Had my 20W scan today morning, baby’s looking fine. As per usual very active. Has been having kung -foo sessions since 0400am tonight. At the scan was no exception. We had the opportunity to see baby drink.
Story time on the topic of foods, some insider knowledge from the procurement industry. Now obviously doctors or dieticians will never say to a pregnant woman “avoid fruit and veg”, because it makes no sense, but realistically the odds of having infection or parasites accidentally entering the body from fruit, veg and berries are much, much… MUCH higher than from meat. And when it comes to meat, processed, fully cooked meat is more likely to have stuff in there that should not be there.
The compliance on smoked, cured, pickled… meats and dairy for the largest stores is extremely scrupulous not just on the process, but also the sourcing the quality of it.
…and then you have the fruit.
any fruit, veg and berries, especially the ones that are imported from outside the EU have a risk of having an array of cultures and life forms on it. The largest culprit is salmonella or any other bacteria you can get from contamination with stool/poop/hands.
It’s so dangerous because people often do not wash their fruit, veg, berries often.
some of the biggest importers in UK are actually forging papers and making their suppliers compliant in the face of the law and the chains they supply into. When the money is rough procurement managers and heads of the company will have quarantined product pushed through into the stores therefor compromising the health risk.
Now I am not a keyboard warrior from online and I do not say this from Google or kitchen gossip. I used to work in procurement, I was a buyer. I left the industry because they wanted me to bend my moral standard and to push unsuitable fruit into the biggest chains in UK so that they wouldn’t have to loose money on it. After seeing this and quitting the industry, speaking to knowledgeable people I found out the true volume of this, most companies do this.
Obviously not all product is infected, but it’s much more common in the fruit/ veg, than it is with meats or dairy.
If you want to exercise extra caution on food, make sure you thoroughly wash all your fruit, veg and berries before having them. Some stuff people don’t wash because they don’t eat the outside like papaya, melons, passion fruit, etc…but you should. Oh, and pregnant women absolutely have to stay away from coconut, fresh coconut. Don’t even think of going on a holiday and having some fresh coconut water from the locals, like a straw in the coconut. A coconut can be deadlier than the mouldiest of cheeses.
I stay away from prepped salads, those are the worst.
any Caesar salad kits or other leafy salad kits-need to be religiously washed before eating.
Obviously at the end of the day everyone assumes their own risk, I am just sharing my knowledge.
Also…any product that is not good enough for stores, gets sold off to markets. So don’t buy from markets unless you know the grower/seller and are certain it’s local product.
