When do they normally do the glucose test? My midwife hasn’t mentioned it to me at all. I’ve got further blood tests at my 28 week appointment but I’m not sure if that’s standard or because of the extra monitoring I get for anaemia. She did say that she’d weigh me at my next appointment too to see how I was getting on because I’d ended up losing weight by the end of my first trimester and my fundal height is tracking a tiny little bit small. Will she weigh me then decide on the glucose test?

Hey everyone
Just reading through messages.
I’ve been feeling sick on and off the last couple of weeks (24wks + 4). And my sleeping is not going great. Aching back, but also my legs… they are very very restless, I can’t keep them still at night!!! I also keep getting really hot in the middle of the night and had a heat rash a few times too (I often get them in the summer). I have a bbhugme (which I love) and also saw a physio which has really helped with my back… but the leg thing is too much!! Anyone else getting this?

hey, sorry you're not sleeping great. i think you may have restless leg syndrome. have you spoken to ur MW about it?

I was offered the glucose test as i have a family history of it and from a ethnic group who are more prone to diabetes, so this time at 16 weeks it came back negative but i have to redo at 26 weeks. Really hoping i don't have diabetes this time as i don't want to be induced for once!

TheBirdintheCave · 06/02/2024 11:04

@SarahBowie Seems a mystery to me as to when they do it! I've been told repeatedly that I'll have one and was even given a slip last time for the reception staff to book it in but no one has 🤔I'll be 28 weeks before I see anyone next as well.

SarahBowie · 06/02/2024 12:22

Thanks ladies! I’ll just wait and see if my midwife mentions anything at my 28 week appointment then

Emmacb82 · 06/02/2024 13:21

I’ve got my glucose test at 28 weeks, seems like there is a variation of timings for it! Mines because I’m ancient, I’ve never had it in my other pregnancies.
I feel the pain of restless legs! Luckily it doesn’t normally follow me to bed but every evening when I’m sitting watching tv my legs just won’t stop twitching, I’ve had it every pregnancy so far. I find it helps if my legs aren’t too hot, and I used to bounce on my gym ball if it got really bad.

Nina7 · 06/02/2024 15:01

Oh, I hadn't realised that the glucose test was not being done routinely... I've got mine booked in three weeks.

I can't say that the midwives have been very clear on why I'm having some tests or not... 🙄my grandma had gestational diabetes, maybe that's the risk factor.
I've got an appointment with them tomorrow, hopefully I'll get someone that will be enlightening.

I'm happy to do the test because I'm actually a bit worried... I was normal BMI before the pregnancy, but I've really put on a lot of weight! About 11kg already.

Do you know if there is any complications with birth and weight?
Do they tend to force an induction, or not let you use the midwife led unit if you put too much weight? I'll be well into obese with this rate by the time I've got to give birth...
On the 20 week scan the baby was normal, around 50th percentile.

I have a glucose test at 28weeks - even though I'm low risk overall, because of ethnic origin they automatically test for it.

In a separate note has anyone got a method for counting baby movements? Or a recommended app? I'm going to start monitoring soon so can document normal pattern for my baby.

TheBirdintheCave · 07/02/2024 11:45

@GratefulMum10 Nope, the last midwife I spoke to about it just said to 'be aware' of what was normal, rather than actually counting specific kicks and specific times etc. So, in my case, I've noticed that my baby likes a kick about after meals and goes a bit crazy in there in the evening.

Nina7 · 07/02/2024 15:10

I just had my midwife appointment, she measured the belly, all fine. She also booked me in for a tour of the delivery facilities of the hospital this evening, which I am very happy about!
Our local hospital has both a midwife lead unit and a central delivery suite, so there is some choice. Have people started thinking about birth preferences? I'm doing a hypnobirthing course this weekend...

@GratefulMum10 I asked her about counting movements and patterns and she said they don't advise counting, but from now on movements should become a bit consistent with a vague pattern. For example resting after dinner in the evening can bring movements. If that is the case for you and suddenly it stops, then it's good to contact them asap. She said after 28 weeks to contact the hospital directly.

Sa11yCinnamon · 07/02/2024 15:17

@Nina7 ooh that's cool! I've not really thought about preferences yet, at the very start I was told I would most likely need a C-section due to the shape of my womb but it wasn't mentioned at my most recent scan. I've got my first growth scan at the end of this month and should see the consultant then so I'm going to see what she says and then start thinking more about it all. My yoga teacher does a workshop that sounds similar to hypnobirthing which I'm definitely going to do if there's any chance of not needing a section.

SarahBowie · 07/02/2024 15:42

@Nina7 I also had a great chat to my midwife about birthing preferences. I’m 100% going to the midwife led unit as it’s actually closer to my house than the hospital. I’ve got the birthing pool down as an option as well but we’ll talk about that more at my next appointment.

