Everyone who is trying to harvest colostrum - what do express into?

I haven’t tried yet as not 37w but I was given a kit with syringes in but not sure what to express into and then pour into the syringe?

Clueless13 · 24/01/2024 21:17

@Nemo145 Congratulations! Hope you’re both doing well 🩵

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 24/01/2024 21:24

@Clueless13 I find the Haaka silicon 4ml syringes easiest but they're £20 for 6. But easy to get the colostrum in.

Otherwise you can use the syringes you were given to suck little bits of colostrum up as it comes out

CharXo · 24/01/2024 21:28

@Clueless13 i read somewhere that someone was doing it into a sterilised bottle lid and then sucking it up the syringe from there. Sounded like a good idea to me! I’m scared to try yet as I don’t want to bring on labour! I’m going to give it a go a few days before my section I think

CheeseAndCrackersx · 24/01/2024 21:42

So currently I have;
On & off bump cramps in different areas, top or sides
Intense pelvic pressure more so when standing up & waddle when I walk
Pelvic pain like period pain
Lower back ache on & off when my bump is cramping too
Yesterday began an increase in how much I go to the toilet (1&2🫢)
& tonight I feel so sick 🤢

But had no increase in discharge or a "show"
So no clue at all

Gardenfingers23 · 24/01/2024 21:45

I’ve just started to try and get some colostrum in the last 2 days, I’m 36w2d, and got nothing! My boobs also felt really sore afterwards. I’m hoping that just by massage and nipple stimulation I may start to see some more production in the next week. I also think using the little syringes to suck droplets off your nipple is super awkward and maybe the sterilised lid idea is a good one, but as it stands at the moment I’m getting what just looks like a little bit of wetness and deffo not enough to keep in a syringe!! Any tips very welcome!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 24/01/2024 22:03

@Gardenfingers23 you might end doing this already, but pinching about an inch away from the actual nipple, and working around it like a clock helped me to get more

Kelb79 · 24/01/2024 22:49

so I’ve been experimenting with the colostrum harvesting and watching a lot of different videos as it just wasn’t happening, I finally got a bit of success with a technique that seemed a little different so it might work for those of you that are struggling….

massage & gentle nipple stimulation to start with, working from outside to centre.
cup breast with one hand in a C shape.
position forefinger and thumb of other hand directly opposite each other on the outer edge of the nipple, push straight inwards as if you’re trying to flatten the breast and then gently pull straight outwards at the same time as gently squeezing the finger and thumb together 👍🏼

work around the nipple in different positions 👌🏼

hope that makes sense! I was getting nowhere until I tried like this 🤣🤣

Mangotango39 · 24/01/2024 23:13

LavenderSweetPea · 25/01/2024 09:09

Morning ladies and babies! I know we discussed this a little while ago, but how often is everyone now getting up to pee in the night? I was only getting up once or twice until a week or so ago, but it's suddenly ramped up to be like 5-6, (ie like every 90 minutes) and I'm just not sure that's normal? I've also been having pain in my lower abdomen at night and I wonder if I actually have a UTI.

Weirdly though the abdomen pain and the need to pee quite so much go away in the day so I'm totally confused.

msp2023 · 25/01/2024 09:29

@LavenderSweetPea I'm up every 90-120 mins or so!
After I pee, I get lower belly cramp too.
Assuming it's because my bladder has been so full before my body's decided to wake up to go to the loo!

I think this is pretty standard so I wouldn't worry unless you have other symptoms such as burning, or the urgent desire to pee but nothing comes out etc.

Hotpolarbear · 25/01/2024 10:21

I get up about 6/8 times a night to pee. That's between 11pm and 7am!

anony1111 · 25/01/2024 11:01

Toilet trips have definitely increased for me too! I guess as baby grows and moves down it will be more pressure on the bladder.

The hospital have finally called and booked me in for a scan tomorrow morning! No more phone watching, thank goodness!
