How has everyone been feeling about their weight gain progression?

I put on about 6lbs in first trimester and have stayed somewhere between 6-8lbs above starting weight in second trimester. I weighed myself last night and was shocked to see that within a week I'd gone up another 5lbs ... I guess some of it could be water weight but it freaked me out a bit. I'm definitely not as bloated as first trimester. I'm not even half way and have put on nearly a stone... I'm not eating anywhere near what I was first trimester and am staying active...

I know it doesn't really matter, and being healthy is what's important, but just seems a very rapid gain in a week! Confused

Thanks for setting up a new thread @CaptainCarp

@KizboBaggins I'm quite the opposite with my weight - I've been losing weight since my booking in appointment, I've dropped about 3kg so far. Saw the mental health nurse the other day & broke down because I'm worried about developing an ED again as I'm struggling to eat at all (I had one as a teenager) but she reassured me that it's because of the hyperemesis & I'll eat what I can, when I can but gave me a webchat to use to speak with a counsellor if I feel I need it.
Just keep worrying that baby isn't getting enough from me but every scan she's been measuring as should be.

Remember in terms of weight gain though, not only do you have baby's weight but you've got the weight of the placenta & the amniotic fluid - which I believe around this stage all weighs about a kg in total :)

CaptainCarp · 24/02/2022 11:22

@KizboBaggins i lost 0.5kg/1lb between my 10wk & 16wk midwife appointment i weighed myself at 20wk & had put on 3kg/6lb(-ish).
I was already just tipping to obese on BMI so I don't want to put on too much but understand I will. I dont feel more "fat" though... It has all gone to my bump so my trousers are getting tighter so that helps me remember its baby not me per se.

@Lianna93 the midwife told me that baby will basically leech everything it needs off you from whatever you can eat / your reserves.
I would say the fact you're worried is a good sign.. I mean in that you know that you'll eat when/what you can & not restrict?

My baby was actually measuring slightly small (midwife said all individual measurements were OK but put together was only 9th centile) so i think baby being correct size shows they are definitely getting enough of what they need.

Thanks @CaptainCarp for setting up!!

@KizboBaggins I have been avoiding weighing myself but I might give it a go today and see. I’m trying not to get worked up about a weight gain as it’s natural but I’m ready for spring so I can get out on walks again as I need to do some form of exercise!

Lianna93 · 24/02/2022 12:52

@CaptainCarp I genuinely went into this pregnancy with the mindset of eating really good & still sticking to my weightlifting but baby has had other ideas.
I'm too sore to do anything & the nausea is still a factor for me 🙈😂
But I'm doing my best. Eating whatever I can, whenever my body allows me to. So far, cereal seems to be my best friend 😂

My bmi also states I'm obese - which I'm definitely not 😂 It's muscle weight but bmi charts don't take that into account. Should see my notes because of it though 🙄 Honestly reads as if I'm a whole lot bigger than what I am 😬😂 Talking about giving me healthy lifestyle leaflets & the risks of obesity etc. Bmi is honestly the biggest load of crap I've ever encountered 😂

Mattieandmummy · 24/02/2022 13:49

Thanks @CaptainCarp

SamanthaVimes · 24/02/2022 15:09

Had my 20 week scan today, all good and it’s a boy!

CaptainCarp · 24/02/2022 15:51

@Lianna93 they are sent to test us from the start 😂
Yeah i definitely can't claim im obese due to muscle i have become a lazy shit since i started office work. I take bmi with a pinch as i was classed as overweight when i was training/playing sport 7 days a week & healthy when i came out of hospital after barely eating for 2 weeks.
it sounds like you are the exception but you'd think doctors/midwifes would take into account how you actually look & you current exercise levels!
My consultant was very much "well if you were a pound or 2 lighter you'd not be under me. Take aspirin & I'll see you at 32 weeks!"

I do have the healthy eating call as I thought it might help me not slip into "eating for 2". I've also got a glucose test at 26weeks.

@SamanthaVimes glad your scan went well. I wonder if we are going to have a spate of boys now!

Can I ask what everyone is doing or planning or doing work wise? I currently work full time, a mixture of earlies and lates ranging from 8-10 hours. It averages 37 hours per week. Hoping to cut down my hours to 30 when I go back and work just Monday - Wednesday.

For those of you that work and had a little one, did you find it really difficult?

My mum and dad are retired and they've said they would have baby girl when needed - they used to foster and child mind so they love it.

Just want to get something in place before I leave for maternity

@KizboBaggins because of the sickness I've had I've only put on and only recently, 6lbs but it seems to fluctuate daily. Baby girl is measuring fine though. I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain because everyone's pregnancy is different and best not to compare cos you'll worry yourself xx

SamanthaVimes · 24/02/2022 16:44

@Capricorn8990 at the moment we have DD in nursery 2 days a week and with DH’s parents 2 days a week. PILs would have had her full time but we feel she’s really benefiting from nursery (PILs speak their native language to her and we wanted her to have some English language exposure / mixing with other kids as well)

DH & I work full time hours on a 9 day fortnight so have alternate Fridays off where we look after DD

It’s worked really well for us and having 2 places where DD is settled is so helpful (eg if she’s a bit poorly for nursery but fine for PILs as it’s much less busy they’re still happy to have her even though it’s not their day) and vice versa we’ve been able to get the odd extra day at nursery if PILs are ill.

