we have decided on the name Myrtle if we have a girl, i know its not everyones taste but i don't see the need for the nasty comments from DHs family and his work collegues.

the latest comment which quite upset me was 'i hope you have a boy for the babys sake'

what on earth makes people think they have the right to make such rude comments to the babys parents face? i don't think much of the names they chose for their children but i would never dream saying anything.

I like the name Myrtle (which rhymes with Turtle for me).

We didn't tell people our dds' names til they were born, then people tended to say "oh how lovely" but I know perfectly well some people are thinking "WTF are they saddling their child with that name for?" But at least they don't say it to our faces.

turtle23 · 30/01/2008 19:40

Lovely name. Both sets of parents hate our name too, and it is beginning to become a bit of a joke that every time we pick up the phone, it's "How about Max?" rather than hello. Do any of you think that calling him Pascal is "going to ruin the life of a small boy?"

MAMAZON · 30/01/2008 19:41

i really wanted Elize for DD but thought it was too unusual for my family.
the few names we did mention out loud always resulted in some remark or other so when we finally decided on what we WERE having we just didn't tell anyone.

my DD's name really suits her now but i do wish i had just ignored everyone else and gone with what I wanted.

turtle23 · 30/01/2008 19:42

Oooh...just read that last post. I didn't think about it, but unless you have the same name as me (it is really turtle) myrtle is a lovely name.

whomovedmychocolate · 30/01/2008 19:44

Not helpful MildManneredJanitor OP needs reassurance. There are a lot of Myra's in the world.

That's like saying everyone called Ian is a mass murderer when regular Eastenders viewers know he's a twonk! (NB I haven't seen eastenders for three years, he may well have changed to be an axe murderer).

Haven't read whole thing but agree with MildManner's original post. If you don't tell anyone at all what you are thinking of then just present the baby and say 'This is X' - people wouldn't dare say anything!

I like Seth for a boy next time but everyone is V rude about it saying it is an old man's name. I love it !!!

gr1973 · 30/01/2008 21:04

I like Myrtle - its kind of cute. I also like Seth, Wilkie - I can imagine people are very rude about it though, in the same way they were rude about other 'old fashioned' names that are now exceptionally popular!

Octothechildherder · 30/01/2008 21:07

Myrtle is a brilliant name.

I have a Stan, Ted and Ernie

Have various comments re their names - I just say something like 'ooh it could be really boring like Jack or Harry'

In fact Ernie is really

ERNIE JACK FLASH FINN

Octothechildherder · 30/01/2008 21:08

jeez mildmanneredjanitor

Sycamoretree · 30/01/2008 21:09

Myrtle is adorable - really lovely and unusual, so ignore them. BUT, heed advice from earlier in the thread - NEVER tell anyone until the babe is born - SO much harder for people to be rude when faced with adorable little bundle. We kept all of ours to ourselves having let one idea pop out, only to be utterly shot down in flames by my mum and sister.

Sycamoretree · 30/01/2008 21:12

I disagree that Harry Potter is a concern - by the time you LO is in school HP will be SOOOO last decade. And who cares anyway? There's a reason to chose against every single name on the planet if you look for it - our DS shares the same name as a very ridiculous childrens TV character FGS! Do I care, no I blardy well do not! Good luck to you, and to myrtle (the turtle - just kidding!)

Octothechildherder · 30/01/2008 21:14

sycamore - people so do not forget! The next time someone mentions the fastest milman in the west, I am going to fucking scream! Good thing is I am too young to remember it!

My mum was the worst person tbh

gr1973 · 30/01/2008 21:18

It doesn't matter what you call your child - there is always a risk that the next big movie/book/tv character whatever will change people's opinion of it. I bet everyone who called their child Oscar a couple of years ago was THRILLED when they named a baby Oscar in Eastenders. And lots of unusual/slightly different names go on to be poular later. I dont remember a Poppy or Harry or Emily or Grace when I was growing up and now there are plenty of them.

At least its a proper name which is spelt properly. (I'm obsessed with a hatred for badly spelt or made up names).

Sycamoretree · 30/01/2008 21:18

Ah, Octo - am sorry for your little Ernie - I think it's a rockin' cool name and last time I heard that song was in 1979 (i was 5) and I promise brownie's honour it didn't remotely pop into my head when I read your LO's name! BTW - Stan was the name we loved for our DS that my family shot down

gr1973 · 30/01/2008 21:19

Obviously I meant popular and not poular before I went on my spelling rant

Don't want to hijack, but I worked with a Myra for five years, and really didn't like her - she was utterly horrible and a bully.
But it never once occured to me that she had the same name as Myra Hindley.
Shorten it if you want, but I like Myrtle, and Ernie and Ted and Seth, and Oscar, and Freya, and in fact almost every name posted on here.
Some people are always looking for reasons to dislike a name (DH) and won't like whatever you choose.
I have a friend who chose a CRAZY name for her baby, and literally everyone thinks it's daft, but no one would ever say that to her - and bizarrely, it actually suits her DC.

Fennel · 31/01/2008 10:09

I agree that Myrtle-in-Harry-Potter will be old news in a few years. My dd3 is called the same name as an actress who was well known about 4 years ago, when dd3 was on the way, and people said "but what about the (not desperately popular) actress?" But I guessed that the actress might be passing her fame peak and since then she's dropped out of the media almost completely.

My nephew is Seth, in fact I know rather a lot of Seths in the 2 and under age group. It seems to me it's getting very popular.

sparkybabe · 31/01/2008 10:23

I love Seth. I have a friend who was at another who called her son Wyatt ('OOOO what a terrible name!') but called her own son a boring Andrew.

seaside72 · 31/01/2008 10:24

Have not read whole thread only OP but just wanted to say - I love Myrtle - was on our "girls" list for sure ( but from the Wickerman - a cult 70's film ) We are having a lot of neg comments about the name we have chosen for our baby boy born last week - Cassius - lots of people including my father expressed distaste and some have even said "your're not seriously going to call him that?!" grrr - the more they say that the more stubborn it makes us!! We love it!!

Stick to your guns - it is your baby

ChinaSurprise · 31/01/2008 10:57

seaside - I love Cassius but DH would not have it. Turns out is probably a girl anyway, but stick to your guns!
I can't believe how effing rude some people are!

bitofadramaqueen · 31/01/2008 12:57

ChinaSurprise - my DH has yet to come up with a single name but finds a reason to hate ANYTHING I come up with!! We'd like something fairly traditional, but not super popular but anything I suggest that's not boring is poo poo'd straight away.
