I quite liked the idea of a surprise with my first but Hubby was keen to know and after some discussion we decided to find out at 20wk scan. It was actually really nice to 'know' who was in there and it made me feel able to bond a bit more with baby before he got here. It also gave me time to process being a boy Mamma - didn't have any preference but felt a bit thrown at first when it was a boy as there are so many girls in both our families I think I was a bit more mentally prepared for raising a daughter! That said, I'm sure I'd have been equally fine with getting my head around it at the birth! This time round we will find out again. Partly as I think it will be helpful to prep toddler for 'baby brother' or 'baby sister' and just get things ready a bit more etc.

katherine123x · 22/03/2023 11:47

@iloveeggs I've also noticed some uncomfort when coughing which is normal too apparently!

Soda123x · 22/03/2023 12:22

We didn't find out with our 1st. And planning on not finding out again this time xx

We’re a bit odd as we found out for our first but having surprise this time! DH really wanted a boy first time (but by the time we went for the scan he’d convinced himself he would like a girl 😂). We had a boy so I’m happy either way. I’d love two boys but equally one of each. So exciting!

Chanteuse · 22/03/2023 13:47

You ladies not finding out have some willpower 🤣 I’m actually going to book a 16 week scan so I can find out!

OrionNebula · 22/03/2023 13:50

Definitely finding out, we should hopefully know in a few days when we get fetal harmony results back. We found out last time too. Similar reasons to @SnookyPook - it made her feel more real to me and I liked referring to her as 'she' or 'her' rather than 'the baby'. Plus it gave me and DH longer to argue about names 😂

I always find that people have weirdly strong opinions on this. It really shouldn't matter to anyone either way other than the parents, but I've seen Mumsnet threads where people get positively vitriolic at the idea of finding out, "why can't people just wait" etc... and I remember telling a friend of DH's mum on my last pregnancy that we planned to find out, the look she gave me, you'd think I'd said we were going to sell the kid on eBay! Hmm

Derv1 · 22/03/2023 14:45

Got my letter for my first scan today, it's 7th April. Started spotting this morning at 9 weeks 5 days, rang early pregnancy clinic and they can't see me until Friday so I've booked a private scan for 8.15pm tonight. Please please please let everything be OK.

katherine123x · 22/03/2023 14:50

@Derv1 thoughts are with you!!! Is it light??
Please let us know when you get the all clear with baby bean tonight. I'm sure everything will be ok. Try and relax xxxx

Derv1 · 22/03/2023 14:53

@katherine123x it's brown/pink/red ,not heavy and not everytime I wipe.. I will update tonight surely.. I really hope its just normal spotting that can happen..

katherine123x · 22/03/2023 14:56

@Derv1 absolutely!!! It can be totally normal but completely understand why you are worried. I would be too. The best way to relieve your anxiety is a scan so you are doing the right thing 💗

Koalawhala · 22/03/2023 15:16

@Derv1 fingers crossed all is well for you. Great that you can get a private scan so quickly

Derv1 · 22/03/2023 15:18

@Koalawhala yea there is so many scan places around here, it was reasonably priced too..but I'm just going out of my mind now waiting

SlowlyGainingConfidence · 22/03/2023 15:49

@Midnight00 just turned 37 here, for some reason it's chromosome issues that my anxiety has attached to this time. Cant afford private nipt otherwise I'd do it, so waiting for 12 week results (I'm 8 weeks, scan is 13 weeks so while to wait yet). My trust offers nipt if risk score is high at least.

NSx · 22/03/2023 15:49

We’re not finding out, it will be a struggle but I’ve heard the excitement of not knowing helps you through labour 😂😂😂😂 as you’re so excited to find out what it is?

SlowlyGainingConfidence · 22/03/2023 15:57

@Koalawhala sonographer saying he or she typically doesn't mean anything, most have one that they say regardless of if they can see the sex as they prefer that to saying it or they.

We didn't find out last time but I would like to this time while partner doesn't want to so we'll see. Last time we were both so out of it we didn't care & didn't even look! And having had PND last time I'm feeling I want to know as much as possible this time

iloveeggs · 22/03/2023 16:13

@Derv1 Thinking of you! Hoping all will be okay.

My MIL was disgusted at us when we said we were finding out as early as possible. Started going on about how it's the only surprise in life 🙄I'll do what I want thanks!

Alexandra07 · 22/03/2023 16:28

@Derv1 I hope everything goes well tonight!

I am definitely finding out if it's a boy or a girl! I want to prepare my daughter, sell all the dresses that no longer fit her if it's a boy, and start early looking for a name. It was hard for us to find a name for a girl, impossible task to have a boy's and girl's name ready!

Derv1 · 22/03/2023 16:37

Thanks guys x

Chanteuse · 22/03/2023 16:43

Hope everything goes well later @Derv1

I hate surprises in normal circumstances so I defo can’t cope pregnant 🤣

I’m finding I’m really emotional this week - feel like I’ve got the weight of the world on my shoulders 😩 have cried twice today already 🥴

Jigglemonster · 22/03/2023 17:16

Hope it goes well this evening @Derv1 And best of luck everyone waiting for their nipt results. I got mine back and thankfully all came back v.low and having another boy.

I'm so disappointed though, just under 12 weeks and I already have started to get pelvic girdle pain. It didn't start til 24+ weeks last time and ended up on crutches by 30 weeks so really stressing now. Last time I didn't have a toddler to wrangle!

Koalawhala · 22/03/2023 17:30

Congrats @Jigglemonster! Sorry about your pelvic pain. I fractured my pelvis a few years ago so not sure what pain will be in store for me this time round.
Did you try an oesteopath or acupuncture when you had the pain last time? or wear a pelvic girdle? Just some of the things I’ve read about and might try if the time comes

EMcG3 · 22/03/2023 17:38

@Jigglemonster - I am sorry to hear you are getting PGP. I didn't.havr it last time around but it both is and was something that really freaks me out as I commute on public transport and that seems like a particularly terrible combination.

I want to find out sex. A new baby is enough on its own without throwing in a surprise. Also we have both a naming and circumcision catastrophe (name has to work in two very different languages, male circumcision is customary in my husband's culture but he is opposed. I expect if we had a boy it would be a big, awful family drama). I think this is all better to deal with pre-baby.

LaVitesse2022 · 22/03/2023 18:43

@Derv1 best of luck for this evening, I hope everything goes well and they put your kind at ease.

Before I got pregnant I felt very strongly I didn't want to know as I didn't want to start attaching unconscious stereotypes to the baby so soon. But since getting pregnant and not being able to wait for the 12 week scan I know I won't be able to wait till birth to find out the sex. I want as much info as possible! I also found from friends' pregnancies that once you know the sex of the baby it stops being this abstract thing and you actually starting thinking about that little one as a person. Don't quite know why, but it's true.

I just don't get people who react like this. It is literally no-one else's business! I get why people have strong views on topics like breastfeeding, sleep training etc as they may possibly have implications for the welfare of the baby, but when it comes to finding out the sex.... it ultimately makes no difference either way, it's just a personal preference.

CB23CB · 22/03/2023 19:26

Random but anyone else really itchy? Like both my arms. What's this about!!

Had a friend give birth to her first little one yesterday, so exciting!
