@B1993 I work Mon-Weds too and I did try and move the appt but she said I'd have to wait ages if I gave that one up. The type of work I do means if I don't block the whole day out, I won't be able to guarantee I can make the appt. I think I am going to have to do as you say and just tell my boss and ask him not to tell others yet. He has to legally give me the time off for the appt then doesn't he. It is him I am most scared of telling though !

We are going to tell our little boy once we know the gender mid-Jan.

Has anyone considered paying for one of those "sneak peek" gender kits online?

B1993 · 25/11/2022 20:20

@BobbySD345, yes you’re legally entitled to paid time off for any maternity appointments. What makes you worried about telling him specifically? (Don’t feel like you need to answer that if you’d prefer not to say).

I did the Sneak Peek around six weeks ago now as I was desperate to know. I got the boy result which is what I was expecting, but I’m fairly certain that my result would have come back as a boy even with a girl as the test is incredibly difficult to carry out and I 100% contaminated my results. If I were you, I’d wait another 4 weeks and have an early gender scan. The Sneak peek costs more, is easily contaminated (so isn’t as reliable as they claim) and with a scan you get the reassurance of seeing baby. Obviously that’s just my opinion but definitely wish I’d paid more attention to the criticism it gets online!

MrsP4 · 25/11/2022 20:30

Hi, how is everyone doing? I'm 13 weeks tomorrow got my scan on Monday, been suffering this week with terrible back ache feel about 70! 🙈 can't wait to see baby on Monday hoping everything's ok! Anyone else got a scan next week? X

BobbySD345 · 25/11/2022 20:40

@B1993 I'll have to do some research into the sneak peek test then ! Sounds like I would be better off waiting for a gender scan.

There is only two of us in the team and it will therefore impact the department hugely when I go. I ended up being off for 14 months last time as it coincided with COVID and I was furloughed. They didn't get anyone in temporarily and boy have I heard a lot about the inconvenience my maternity leave caused 🤣

Hopeful1992 · 25/11/2022 20:41

Wondering if anybody else has had this… I went for my first midwife appt today and they asked what date the 1st day of my last period was. I gave it them and explained I have PCOS so irregular cycles, and that I actually ovulated about 6 weeks after my period rather than the average 2. I know the exact date I ovulated making me 8 weeks 2 days, but they’ve put me down as 12 weeks pregnant and said they will ask the hospital to book me in for a 12 weeks scan asap. They also booked me 16 week midwife appt for in 4 weeks time (I’ll be 12 weeks then)
I know 100% I’m not 12 weeks so I’m presuming when the dating scan is done and they realise this I’ll be offered another for the actual 12 week mark?
I know why the use the first day of your last period but I thought they would take into consideration any longer cycles etc

B1993 · 25/11/2022 21:21

@MrsP4, I had mine today and they dated me at 12+6 so we could potentially be DD twins! Good look with your scan on Monday - the wait is always the worse part!

@BobbySD345, yes - definitely look into it. That’s obviously just my take on it but I wouldn’t recommend it from my personal experience. I had a very positive experience with my DS’ early gender scan, on the other hand.

Hopefully they’ll do things differently this time around then, knowing what issues it caused for the team with your last mat leave. How possible would it be for them to hire mat cover and for you to train them up before you leave?

@Hopeful1992, as a rule of thumb, they do tend to use your last period date and date from there (unless you’ve had an early scan and then they might go from those dates and adjust at 12 weeks). In terms of the dating scan, it can be done from 8-14 weeks so I doubt they’d offer a second one. Once they’ve dated you, that due date will be unlikely to change and they base future scans and appointments based from that and not your period dates.

BobbySD345 · 25/11/2022 21:31

I had a similar situation with this as my cycles are irregular. This time round she took the 1st date of my last period and came to an EDD of 21/6 but also on my notes is an EDD of 25/6 based on an early scan at around 6 weeks. The midwife that said 21/6 based off last period said it will all be adjusted at 12 week dating scan.

Interestingly enough though, in my first pregnancy I had a similar situation where on my dates based on cycle length etc via my app, I was about a week ahead. At the dating scan, the sonographer was impatient and I could tell in the end she just measured what she could to get me out of the room because of how the baby was lying. My due date was pushed back by around 12 days. I gave birth at 37 + 3...which on my dates I would have been more like 39 weeks which seems more realistic ! Who knows 🤷‍♀️ They do say get the bags packed and car seat in by 37 weeks but I definitely didn't feel "ready" because of how they dated me ! I had been logging 2 days of what I thought were braxton hicks.

BobbySD345 · 25/11/2022 21:32

Sorry @Hopeful1992 I meant to tag you x

Algor1thm · 25/11/2022 21:47

In my experience, scan dates tend to be fairly inaccurate, especially if you know exactly when you ovulated. With both of my pregnancies I've known when I ovulated, and I've been dated a week ahead with both (6 days with my first and 7 with my this one). I make tall/long babies... my husband and I are both very tall and my oldest was born 98th centile for length. I'm 100% sure this is why I measure so far ahead even though the dates can't possibly work out. With this baby it would be an immaculate conception 😅 They insist all babies grow at the same rate in the first trimester down to the millimetre... I don't buy it.

The problem only comes at the end of the pregnancy when you have them pressuring you for an induction when they say you're much further past your due date than you know you are. First time round I had to really stand my ground and insist that their due date can't possibly be accurate, and I'm going by my own due date when decision making. It's not fun though!

