Re: nappies - when they're tiny you're changing them so frequently that it doesn't really matter which brand you use. We've got pampers, Asda, Tesco and Aldi ones to test out but I don't think there's going to be a massive difference in fit until they're toddling

I've got 1 pack of Lidl and 1 pack of Amazon own brand size 1 nappies so far.

In the next food shop I'll add in some Asda ones too.

Dreamingof3 · 03/01/2023 15:44

@Franklin321 I've used my sister in law's when at hers and tbh don't find them any easier so for me they aren't worth the extra cost. I do premake bottles though which is apparently wrong but 🤷😂

Dreamingof3 · 03/01/2023 15:45

Katdemar · 03/01/2023 15:18

Also Boots are currently doing an offer of save 15% on selected baby products when you spend £30. Those talking about MAM bottles these are included.

That's good!

LifeOfRiley1 · 03/01/2023 15:46

On the subject of bottles.. I plan to attempt breastfeeding however should I have a stock of bottles/perfect prep machine just in case? First time mum and beginning to feel very clueless!!!

Franklin321 · 03/01/2023 15:48

@Dreamingof3 oh yeh, if you pre-make it’s probably very similar! I would pre make if I didn’t have the machine to do it for me 😂 F waiting around at 3am for a bottle to cool!

I'm like you and planning to breastfeed hopefully, but have the following prepared for the first days in case it doesn't work out :
3 bottles (can sterilise in microwave)
Ready to drink formula
Microwave bottle steriliser bags

If it doesn't work out with breastfeeding, then we will Amazon Prime order the Tommee Tippee perfect prep machine.

Hi ladies I hope everyone is doing well. Wondered if anyone has any travel system recommendations possibly no more than £250?
32 weeks today, time is creeping up fast now and I also have a couple of birthdays before due date that I need to sort 😩🙈

Dreamingof3 · 03/01/2023 17:35

@BabyNumber3OnTheWay this is the one I got, says out of stock ATM but they do tend to get them back in regularly

Had a 28 week growth scan today due to gestational diabetes. So far so good and baby is on the 55th percentile, the doctor doesn't think my GD is affecting her growth at all for now. Has anyone else been diagnosed with it and having trouble with snacks?

Also, reality has hit with it being the actual year we meet our babies! I'm starting to worry about being "mum" around other people as I feel like I've always been the young/ditzy one in my family's eyes. Does anyone worry about this? I'm scared they'll be judging me (I have a very excited and supportive family so I have absolutely no basis for this)

I'm not worried to be a mum, but at family gatherings I have been more aware of the ways they parent their children and what I would do differently. I know sleepovers and babysitting is likely very, very far away, but I've been thinking about how we will convey the ways our child is raised.

Thinking of simple things that many people do, but we might not want to - e.g making the child finish the last peace on the plate until it's empty, brushing teeth in the evenings and morning not just once a day, not teetering the child with spanking, etc.

Does anyone else think of this? 😅 or how have you approached this with "family childcare"?

BabyNumber3OnTheWay · 03/01/2023 18:22

@Dreamingof3 that’s lovely thank you 😊

LittleAcorn20 · 03/01/2023 19:01

@Katdemar I have used reusable maternity pads with my first. Would just say get some disposable ones anyway for first few days and also when you haven't quite managed to turn round the washing!
Washable breastpads I didn't get on with and preferred to revert back to the disposable ones.
Also did cloth nappies with my daughter and intend to do them again this time round.
Cheeky wipes are fantastic for washable wipes. Their full kit with the storage boxes and washing bags are great.
Nappies wise - there are lots of local "Nappy Libraries" which are charity/volunteer based that will do loan packs so you can see which brands and styles you get on with/don't. They often also link with local councils who'll give you a monetary incentive for trialling cloth.
There's a good group on FB called Cloth Nappies UK which is good for advice.
Two biggest tips are - don't buy lots of one brand too quickly, invest in a couple from a few different brands until you know what you like. And also just don't put too much pressure on yourself. Have some disposables to hand too, use cloth as little or as much as suits you. If there are times it feels too much, step away from it for a bit. That was always how I did it with DD1, if we were having a rough week with illness or poor sleep or changes to routine like holiday, I just reverted back to disposable.
Happy to chat more/DM me. But local nappy libraries and the FB group are good starting points too.
Also the Nappy Lady website. You can take a questionnaire on there for free and it recommends you a few brands suited to you.

