we have decided on the name Myrtle if we have a girl, i know its not everyones taste but i don't see the need for the nasty comments from DHs family and his work collegues.

the latest comment which quite upset me was 'i hope you have a boy for the babys sake'

what on earth makes people think they have the right to make such rude comments to the babys parents face? i don't think much of the names they chose for their children but i would never dream saying anything.

that's why you mustn't tell people your plans til after baby is born

scorpio1 · 30/01/2008 10:56

i know a Myrtle.

im not telling anyone in RL what im calling DD until she is born, as someone always has something bad to say.

its your choice, ignore them.

nickytwotimes · 30/01/2008 10:56

myrtle is lovely!

nickytwotimes · 30/01/2008 10:56

myrtle is lovely!

EEC · 30/01/2008 10:56

I think myrtle is a nice name if that helps. Agree that best not to tell people what you have decided until after the birth. Most people will not be so rude at that stage! (I hope).

Just try to ignore them. No name will be liked by everyone, that's why we all have different names!

platesmasher · 30/01/2008 10:59

there is character on harry potter called moaning myrtle. just so you know. but i think it's a sweet name.

Minkus · 30/01/2008 10:59

Oh dear frootloop what mean people. Fuck em. Try not to let it get to you, they are obviously just unimaginative narrow minded folk and being pregnant you deserve to be cossetted a little bit, they're just nasty.

(and if you have more children in the future, remember the cardinal rule; DON'T TELL ANYONE the names you've chosen unless you want opinions! )

Hecate · 30/01/2008 10:59

Ignore them. The only thing that matters is you like the name.

Minkus · 30/01/2008 11:00

Ooops cross posted with the entire world there!

fryalot · 30/01/2008 11:00

your baby, your choice.

Stuff 'em.

Bet they've all got kids called whatever the craze was in that year!

myrtle's a lovely name, take no notice

mamado · 30/01/2008 11:02

oh I feel for you. I think Myrtle is a very pretty and unusual name.

We had a similar situation with dd2, although we didn't tell anyone the name until after she was born. However, even then we only got negative comments, ranging from 'i suppose i'll have to get used to it' from my mum, and 'what is it again, its such a difficult name' from mil!!! In the end we decided to call dd2 by our second choice name, and give her the first choice name as a middle name. I know it was a cop out, and we're still upset about the comments, but we didn't want to saddle her with a name everyone hated...besides, she can choose later if she wants!

I'd say if you love it as a name, then stick to your guns

Slouchy · 30/01/2008 11:02

I like Myrtle. Be prepared for 'moaning myrtle' at school if the HP films/books are still popular.
Do stick to your guns though. You like it, she will suit it and that's all that matters.

(Anyone else do this at nickytwotimes posting her response (ahem) two times?

MrsDandOllie · 30/01/2008 11:02

Learnt my lesson last time about everyone chipping in with their opinions on your choices! This time I am keeping quiet until baby arrives!
Myrtle is cute btw!

MotherFunker · 30/01/2008 11:03

Nobody liked our son's name much, but I didn't give a hoot. We LOVED it and still do. And it suits him so well. Ignore people's comments.

(Agree that not telling anyone the baby's name until it's been born and named is a good idea. People are far less likely to say 'what a horrible name' once they know it's official).

Gosh yes EVERYONE is going to think of Moaning Myrtle who lives in a toilet

MrsDandOllie · 30/01/2008 11:03

I did wonder if Nickytwotimes was named that because she has a quirk of always posting twice lol

harleyd · 30/01/2008 11:05

reminds me of myrtle the turtle
but, hey, its your choice

pirategirl · 30/01/2008 11:05

I like that name, I know a Myrtle, yet now I am aware of the moaning reference in the harry Potter books, I would consider it, if it were me, and if it would cause any teasing for that matter.

I was teased for my name, becuase of it being on an advert, (in 70's) and it really stuck in my head.
