have so much else to deal with during pregnancy! I do think it's common to get them often. Make sure you are keeping hydrated.

DH and I said before we started looking that if we disagree, I get the final say because I’m more likely to use it more often. At least that’s what I’ve said to him and he didn’t disagree 🤷‍♀️

SC126 · 13/04/2024 20:19

@Xur im impressed that he cares so much about prams tbh. My husband said they all look the same to him and he doesn't care what i pick! I wanted him more involved instead

Xur · 13/04/2024 20:36

@SC126 yeah he is very opinionated, last week we were at the jeweller and were browsing the catalogue for wedding rings and his wish was so specific that I had to adjust to what he wanted because we are ordering a pair to be crafted, they will be matching. Just a his and hers version 😂 the upside is that, he is okay to compromise as long as he gets to keep his main idea. Like we did with the rings, I told him okay just put some extra rocks on mine and I’ll be fine 😂

Happylittlebump · 13/04/2024 21:05

Thank you everyone for the tips on here, I will take a look at nappy caddys and a snuzpod I had not heard of them before. I have my 20 week scan the 1st week of May. Does anyone know when we may get offered the options of the different vaccines? Do you think this will be mentioned at the 20 week scan? Or maybe at next appointment with my midwife next week.

rupertbear91 · 13/04/2024 21:16

@Happylittlebump my consultant told me last week we can get the whooping cough vaccines any time from 16 weeks we just have to ring our gp and book it in

Happylittlebump · 13/04/2024 21:18

@rupertbear91 thank you, I will speak to my doctor next week about the vaccine.

LSW82 · 13/04/2024 21:23

I'm Scotland & we get whooping cough at 16wk midwife appointment, mine was earlier than 16 wks though after scan changed my dates so I'm getting it at next midwife appointment
@RosiePH I've also been suffering from headaches the last few days, paracetamol is fine to take , don't think mine helped much today. Sickness been slightly better, but just replaced with headaches!

Lillers · 13/04/2024 21:23

@Happylittlebump Mine said to either book it in with the GP, or she said I can just ask for it when I’m at the hospital for my 20 week scan - she said if I ask at reception they can just do it without an appointment.

OP posts:
malimoon · 13/04/2024 21:37

@Happylittlebump when I went for my 12 week scan there was someone in the waiting room offering whooping cough vaccine to anyone who wanted it - I was obviously too early then but I imagine she'll be there when I go back for my 20 weeks

HRP1990 · 13/04/2024 21:56

@RosiePH around 16 weeks I had a week of a headache a day. Not a proper headache but the start of one I couldn’t shift. They eased up in the end but I did have a random migraine Monday and took all the paracetamol for that!

@Xur we had a Snuzpod and will use that this time around. We also bought a travel cot and used this downstairs in the living room for naps. Kind of a 2 in 1 really as we needed a travel cot when we saw friends/parents etc! So might be a better use of money to do that vs a Moses basket? We still use it now when we stay away, although it’s almost too small now she’s 2!