Marmiteontoastyum · 25/11/2022 21:57

Thanks girls re. when to tell. Helpful to hear all your thinking on it and to know that others get it.

I’ve got my 12 week scan next Thursday. Ours is an IVF baby, we were measuring a day behind at 6 weeks and 2 days ahead at 9 weeks so I do think the days can be out for those finding the same.

Also with DD who was naturally conceived but I was certain of the dates we measured 6 days behind all the way through. Yet she was 9lb at birth so wasn’t exactly small! I think some of these dating measurements aren’t entirely accurate

MrsP4 · 25/11/2022 22:17

@B1993 ahh that's lovely, yes due date twins that would be good! Was this your first scan or did you have an early private one? X

Hopeful1992 · 25/11/2022 22:57

@B1993 thank you that’s really helpful, I thought that the 12 week scan was to check for any abnormalities etc so I presumed if they scanned me and saw I was only say 9 weeks, that they would bring me back in at 12. I have a private scan tomorrow so hopefully that will give me confirmation of how far along I am ☺️

Hopeful1992 · 25/11/2022 22:59

Thank you ☺️ This was my concern I didn’t want to be pushed into things with them putting me down as 12 weeks when I know for a fact I’m only 8. I wish I was 12 😂

B1993 · 26/11/2022 06:21

@MrsP4, I've been given two scans via EPAU after a few instances of spotting (one bright red and another few occasions of lighter red). I suppose I've been lucky to have those but would have preferred not to have any bleeding at all! 🙈

Now we're 13 weeks, does this mean we're finally into the second trimester?! I genuinely cannot remember from when I had my first 😅

B1993 · 26/11/2022 06:34

The 12 week scan is to date the pregnancy, check for twins and for nuchal translucency measurement, @Hopeful1992. The 20 week scan is the abnormalities scan where they take measurements of all of baby's body parts and to check there's no obvious conditions. I personally wouldn't worry about it being that bit earlier since the can date the pregancy at that point. I'm not sure if they'll do the nuchal measurement before 10 weeks though, if you do opt to have that.

I'd definitely reach out to your midwife/triage department after your private scan and confirm what they've dated you at to see if that makes a difference.

@Algor1thm, I have been very certain of my dates all the way through this pregnancy as I tracked ovulation with BBT. The two early scans I had both dates me a week behind this and the 12 week scan 4 days in front. I know I implanted fairly early after getting a positive tests at 8DPO so wonder if this could be why I'm now measuring ahead? 🤔 My son was/is tiny, so I know my issue isn't making big babies. 🤣

If you know your dates I would stick with them mentally. You know you can't be a week behind because you'd have tested positive way before you implanted so it doesn't make sense 🙈 The NHS will always go with their own date but I find it helpful to keep my date in mind.

Yes at 13 weeks we're finally in the glorious 2nd trimester 🥳

MrsP4 · 26/11/2022 07:59

@B1993 Ahh interesting because I've just read your other posts my private scan I had sue measure me a week behind but I know when I ovulated too so wondered what happened with your dates, so that's good to know they measured you 4 days ahead, the lady that scanned me at my private one said it's hard to date so early on that's why they do it at 12 weeks so I'm interested to see what they say on Monday x

B1993 · 26/11/2022 08:02

@Algor1thm, as of yesterday, they've now dated me as 5 days ahead 😂 Based on ovulation I'm 12+3 but the scan dates put me at 13weeks today. My DS arrived 5 days early based on 12w scan dates so I'll stick to theirs since it won't make too much different anyway (plus, it's nice being a bit further along 🤣).

B1993 · 26/11/2022 08:07

@MrsP4, they've consistently told me that, due to the nature of scanning and dealing with such precise measurements, the dates could actually be -/+ 5 days anyway. I was so relieved yesterday that baby caught up, I told the sonographer about measuring behind even though I knew it wasn't possible. She asked if my new dates seem better so I guess they do expect there to be some discrepancy 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hlc86 · 26/11/2022 09:48

Don't get me started on scan measurements, with my daughter I had to have scans every 2 weeks cause they said she was small and I wasn't gaining weight, so she was at 6lb for 2 weeks then on my last scan they said "oh wow she has grown and now weighs 9lb" I'm like but she can't have cause I haven't gained or lost weight?.. Any sure enough she was born a week later weighing 6lb 🤔😂

theblueflowers · 26/11/2022 10:53

@Hopeful1992 I'm in the exact same position as you- PCOS with long cycles. I tracked so knew exactly when I ovulated and it was over two weeks later than 'normal' cycles. As expected they just went off my LMP which I get, but it's a little frustrating when I know my own body and my cycles! I've also had two early scans which fit with my dates.

They just said that if I am before 10 weeks at the '12 week' scan, they will just ask me to come back for another- it happens all the time apparently. I did get a choice of when I could have this scan, so I'll be just shy of 12 weeks, but 14 weeks according to their dates. It's a bit annoying but hopefully will all be rectified at that scan! I will then have to change my 16 week appointment date too.

Hopeful1992 · 26/11/2022 11:56

Thanks everyone for your advice! Really helpful! I went for my private scan today and measured exactly 8 weeks 1 day and baby had a strong heartbeat. So reassuring and good to know I was right about how far gone I was so I can let the midwives know now 😄❤️

I have developed a cold yesterday. Trying to ride it out with just honey and lemon and Vicks.
It sucks!

B1993 · 26/11/2022 12:06

@Hopeful1992, lovely scan, congratulations! 😍🎉