I also have it down now officially that I will not accept an induction under any circumstances (various reasons why). If I go overdue I’ll be a section at 40+4 she thinks and if for any reason they need to get baby out before her due date, it’ll be a section.

Holdmysunhat · 07/02/2024 16:59

@Twinkles18 I’m thinking about refusing mine too. It’s such a faff. Like you, I didn’t have it in my last pregnancy so I’m willing to risk it.

My mum’s ethnic group supposedly puts me at risk but on Googling it, it seems that black, South Asian and SE Asian ladies are genetically predisposed and that’s not our ethnicity so I feel confident(ish) in my decision.

LondonGirl1992 · 07/02/2024 19:46

I had the glucose test because baby was measuring so big in the 20 week scan. I was confident I didn’t have it because I had no symptoms (she said extreme thirst and blurry vision are most common). My bloods came back as 4.0 as the initial measure and 4.4 after 2 hours, so the lower end which is good! I’m relieved as if I did have it, I’d have not been able to have a water birth which I do really want (obviously I know plans have to be loose anyway!).

I personally found it really hard with hyperemesis- the starvation and then the sugary drink had me reaching and sat there feeling on the brink of throwing up for the entire 2 hours. I felt so sick by the end and I’ve not been able to shift the nausea since. I really didn’t enjoy it! My top tip is take a sandwich for after so you can eat straight away as I’d have struggled getting home otherwise without being sick!

LondonGirl1992 · 07/02/2024 20:12

Also does anyone have any recommendations for restless legs? I can’t shift it!

Colourfulflowers · 09/02/2024 03:45

@LondonGirl1992 I get it in the middle of the night and it wakes me up. My physio recommended various stretches and walking during the day, particularly in the evening. I’ve also tried pregnancy massage. It has helped but hasn’t gone. Hope yours begins to clear soon!! 🌼

SarahBowie · 10/02/2024 10:52

We went for a 4d scan today for my birthday and it was so lovely! We’ve got some great photos of her.

Had measurements confirmed again too and she’s still tracking along at the 50th centile which is great. She’s currently estimated to be 2lb1 at 25+6 which I’m told again is entirely normal. Poor little thing seems to have taken after her dad though and has massive feet 😂 they’re already nearly 5cm!

Nelliepledge · 10/02/2024 20:36

Have people managed to maintain a healthy diet throughout their pregnancy? I am hoping people will say no 😂 despite the greatest of intentions and in between fruit & veg and alot of water there has also been alotttt of junk food and I feel guilty for it 😂xx

Nelliepledge · 10/02/2024 20:39

Also anyone had any spotty vision or circulatory problems? Episode of spotty vision in one eye has happened 3 times now lasting about 15 minutes, and today my hands went numb and tingly for about 15 mins. Other than that iv been fine, BP within normal range at checkups, and midwife says normal and can happen. Anybody else?xxx

Holdmysunhat · 10/02/2024 22:00

@Nelliepledge I ate such rubbish in the first trimester! I didn’t eat much from sickness but just ate pure junk when I had appetite. I was really into KFC which I’ve not had since I was a teenager. The poor kid must have had a rough start on the dietary front when all its organs were forming!

Great that you’re eating fruit and veg at least and you surely get a pass on the rest because you’re pregnant! The body wants what it wants!

Maybe you’re growing a large baby. My appetite was insatiable during my last pregnancy and I had a near 10 pounder. I’m a small, slim person and the hospital staff kept asking if my partner was big/very tall. He’s not! I just ate a lot and grew a big one.

Yourowgirl · 12/02/2024 10:18

@Nelliepledge I have been low level concerned about this too. I went off fresh fruit and vegetables in my first trimester and was so nauseous I mainly wanted to live off crisps, chips and carbonated drinks. I was told at my 12 week scan not to worry too much, that the baby will take what it needs and it is more likely to be me that feels the lack of nutrients first. I am eating better in my second trimester but still crave fizzy citrus drinks and I'm now really hungry and it just isn't practical to eat healthy snacks every time I need them. All we can do is our best, I've had every indication baby is thriving considering my worries.
I also get pins and needles in my feet and hands now and again, have been advised it's normal.

Athena1984 · 12/02/2024 10:41

Hello, just been to the midwife appointment. She did a bump measurement and baby size is plotting below the third percentile 🙁. She arranged a growth scan for this evening! Any one previously had this?

Holdmysunhat · 12/02/2024 22:27

Oh no. How did it go @Athena1984? I assume the bump measurements aren’t super accurate what with different bodies and different positions so that’s good that they’re following up so quickly

Athena1984 · 12/02/2024 22:37

@Holdmysunhat in the scan the baby is now at 10th centile but they also said the abdominal circumference is at the lower end of the normal range and told us to go to triage to see a doctor. We have been waiting here for 4 hours, hopefully they will see us soon!
