Hi ladies. So I went for my private early scan on Saturday and we got quite the shock......
TWINS! Two healthy heartbeats were seen, but they were dated 6+5 when I was 8+1 based off my LMP. Sonographer said I must have ovulated late which makes sense as this pregnancy was a surprise, I'm usually so regular so we were obviously caught out by me ovulating late.
No bloody wonder I feel as sick as a dog! The first thing I said to my husband after gasping was "I TOLD YOU!" I did have a suspicion purely because I feel so so tired and nauseous. A lot worse than I did with my son and daughter.
It's finally sinking in now and we told the kids and our parents as I feel too ill to hide it from them. I'm waiting for my booking in appointment and I'm not sure if I'll get a scan earlier than 12 weeks or just more regular scans after that one. Anybody else got twins?! I'm nervous as I feel like it's twice the anxiety...I just really hope I can carry them both ok xx

Oh wow! Congratulations!

Franklin321 · 02/08/2022 16:57

@3isthemagicnumb3r wow! Congratulations! My husband thinks we’re having twins but I’m doubtful 😅

hol92 · 02/08/2022 17:13

@3isthemagicnumb3r that’s brilliant congratulations! 😃😃 do you have twins in the family? :) also did you have any suspicious, glad they both have nice healthy heartbeats and what a lovely surprise 🥰 xx

Can I ask a question about booking in with a midwife?

it looks like I can phone my gp and they will book me in or I can self-refer. But in my area there are 3 hospitals that I could give birth in. It looks like I need to pick the hospital when I book in. But I don’t know which hospital to book until I have my first midwife appointment. Also I’m guessing I need to pick the hospital so they know where to send me for my 12 week scan?

does anyone have any advice as this is my first pregnancy so no idea what I’m doing?

JB2021 · 02/08/2022 17:23

My booking appointment is this week (8weeks +3days). Heard from a friend that midwife then sends book of info off having got all info from me and then will get given scan date. Really want scan ASAP and ideally before 11 weeks —NHS says 10 to 14 weeks so chances are slim

I had a choice of three hospital's and it's my first too I just googled them to see any reviews, the closest one had good reviews so I went with that. I think you can change hospital's if you change your mind later on (going on the question's I was asked on the referral form)

JB2021 · 02/08/2022 17:31

I also have 2 hospitals and a birthing centre. Also my first. This hasn't been mentioned yet. Wonder if midwife will say on Friday although March still seems a long way off!

ktmtb · 02/08/2022 17:35

@3isthemagicnumb3r congratulations! So exciting isn’t it?! I also found out I’m having twins on Sunday, so completely understand your extra worry. Trying to remain positive and counting down until 12 weeks to get a second scan

havanamama · 02/08/2022 17:44

Hey! I was posting in the 1st thread but left it as I found that too many people were mentioning miscarriage etc and it was not good for my mental health.

now I’m 8+4 weeks , have had 1st ultrasound at 7+5, baby was measuring 7+4 and has a strong heart beat ☺️
got my 12 week scan and consultant phone call in 3 weeks

3isthemagicnumb3r · 02/08/2022 17:45

Thank you everyone! My grandad had two sets of twin brothers, but it seemed to skip a couple of generations. Congrats @ktmtb glad I have a twin buddy haha, have you heard from the midwife yet and how far along are you? Did they tell you if they're identical or not? Mine appear to be non identical. Do you have all day nausea and food aversions like me?! It's really ramped up compared to my singleton pregnancies!

You can change hospitals at any point, I did at 37 weeks, you just usually have to name one at booking in @XjustagirlX x

Franklin321 · 02/08/2022 17:51

@JB2021 nobody I know has had their dating scan before 11 weeks, although I know the nhs website says it can be! Could you book a private scan for 10 weeks or so instead?

JB2021 · 02/08/2022 17:52

@Franklin321 going to see what happens on Friday. Its only because we are seeing family who live 3 hours away at that time so wanted to have had the scan to get the all clear to tell them

XjustagirlX · 02/08/2022 17:55

IVe just done my booking in self referral form and picked the nearest hospital. It looks like I can just change hospitals if I want and I wanted to get the ball rolling for my first appointment.

the nhs website says some tests need to be done before 10 weeks but how does this happen when the first appt can be up to 14 weeks?

Was this your dads dad by any chance? Only fraternal twins are genetic and they don't skip generations as such only the mother has the ability to affect the likelihood via genetics i.e releasing two eggs.

However you could have had the gene passed onto you by your Dad. Hence people saying it skips generations.

It can also just be random of course!

My mum had two sets of fraternal twins including me so I am slightly worried there may be two as well!

I had my dating scan at 10 weeks with my son but that was almost four years ago!

JB2021 · 02/08/2022 18:07

@hellosunshineagainx do you mind me asking what area you're in

Cambridgeshire, not willing to be more specific than that on here 🤣

Franklin321 · 02/08/2022 18:13

@hellosunshineagainx oh really! Maybe it depends on the trust then!

I think it's probably down to how busy they are. They probably try and do them as soon as they can but leaving enough availability for emergencies. I wonder if September due babies all have their 12 week scans late 🤣

Rainbowbaby23 · 02/08/2022 18:29

Oh my days this is horrible, anytime in hungry I feel nauseous, then I eat something and feel okay for a bit then about 10 minutes after feel nauseous again😭

Babynum2 · 02/08/2022 18:38

@LittleAcorn20 I have just got back from booking and she told me the weight loss is fine and i will gain it back once i start eating. Came out with 2 carrier bags of meds looked like i had picked up chinese takeaway.

They have told me ive flagged up for prem birth so i will see the doctor at 20 weeks they will check my cervix and most probably have a stitch put in. My 2 previous were prem 36 + 34weeks and i have since had some cells removed from cervix. Anybody else had their booking and been told the same? I really hope it helps i dont want another prem baby x

3isthemagicnumb3r · 02/08/2022 19:17

No, it was my mum's dad. So my mum's grandma had two sets of twins. Apparently fraternal twins run in familes passed down by the mothers side, causing me to hyper ovulate. So I can't blame my husband as I released two eggs lol! Is it your first pregnancy @hellosunshineagainx ? Interested to see if you end up having twins!

@babynum2 I had a large part of my cervix removed and will be scanned fortnightly to see if I need a stich. I carried my second child fine and went to full term without needing one, so I'm hoping this time is the same (my surgery took place after having my first child) x

Interesting that your mum didn't have twins then! But yes exactly your mums Dad carried the gene from your gma and gave it to your mum who then gave it to you! My mum had two single babies first in her 20s then the sets of twins in her 30s

No I have a son but had him at 28, I'm 32 now and maternal age is a risk factor for twins so add that on top of being a twin is why I am wondering. I don't feel any more sick than with my son though so hopefully not haha.

Hoping for just a single 🤞

Do you have any other children?

LittleAcorn20 · 02/08/2022 20:14

@Babynum2 glad you got plenty of meds though, they're so helpful 😬 I feel miles better today after just being able to snack a bit more.
At least they're aware of it all and are going to be monitoring. That should help. No experience of it myself. Hopefully they'll be able to help with the stitch if needed and baby will stay snuggled in there til full term!

I've got booking appt at 10+2
And scan at 12+3

LittleAcorn20 · 02/08/2022 20:16

Congrats twin mamas to be 👶👶
I think that's so exciting!
Thought that was what was causing my severe nausea but definitely just one in there!
