we have decided on the name Myrtle if we have a girl, i know its not everyones taste but i don't see the need for the nasty comments from DHs family and his work collegues.

the latest comment which quite upset me was 'i hope you have a boy for the babys sake'

what on earth makes people think they have the right to make such rude comments to the babys parents face? i don't think much of the names they chose for their children but i would never dream saying anything.

Ignore them - who cares what they think - it is the name you like and want to give your baby. People always react to different names. My DN is called Hunter and everyone had something to say about that, but now agree that he really suits his name and that actually it is a really nice name! Sometimes names just need to grow on people!

TheHonEnid · 30/01/2008 13:13

ignore them

I think myrtle is Not Nice but I expect it would grown on me

3andnomore · 30/01/2008 13:14

Oh Myrtle is a real cute name....as others said, don't let people upset you...or just take the piss and choose something truely awful and weird to tell people, for the shock factor, and then the comments won't annoy you....but obviously call your child the name you want, in this case Myrtle.

TheHonEnid · 30/01/2008 13:16

Myrtle the Turtle

willdaisymummy · 30/01/2008 13:16

Myrtle is really, really nice. I know what it's like. We wanted Stanley if DD was a boy, this was often met with lots of strange looks and silence.

nailpolish · 30/01/2008 13:17

n o one likes the name we chose for dd1

they all say "oh its a bit of a mouthful"

"oh fuck off" i want to say. its a gorgeous name and dd1 suits it to a tee. she really really does.

the also attempt to shorten it which dd1 (5) HATES

she corrects people every single time. i am so proud

feedmenow · 30/01/2008 13:18

Myrtle is really lovely. I would have loved to name dd Mildred but dp wouldn't let me!

Did not read all other replies but my advice would be to tell anyone who comments in a negative way to stuff it! None of their business. Up to you and your dh. End of.

nailpolish · 30/01/2008 13:20

VictorianSqualor · 30/01/2008 13:22

Lol, Myrtle does rhyme with Turtle, but I had a friend called Anna Spanner at school so even the most normal name gets the piss taken out of it.
(I was Lorayn the Pain)

nailpolish · 30/01/2008 13:22

its our different accents i suppose

nailpolish · 30/01/2008 13:22

i say them different! but then i ahve a broad scots accent

nailpolish · 30/01/2008 13:23

i say anna and spanner COMPLETELY different!

belgo · 30/01/2008 13:23

I didn't think of moaning Myrtle.

Myrtle may not be to everyone's taste, but at least it's not a silly or made up name.

Stick with it if you want it.

vickyy · 30/01/2008 13:49

I think it's a really sweet name. We started telling people the names we were considering and I really wish we'd kept quiet, various family members have already told us they hate some of the ones we like!

BroccoliSpears · 30/01/2008 14:24

I like everyone's confidence that as long as you don't tell people what you're calling your baby before it's born you will avoid rude comments.

We didn't tell anyone and were utterly stunned by the rudeness and horrid comments from people who didn't like our choice, and this was after our daughter had been born. It's not as though we were going to change it (though some members of the family seriously asked us to). A year and a half later I have finally had to be quite stern with people and say that they can hate my daughter's name all they like, but it's not going to change and I had to insist they stop making comments in front of her, because she's practically at an age to understand what they are saying.

Myrtle is a gorgeous name.

Call your baby what you like. You can't possibly please everyone, and you really shouldn't waste energy trying to please people who are rude.

NKF · 30/01/2008 14:26

Once the baby is born and named, nobody says a thing. That's why it's best to keep it secret. Try not to worry.

VictorianSqualor · 30/01/2008 14:27

The only peopel that know what we are going to call our baby are on MN.
Everyone else can find out when it's born.
If they want to complain about it then they can fark orf.
