we have decided on the name Myrtle if we have a girl, i know its not everyones taste but i don't see the need for the nasty comments from DHs family and his work collegues.

the latest comment which quite upset me was 'i hope you have a boy for the babys sake'

what on earth makes people think they have the right to make such rude comments to the babys parents face? i don't think much of the names they chose for their children but i would never dream saying anything.

the worst playground taunts i can think of is myrtle the turtle and moaning myrtle.

i don't think there is a name on the planet that children couldn't turn into a taunt.

I foolishly told someone (just one person) what I wanted to call dd2 before she was born. She laughed and said it was 'a hideous name', and I just couldn't do it (even though I still love the name).

pirategirl · 30/01/2008 11:16

what was it elbell?

MamaG · 30/01/2008 11:18

If I ever have another baby I'll tell MIL that I'm going to call it Turniphead. Then, when its called Amelia or Harry, she won'g moan

scorpio1 · 30/01/2008 11:18

we are telling everyone dd is going to be called Bob

Oliveoil · 30/01/2008 11:18

I thought immediately of HP and moaning myrtle

but tbh, I was teased about my name at school and it is bog standard

children will make up ANYTHING

and also, who is to say that there will not be a film made with a character called Loopy Lilly or Evil Evie etc etc in the next few years

then all the Lillys and Evies in Dd1's school will be well and truly f@@ked won't they?

if you like a name, use it imo

KnitterInTheNW · 30/01/2008 11:19

There was a Myrtle in the 'art class' that the little girl I looked after in my last nanny job went to. She was about 2 1/2 at the time, and was absoloutely convinced that her friend's name was 'Purple'. Was very cute, and Myrtle was lovely too. I like it.

pirategirl · 30/01/2008 11:19

lol

i wanted to call my baby if a boy, Jude. Yet my ex dh was german and said it translated to jew. So that was that then. Names are so evocative.

Ellbell · 30/01/2008 11:20

It was Meriel, which is a lovely name. (I think there is a MNer who has one...)

(Don't regret not calling dd2 it now, as she very much is what we eventually called her, iykwim, but am still annoyed that I allowed myself to be swayed by one person's opinion.)

pirategirl · 30/01/2008 11:20

Thats a great name, yes.!

MamaG · 30/01/2008 11:22

DS insisted that a boy at nursery was called Poppy. He called him it at EVERY opportunity. He is really called Bobby

pirategirl · 30/01/2008 11:23

my dd has an unusual name, well there aren't any I know of. she is 5, BUT there is now a well known singer with the samenmae, 5 yrs later, so i guess there will be more of them.

drats!! just goes to show like Mamado said, and slouchy, you just never know.

Blu · 30/01/2008 11:23

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
discussing baby names, or telling people the sex of your baby before birth is a recipe for all sorts of unwanted interference.

I kept totally shtum about DS, i have no idea what people think of hs name and don't care. Once a baby is born, they keep thier opinios to themselves - or just get used to it v quickly, anyway.

Names become like wallpaper once you are used to them - they stop being an issue, whatever the name is.

pirategirl · 30/01/2008 11:23

my dd insisted the little girl in her class called melissa was a boy, becuase she was tall and had short hair.!

macaco · 30/01/2008 11:25

Don't tell anyone what you're planning before you have the baby unless you want opinions as they will give them anyway.

VictorianSqualor · 30/01/2008 11:30

I'll be honest, I thnk the name Myrtle is horrible, but it's none of my business, it's not my baby and I don;t have any say, you may not like the names mine have or the ones I've chosen for my current bump, BUT as everyone else has said, don't tell people if you don't want people to slag it, there will always be someone who doesn't like it.

arfishy · 30/01/2008 11:31

I like it. In fact,I like it enough to have stashed it away for future use .

Ignore them all. Once she's born then it will seem like she's always been a Myrtle.

mamado · 30/01/2008 11:32

you could always pretend to use one of those names from Georgia, USA which were linked to the other day (such as Chlorine ) and then when you eventually use Myrtle they'll all think its lovely and very normal!

Twiglett · 30/01/2008 11:32

don't tell

have to agree that first thought is moaning myrtle

but if you like it you're the ones who live with it

finallypregnant · 30/01/2008 11:33

I agree exactly with VictorainSqualor above!

Saturn74 · 30/01/2008 11:37

I think if you choose a name that is no longer in regular use, you're going to have to get used to the fact that it may be a talking point.

And people will express opinions.

If you're happy with it, you're just going to have to learn to ignore the less than flattering comments.

(I think it's a lovely name, btw - my car is called Myrtle!)

sparkybabe · 30/01/2008 11:38

I think Myrtle is lovely and unusual and def. better than being another Ellie (smellie ellie?) or jessica fgs.
Its a shrub I think? Scented flowers?

purpleduck · 30/01/2008 11:40

I instantly think moaning myrtle

and very old ladies

BUT, names always sound so flat until there is a person attached to them
you have to do what you like

however.....

Many people (you said) have had a negative response - that is what your dd may have to put up with
Just a thought...

snowleopard · 30/01/2008 11:45

It's a beautiful name and a lovely flower Even Moaning Myrtle is pretty cool, I like her.

Ignore them. In fact I think a few people raising eyebrows at your name choice is a good thing, in general.

I partly hoped DS would be a girl because the girl's name we had in mind really got my mum's back up
