Had a 30 week appointment today with my Diabetes nurse and consultant. So far despite GD they are happy to let me go full term but because it's IVF they won't let me go past 40 weeks)

We had a really good discussion about sweeps, induction and c-sections. She said chances of emergency c-section after induction are 1 in 4. They're more than happy for me to pencil in an elective section for 40 weeks, have sweeps at 38 & 39 weeks to induce natural labour and have my c-section rather than induction if the sweeps don't work.

Ideally, I'll go into labour and have the pool birth I really want. But given the choice between induction and section, it's a no brainer for me

TeddyBeans · 17/01/2023 21:49

@ChristmasJumpers sounds like a productive day! I hope this isn't an uncomfortable question for you, please don't answer it if you don't want to, but is the reason they won't let you go over 40 weeks because they know with absolute certainty what day you fell pregnant?

1 in 4 is quite high, I'm surprised by that! It's nice to know an actual figure though. A pool birth would be my dream too, hoping I get good news at Thursday's scan and a pool birth is still on the cards for me 🤞 hopefully it becomes reality for both of us!

That sounds really positive Christmas. Its nice to feel listened to isn’t it? I really thought they’d say a flat out no to the pool for me so I was really pleased when she said it would be fine and wrote it in my notes without me having to push for it in any way. I would absolutely love to go into labour naturally in week 37 so we will have the try the old wives tales!

ChristmasJumpers · 17/01/2023 21:55

@Cuppasoupmonster it was a brilliant appointment, I came out feeling really happy 😊 this is still all dependant on my next two growth scans of course!

@teddybeans I don't know exactly why they won't let me go over 40 weeks, all I know is it's their policy for IVF births. Interestingly they brought my due date forward by 3 days after my 12 week scan, so their 40 weeks is 27th March, while in my head I've stuck with the date I know to be right from IVF, 30th March!

ChristmasJumpers · 17/01/2023 21:56

@Cuppasoupmonster & @TeddyBeans hopefully we all get our straight forward water births 🤞

TeddyBeans · 17/01/2023 22:11

@ChristmasJumpers will they stick to their 40 weeks for your ELCS do you think?

Sorry for 20Q's, my curiosity gets the better of me sometimes 🙈

OP posts:
Katdemar · 17/01/2023 22:21

@ChristmasJumpers
I'm also IVF. The reason I was told we're not allowed to go over is that the placenta is more likely to 'conk out' (in non medical parlance). They don't know why, and it's not all pregnancies, but just a higher risk.

Interesting about the birth plan you have, I might propose it in my case. I really don't want to be induced (read far too many horror stories about assisted births for work purposes), but it does feel like my only option, as it's unlikely for first child to have spontaneous birth before 39 weeks - which when they've said they'd want me to be induced. According to NCT stats on their webpage a third of all inductions end up with either forceps or vacuum or emergency CS.

I had my final consultant meeting today, feels like a milestone in pregnancy! ☺️ she was very happy with baby's growth and my bloods.

Now the next little milestones:
34 weeks - late preterm if baby comes early
36 weeks - stopping Aspirin and final growth scan

And then the grand finale 🤩 baby!

Choc2022 · 18/01/2023 03:13

I plan to take maternity from the monday of the week or my duedate. A bit late but I'm working from home and trying to maximise time on the other end. I thought my maternity policy would be better so I need to save during maternity to pay for the 3 months statutory I intend to take.

bit annoying my company mat leave policy changes in April for babies due April onwards where they offer additional 3 weeks full pay. I've asked for an exception as I miss out by only 7 days.

I've been told because of GD I will not be able to go over due date.

Blocklynn · 18/01/2023 07:01

@Choc2022 thats really annoying about when they have changed the date from! I hope you can get the extra pay.
My work are changing their maternity policy but because I’m part time I don’t think it will make me any better off. The HR woman announced it to me like it’s the best thing ever and to full time workers it’s great, just not me 🤦‍♀️

ChristmasJumpers · 18/01/2023 08:31

@Katdemar that makes sense I suppose. I forgot all about forceps yesterday so I'm extra glad they're giving me the EC option when you factor in assisted birth!!!

