Hi Ladies! Well, I had a day to be sure.
For the past week or so, Baby Boy has been moving less than he was, and when he did, it wasn't as forceful of kicks as I had gotten used to. So I call the midwife line on Monday and she said to come into the maternity day assessment clinic at Queen Charlotte's, which I did. They listed to baby's heartbeat and were happy with it, but wanted me to have a scan too, to be sure that all is well. The ultrasound department couldn't take me on Monday, so I had to go back today.
I showed up early, had my scan, looked good. Yay! OK, now I am supposed to go back to the day assessment clinic so that they can evaluate the results and I can be on my way. Not so fast! They now want to do a continuous fetal heartbeat monitoring to check that. So, they hooked me up to that and we did that for a while. I have high BP and I've told them that I think we need to up my dose because it is OK after a dose but then creeps up in the hours before the next dose, so they were checking that too while I was sitting there. It came time for my next dose, so they had me take it so they could observe what happened. Here's where things got interesting.
I had been laying semi-reclined on my back for a long time at this point. A few minutes after I took my BP meds, I suddenly felt very warm and flushed and was having a hard time breathing. I started to get quite faint and feeling weak and sleepy as though I were about to pass out. I called the midwife over and told her I felt unwell. My BP had dropped about 40 points in a matter of minutes because the meds combined with laying on my back, causing baby to put pressure on my vena cava. Baby's heartbeat dropped for a little bit too. They quickly put me on my left side and within a few minutes I was feeling better and my BP was normal.
Frankly, this scared to sh*t out of me, but I'm relieved everything is OK. On the upside, they now agree that my dose should be increased to avoid swings in my BP.
I can now say from experience that yes, laying on your back CAN cause baby to put pressure on the vena cava and cause BP to drop, which can affect baby's heart rate too.
I hope everyone else has had an uneventful day!
P.S. welcome @Ruibies!