As suspected admitted this morning at midwife app +4 keatons in wee and haven't eaten in 3 days. I'm on the fluids and having my anti sickness through the drip so hopefully sort me out this is my 4th overnight admission in this pregnancy I usually hate it but as guilty as I feel I'm looking forward to tonight's break from my 2 over stimulated sprogs at home after being off of school/nursery for 2 weeks and being unwell myself!

Kcheey · 03/01/2023 19:45

With my first I struggled to breastfeed and after a week found out he had a tongue tie and wasn’t latching on properly. This was only found when the Health visitor came round. I was in such a state at this point she advise me to start bottle feeding. I hadn’t brought bottles or planed to, so my mum popped to boots and brought me some. This time I plan to breastfeed again if possible, I haven’t brought bottles but an electric breast pump, which came with 2 bottles and if I do struggle again I will express. I have a cold water steriliser as they’re really useful for sterilising toys etc.

Dreamingof3 · 03/01/2023 19:45

@Babynum2 I hope after a good rest and down fluids you are feeling better!

@havanamama we have 2 already and we discussed early on the things that we felt were really important. My main ones are not telling children that they can't feel how they feel/not to cry etc. And food related, absolutely agree with you about not making them finish what's on their plate....I was brought up like that and it cause me lots of issues with food. With regards to other family members...I'm confident in why I parent the way I do and therefore have no issue telling other people (they may not agree but they're my kids not theirs 🤷) A big one with family I have found is not forcing the children to hug or kiss if they don't want to, some older generations seem to think it's disrespectful, but I think it's disrespectful to children to teach them that their personal space is not safe!

So true!

Is anyone going down the route of using washable nappies, wipes and breast pads?

I'm quite keen on this idea. I think our plan is do washable whilst at home and then use disposable when out and about for convenience.

Yes, we’ll be using washable nappies, wipes and pads again this time.
Although most likely I will buy one pack of newborn size disposable nappies for hospital / first few days as it’s just one headache too far for me if we end up having to stay in.

100% with you on the personal space thing. I’ve made myself unpopular with some of DH’s relatives by stopping them forcing unwanted hugs and kisses on DC.
I feel v strongly that it’s imperative that children are taught that it’s up to them to consent to being touched, hugged etc, even from their young age and I expect all family etc to adhere to that.

Deut28 · 03/01/2023 20:07

@LifeOfRiley1 No need to get formula etc in advance if you're planning to breastfeed. Hospital will have some available if you need it. Supermarkets stock premade ones. With my first DC we went through the classic 2nd night unsettled cluster feeding and I was so concerned until the visiting midwife arrived the next morning and reminded me that this was perfectly normal newborn behaviour and baby was feeding fine. I know if I'd had formula in the house I would have just caved and given that for the reassurance of knowing how much was going in, but it probably would have set back our breastfeeding journey.

^ yep I found it great and will be using from birth again. I recommend Cheeky Wipes, a Bambino Mio lockable bucket and their wraps. A good wetbag for out and about. Got it all off vinted for £35.

In terms of pads until my supply was established I leaked heavily and needed frequent pad changes so bought three packs of lanisoh resuable pads.

Flittingaboutagain · 03/01/2023 20:33

I also struggled to breastfeed and didn't have tongue tie picked up for weeks so this time I will know exactly how pain free it can be with a good latch! It was such a relief when we got it corrected and I could stop exclusive pumping. Still breastfeeding my first at 18m now.