@TeddyBeans I'm guessing so but I will see how I'm feeling and if I can maybe push them a bit later and give her a chance to decide she's coming on her own

havanamama · 18/01/2023 08:58

Have you all booked nurseries already?

I read a post yesterday somewhere that said many in busy areas are booked until end of 2024! 🤨

TeddyBeans · 18/01/2023 09:16

@havanamama omdays that's ridiculous! The thought hadn't even entered my head but I guess it depends on when you need childcare to start. I'm lucky enough to have grandparents nearby that want to help out so when I go back to work little lady will be with one or t'other of them. She won't start nursery until the 3 year funding kicks in (if it's still a thing by then, who knows)

Franklin321 · 18/01/2023 09:19

@havanamama at my son’s nursery there’s a years waiting list so I’ve put baby on it already to start later this year. When I was looking for my son I started when he was about 2 months and found space relatively easy but it’s definitely dependent on the area so might be worth looking into if you know there’s long waits local to you!

Babynum2 · 18/01/2023 09:21

No I never booked nursery this early on just few months before I wanted them to start. DP does security so we are planning on me going back to cleaning when baby is 4months and he will do the nights I will work the days.
I started my maternity in July due to my leaking Walters and stitch so I'm looking forward to going back to work and having my own money we are both self employed.

Perexi · 18/01/2023 09:29

Wow haven't even considered childcare seriously yet! We are both hoping to move to condensed hours and my mum is keen to help but imagine we would want some other care a day or two a week just feels crazy to look before he's even with us!

Cuppasoupmonster · 18/01/2023 09:33

We booked DD’s nursery 6 months before she was due to start. Generally they have spaces but very in demand/posh ones need prebooking apparently. My only advice would be that kids in nursery 1 or 2 days a week tend not to settle as well as kids that are in for 3 or 4, to a toddler 6 days is a long time so they then need ‘resettling’ into the nursery each week (according to my friend and nursery workers I’ve spoken to). It’s so expensive though 😱

AGirlsNameIsAryaStark · 18/01/2023 10:09

I have started looking a little bit already at childcare, only as i'll be going back a lot earlier than most and in an ideal world bub will be going to a childminder rather than nursery. The difference in cost is unbelievable in my area!

ChristmasJumpers · 18/01/2023 10:45

My mum is a childminder so baby will he going to her. Need to sort out Mondays though as my mum has another job and doesn't childmind on Mondays! I feel like it's going to be quite tough finding a nursery for 1 day a week 😱

havanamama · 18/01/2023 10:50

Ohh so really depends on the area then 🧐

We will need a nursery from April 2024, so still got time, but maybe need to actually start inquiring.
I've read about people booking in babies that aren't even born yet!!

Babynum2 · 18/01/2023 10:59

My son starts school in September so I've planned this very well so I don't have to pay for 2 children or it wouldn't even be worth it. He goes 5 days a week 9-3 and he's done that since he was 2 and loves it so hoping to use the same nursery again when baby turns 2.

Babynum2 · 18/01/2023 11:53

This stroller is suitable from birth and its a lot less money than the yoyo but very similar. It's £169 called the kinderkraft indy 2 folds up small and lightweight for those looking to travel with baby.

allthingssparkly · 18/01/2023 12:33

Oooo I'll have to remember that pushchair recommendation @Babynum2 as we are going away this October and will need one lightweight that folds easy for taking on the plane!

JB2021 · 18/01/2023 12:47

Booked nursery in December. A friend advised that you won't want to look in the first few months after baby is here and then you need to research then could be hard to get where you want.

The nurseries we viewed weren't surprised at how early we were looking. Baby starting in March 2024.
