@DesertSnow we’ve already told close family/friends because I’m terrible at keeping a secret 🤣 No exciting reveals as it’s been a cautious “I’m only x weeks so it’s early!”

AnnieApple123 · 21/12/2022 17:25

@Havanalily1806 I actually haven’t been able to do BBT at all this time as, since DS, I’ve rarely been able to get through the night without getting up for a wee!

Just called Fetal Medicine Centre and they do indeed include amnio/CVS for free if needed. It’s also a great place to get those more invasive tests done as the skill and experience of the person doing them can reduce the risk and they have some very experienced consultants. So I’ve booked, which feels like a huge step. They only offer Harmony so that’s that decision made too. From what I recall, there really isn’t much difference in the different types. Last time we ended up choosing quite arbitrarily on the day.

blondebanana · 21/12/2022 17:35

@DesertSnow we're planning to tell my parents and sister on Christmas Day, only because they will absolutely know what's up when I refuse the red wine. I've got my parents a mug that says "promoted from dog grandparents to human grandparents" and my sister a cute tree decoration. Not telling anyone else yet because it's early days!

blondebanana · 21/12/2022 17:38

Can I ask anyone when the nausea is supposed to start? I'm 4+4 and at the mo I only have tender breasts and cramps. I have quite a phobia of vomiting so not looking forward to that. Im also supposed to be heading abroad for a trip with my in laws in 2 weeks...

Amme18 · 21/12/2022 17:39

@blondebanana around 6 weeks normally!

Havanalily1806 · 21/12/2022 17:40

@AnnieApple123 what is amino/CVS? Sorry I sound really clueless don't I 🙈

We're planning on an 8 week scan so I think we will wait and see how that goes which won't be for another 3 weeks, all being well, and then look to book in the NIPT.

@blondebanana we are holding off telling anyone until 12 weeks, my family has a lot of worries at the moment with a close family member recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, so we want to try and keep any worry away from them and hopefully this can just be positive news after 12 weeks that everyone so desperately needs. So I've stocked up on the "noseco" and no alcohol wines and gin (and bottles of the real stuff) plan is to transfer the fake stuff into the real bottles and hope no one realises I'm not merry 😂... we are hosting so I'll just make sure everyone's drinks are topped up and no one need try make their own 😂

AnnieApple123 · 21/12/2022 17:49

@ChloeN NIPT = non-invasive prenatal screening. It’s a blood test which can pick up tiny fragments of the baby’s DNA in your blood and screen them for abnormalities. It can also tell you the baby’s sex (although you can choose not to find out of course).

It’s a fairly new development as, until recently, the only way you could access the baby’s DNA was through an invasive test (either amnio or CVS) which comes with a small risk of miscarriage.

It’s the most accurate test there is which doesn’t carry any risks (although it’s still not 100%).

Amme18 · 21/12/2022 17:51

@Havanalily1806 sorry to hear about your family member, it’s an awful disease and tough on everybody. I wish I’d managed to keep my mouth shut and do an exciting reveal but I couldn’t 🤣 but mine was a similar reasoning to yours re nice news, we lost my mum in October and so it’s been something else to focus on for my dad, sister and grandparents ❤️ some nice, hopeful news.

blondebanana · 21/12/2022 17:56

@Havanalily1806 I'm so sorry to hear that you have a family member with stage 4 😔 that must be really tough especially around this time of year. Great idea re. transferring non alcoholic into alcoholic bottles! Perfect that you're hosting so you can fuss around everyone else and people shouldn't notice!

@Amme18 thank you!

marleyandme · 21/12/2022 18:19

Exciting hearing everyone's plans of telling family at Christmas! I'm 7 weeks and have just told parents and in laws so far but am tempted to tell my brother and his girlfriend on Christmas as we'll be spending it with them.
Have also stocked up on the non alcoholic drinks including some Schloer pink Fizz which I'm quite excited to try! Any other recommendations?

BusyBushBaby · 21/12/2022 18:21

Hi, I just typed out a long message but my phone ate it. Anyway if you don't want to read about pregnancy complications or loss you might want to skip past this post.

Had another scan today at 7+4. Baby 1 looks great, measuring 7+6, nice heartbeat etc. Baby 2 has grown a little and has a heartbeat but doesn't look good. He or she is measuring waaay behind and heartbeat is slow. The specialist nurse thinks it unlikely baby 2 will survive although "stranger things have happened".

Sorry for not replying individually to everyone - I can't keep up with the thread! Also I just wrote loads and lost it all! I'm going to take a step back for a bit as I fear my more wary approach to pregnancy doesn't fit in with the general tone of the thread. I might pop in from time to time and hope to jump back on board one the worst of the early pregnancy anxieties have passed.

