NC for this (long time poster).

My head is in a complete spin. I'll be 48 next month and have a 6 y/o I gave birth to when I was 41. It took seven years and two miscarriages to produce our dear child. I so thought I was done.

No, I haven't used contraception or even kept up with avoiding sex in mid-cycle. Yes, I'm an idiot. But I so thought that was all over....

We are so not up for this. No way. Looking at my options.

Holy fuck, really? Thanks for letting me rant, I cannot believe this.

It’s really inappropriate to piggyback on someone else’s thread about such a sensitive topic. I’ve reported your post.

There are much kinder ways to speak to people you know .

@39firstpregnancy you can ask mn to remove the posts and you can start your own thread . Sorry about the rude response from others

I had a scare earlier this year at the age of 45, after struggling with fertility for years and years. In my case it was a cruel perimenopausal trick, but shocking to even consider pregnancy at my age and stage in life.

Good luck with whatever happens. I'm sure this is a lot to take in ❤️

Taa everyone, I've been reading through this thread again. Have hit a slump today. Not about the decision, but about what must come next.

I think I agree with all who've said it's better to intervene than wait. I just hate the thought of having to make all those phone calls, turn up at the doctors, possibly go for an ultrasound since I'm unsure of dates, all of it.

Then again, I'm already going half-mad waiting for a bleed than might or might not happen.

Thx again xx

Hope you're ok, no use pretending that this next bit will be anything other than shit but you'll get through it and you're not alone. ❤️

My mum got pregnant at 48 I think and it did end in miscarriage but she's now 50 nearly 51 and still having regular periods etc and is no where near menopausal yet. I think her own mum, my grandma had her last at 51.
My mum was like you. Shocked, worried and in disbelief and when it was over she was actually really distressed and upset by it so please be kind to yourself.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 01/11/2022 12:09

This happened to my SIL at 50. She thought she was menopausal so it came as a 🤯. By the time she knew she was pregnant she was already 25 weeks.

She went on to have a healthy baby, who is now a lovely little 6 year old. She can't imagine not having him in her life.

Good luck!

CristinaNov182 · 01/11/2022 12:19

@ItsRainingTacos79 wow, this is the first time I’ve heard of a natural pregnancy at 50!

Makes me a bit scared tbh, with my mum and her mum getting pregnant at 45, I was thinking after 45 I’ll be in the clear, not as a given but as a probability.

I’m 42 now, pregnant with 2nd child and we don’t want any more. But who knows, that might change.

HoarHouse · 01/11/2022 14:52

Geriatric pregnancy 😂 I can't believe they call it that.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 01/11/2022 19:25

@CristinaNov182 it's an extreme case at 50 for sure. SIL has children in their 30s and now a 6 year old too

It's not that uncommon to fall pregnant in mid to late 40s to be honest. A know 3 women who've had babies naturally at that age, and they all thought they were menopausal.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 01/11/2022 19:27

My pregnancy was written as 'geriatric' in my hospital notes - I was 37 😅

technically I was a geriatric primagravida at 30 lol.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/11/2022 21:43

I was zimmer framed at 43

but meant I was consultant led as old but also meant I had scans every 3w which was lovely and reassuring

OldFan · 02/11/2022 00:21

Geriatric pregnancy 😂 I can't believe they call it that.

When my mum was pregnant with me in 1976/77, her being pregnant at 30 was considered geriatric. Grin

HoarHouse · 02/11/2022 07:04

That's horrible, I had my second baby when I was 40 and I would've been horrified if I saw that on my notes, especially because my husband's 12 years younger than me.

kateandme · 02/11/2022 11:21

I’m sorry op.
have you real life support?
it doesn’t matter how sure you are of your decision it’s still fucking hard thing to do and go through.
make sure you ask of support through your gp too.
keep talking.talk talk talk and more talk.

Update: I have just started to bleed. It's light but it looks like I'm getting my wish.

Oh thank you Mother Nature!! I thought you'd screwed me over but you took one for the team in the end.

Thank you to everyone on the thread who said such supportive things. Funnily enough, there's a new thread where the OP asks if people would continue a surprise pregnancy when they were 49. A surprising number of people are saying yes. Horses for courses I guess but WOW I AM SO RELIEVED.

hope this turns out the way you want op, must be so stressful.

Did you manage to book an appointment with the GP just in case? I hope that this is the start of a mc for you OP and MN is taking its course.

I had light bleeds when I was pregnant (albeit I was quite a bit younger) but the pregnancy progressed as normal.

How do you feel in general - any pain/cramping? Keep us updated x

Goodgreiftroolyrooly · 07/11/2022 05:07

Sorry I should've mentioned- yes, I've a GP appointment on Friday, which was the soonest I could see our family GP whom I trust.

I'll keep the appointment regardless. Apart from all else, I want to ask him what to do about contraception for the next couple of years. As hugely unlikely as it is, I'm proof it can happen and I never want to see those 2 lines again.

Bleeding still not heavy, still got sore boobs, mild cramping.

My head is all over the place to be honest, thx again for your help all X

I completely forgot that some women bleed in early pregnancy and all turns out to be fine. To me, in my experience, blood means it's over.

That took the wind out of my sails a tad.

ArabellaScott · 07/11/2022 08:46

Sending good thoughts to you, OP.

mauvish · 07/11/2022 09:45

Yes, you must get it checked, don't rely on bleeding meaning "it's all over". Perhaps you could do another pregnancy test on the morning of your GP appointment (unless things have become very clear at thst point!) to check the situation. Even if it were negative by then I'd want to scan you.

My DD bled almost every day between weeks 4 and 11 of her pregnancy. My granddaughter - the end result of that pregnancy - is a healthy toddler now.

I think about 50% of women who bleed in early pregnancy settle down and the pregnancy continues.

jennakong · 07/11/2022 10:07

There is sometimes a thing called implantation bleeding which might be mistaken for a light period.

I had cramping and clamminess and headaches in the first couple of weeks of pregnancy, I hope you get your wish OP, would a pregnancy test done now help indicate if your hormone levels are falling off?

BloodAndFire · 07/11/2022 11:49

Pregnancy tests won't be negative that quickly. I still tested positive a couple of weeks after I'd definitely had a complete miscarriage.

Goodgreiftroolyrooly · 08/11/2022 05:21

Warning- a tad graphic

Update- I did another FR test this morning, which had an absolute squinter of a 2nd line. Won't bother posting it.

Took DS to a Paediatrician appointment at midday, and as we were leaving I felt a desperate need for the bathroom. I left DS6 in the kids room watching Bluey and asked another Mum "Could you watch him for me while I nip to the bathroom?" (I'd normally NEVER leave him where I couldn't see him, but this was urgent). She said yes yes, go.

I got there just in time, as soon as I bent to sit on the toilet I felt something burst and a big gush of blood came out. I used up most of a toilet roll cleaning it up.

Had a very shaky moment, shoved a load of toilet paper between my legs, then managed to retrieve DS, pay the bill and get home.

Now it's just normal period bleeding. But I've had 2 m/c before and know from experience there could be a lot more to come. Will be staying very close to the bathroom this evening.

Sorry for all the detail, my head is spinning again. Thanks again all X

Geriatric pregnancy 😂 I can't believe they call it that.

Just reading back through the thread

@HoarHouse Granted I was 41 when given this label, but there is nothing like being called a Geriatric by a doctor who is 76. I felt like saying "Ha! You can only wish you were 41, you old bastard".