It is hard working full time hours and I think I’ll try to reduce down a bit after this maternity leave to maybe 3.5 or 4 normal days per week. Working from home has been such a blessing for us though as the time saved on commuting is time we spend with DD.

The only thing that’s really left us in difficulty is where DD has been too ill to go to PILs and I’ve taken time off work (she only wants boob when she’s really ill) or during covid isolations (ours, DDs and PILs all at different times annoyingly! Would have been more convenient for us to catch it at the same time!)

Fillybee · 24/02/2022 17:19

Hi there, my friend is due end of July, just wondering if you guys had started a Facebook group yet off the back off this thread? She doesn’t know how to use mumsnet hence me asking on her behalf! We were in one for our June 2018 babies and found it so helpful, so she is looking for another now for her second baby. Hope you’re all doing ok x

DayToNight · 24/02/2022 17:25

We've have DS1 and today found out we're expecting another boy!

With regards to weight, I've lost weight since my booking appointment but then went up 2 kg in the last couple of weeks.

My last pregnancy (4 years ago) we didn't have scales so I don't know if I followed the same pattern.

JJ1992 · 24/02/2022 17:52

@KizboBaggins i weighed myself on saturday and had gained 8-10lbs! This was just 18 weeks and with hardly a bump, i have been eating more than usual though so i can see why! But apparently this is still actually in a normal range x

Capricorn8990 · 24/02/2022 18:48

@SamanthaVimes ahh thank you for telling me your circumstances. Sounds ideal, aren't parents and in laws a god send!

Im going to discuss new hours with work before I go on mat leave and put a proposed shift together that can be negotiable and see what they say.

That's amazing that your PILs speak their native language to your DD, what language is it they speak?

KizboBaggins · 24/02/2022 18:58

@CaptainCarp same, I feel less "fat" now than I did at 11 weeks! That's definitely helped me feel less freaked out about the gain. I feel good so that's all that should matter (and that baby is healthy of course.). I'm still just under 19 weeks so have no idea if baby is growing correctly or not. The wait is so hard!

@Lianna93 I know a lot of people in a similar situation with BMI - shorter girls who are athletes, clearly physically healthy and fit, but muscle mass makes them tip into obese. Crazy really!

@SamanthaVimes congratulations! Quick question, did you go back to work full time straight after your DD maternity was up? I'm planning on going back 5 days per week, 37.5hrs full time after maternity but starting to wonder if it's a good idea 🤔

@JJ1992 sounds similar to me. I have a little bump, and don't have any obvious weight gain anywhere but bump, yet still shot up in weight! Reassuring to hear it's normal though. Whenever I ask midwife about weight they just say "stop weighing yourself" 😂

SamanthaVimes · 24/02/2022 19:15

@Capricorn8990 they speak Cantonese to her. She doesn’t say many words in canto but clearly understands it as she’ll follow their instructions (when the mood suits) her main woods in canto is “biscuit” so she’s got the essentials covered Grin

@KizboBaggins I did one week of half days using up the last bit of my annual leave to ease myself back in then straight into full time. DD had already started nursery a month or so before so had settled by then. We started her a bit early as she was a total lockdown baby and hadn’t ever spent time away from us so it took her a little while to get the hang of it bless her. She loves it there now though, if she thinks we’re not entertaining enough she fetches her nursery bag and puts it on by the door Grin

KizboBaggins · 24/02/2022 19:25

@SamanthaVimes omg that's adorable! Smart move getting her settled in nursery before your maternity ended. That hadn't crossed my mind. I don't know anyone expecting or with an infant nearby, so will need to get baby socialised somehow! At least there will hopefully be some more club type things now lockdown is over.

Ahh ok, I'm torn between using my annual leave to take almost an extra month off, or to do short weeks for an extended period... I guess I'm probably worrying too early on, but I love to plan lol. How did you find it going back full time very quickly? I can imagine it was quite difficult emotionally!

purpleskyssssss · 24/02/2022 19:26

Thanks for setting this one up, had my 20 week scan today all is good and defiantly a little boy ❤️

Mattieandmummy · 24/02/2022 20:05

I dropped down to three days a week when I had my first baby which I'm hoping to carry on once my maternity leave is up for this one. The plan is to hopefully increase my hours to five short days once this bump starts school which finger crossed will be ok. No idea what we do for school holidays though, my first is three so we've got a little while to work it out.

NamelessBaby1 · 24/02/2022 20:29

@KizboBaggins my mum used to work in HR and she has suggested to me using my leave to do shorter weeks on return to see how I get in before thinking about asking for a change in hours or anything; that way I'd still be getting full time pay but can think about reducing hours after if I feel it would help thereafter. It still seems to far away though, can't even decide how much time to take for mat leave yet never mind what will happen after!

I'm also hoping my mum will retire by the time I'm back to work so she's around for childcare, lol.