BCxx · 21/12/2022 18:27

@BusyBushBaby aw sorry it wasn’t better news today, there is still some hope there though as it is so early. When will you have another scan now? Thinking of you and keeping everything crossed

MinnieFirstTimeMum · 21/12/2022 18:27

@BusyBushBaby sorry it wasn't the news you had 100% hoped for today. Keep hold of the hope though, fingers crossed for you x

MinnieFirstTimeMum · 21/12/2022 18:28

Anybody know when your uterus finishes expanding. These cramps are driving me mad, I have never used my hot water bottle so much 😂

BCxx · 21/12/2022 18:28

@Havanalily1806 I’ve bought in the non-alcoholic Gordon’s gin this week and poured it into an old bottle and got the eisberg rose to pour into an old rose bottle too for new year 😂 I’m pouring the drinks so if someone else wants gin I’m just going to have to swap the bottle in the cupboard and put something on mine so I know it’s mine 🙈 I don’t even think people would notice if they were still sober a few drinks in

Rowanandremy · 21/12/2022 18:29

@BusyBushBaby so sorry it wasn’t the news you were hoping for. Thinking of you

Amme18 · 21/12/2022 18:30

@BusyBushBaby What a worrying time for you, must be awfully mixed emotions too. I hope you don’t feel that you can’t be here and also be feeling anxious or worried - you can absolutely share your worries and fears but also understand if it doesn’t feel the right place for you if it won’t bring you comfort or support during this worrying time!

MinnieFirstTimeMum · 21/12/2022 18:30

@marleyandme it is hard isn't it. I wouldn't be telling my brother if we weren't with them Christmas Day and night. And I am the worst liar so I wouldn't get away with any of the tips people have given 😂

Jadeelx · 21/12/2022 18:34

@AnnieApple123 I just noticed you use the birth company, I use them too for my scans! I’m going tomorrow for an early one and was planning to ask about NIPT. Last time I did Panorama, she said it was better as they test for more but since last time the extra things they test isn’t as standard in the pricing, so it makes the panorama more expensive compared to harmony and prenatal.
Im planning on booking my NIPT for around 12/13th of Jan all being well tomorrow

AnnieApple123 · 21/12/2022 18:35

@BusyBushBaby So sorry to hear it wasn’t better news. I really hope things change for you and that everyone ends up pleasantly surprised. Please feel free to post here all you want and need. xxx

LS888 · 21/12/2022 18:42

@BusyBushBaby sorry to hear it wasn’t better news for you. Keep strong, thinking of you xx

Yes. They do a really nice series of pics and videos. They also told us very confidently that DS was a boy at the 12 week scan (which was actually at 13+2 and I was measuring 10 days ahead so it was really closer to 15 weeks).

I’ve booked Fetal Medicine Centre (which is downstairs in the same building as Birth Company) for NIPT this time though as, for the same price, they’ll include a free amnio or CVS if needed. So it’s felt like no contest really. I went there last time at 20 weeks and they were also good. They weren’t quite so generous with pics but that’s obviously not top priority.

BusyBushBaby · 21/12/2022 18:43

I'm actually pretty pleased with the outcome of the scan, obviously I wish things were looking better for baby 2 but I was very relieved to see baby 1 looking well.

CityKity · 21/12/2022 18:45

@BusyBushBaby I’m really sorry the scan wasn’t better news. Keeping everything crossed for you that baby 2 catches up. Your wary approach is still welcome here always if you need support. I’m terrified and just as cautious as you but my way of handling that is to head in sand until the 12 week scan. If it’s all going south I just don’t want to know right now especially over Christmas.

@Havanalily1806 @BCxx I did the non- alcoholic drink transfer into a “real” bottle when hosting a Christmas party and it worked an absolute treat! It’s so much easier when you’re hosting and in control.

@Havanalily1806 Im also waiting till 12 weeks to tell family but we’re doing Christmas at my sisters for the whole week so am really nervous of how to
dodge wine, champagne, smelly cheese, and salmon for that long. Im just hoping people are too wrapped up in their own worlds to notice, but my mum really picks up on my eating habits because I used to be such a fussy eater.

AnnieApple123 · 21/12/2022 18:48

@Havanalily1806 Sorry, I used to teach biology and sometimes forget not everyone knows this stuff. I should explain better.

Amnio and CVS are invasive tests where they basically stick a needle in you to get a sample of the amniotic fluid around the baby. This can tell you for pretty much certain whether there are any problems with the baby’s chromosomes. It includes a small risk of miscarriage so obviously isn’t something you want to do without good reason. It’s usually only done when there’s a strong suspicion something is amiss, like when screening tests come back with a high risk result.
