I know you all love these ones! My daughter is due in February, and she is, so far, nameless. By this stage, ds had had his name for ages, but am finding a girl's name much more of a challenge. I want something reasonably distinctive, with some history to it, and perhaps a little glamour too.
Dh has sternly vetoed my first choice, Angelica. His favourite names are Frances and Olivia, which I like....but are they 'the one'.
Other names in the frame include Nina, Edith, Livia, Lucy, Elizabeth, Catherine, Phoebe, Mia and Viola.
Any more for any more?

80sMum · 09/11/2004 22:39

What about Áine (pronounced 'Ornia'). It's Irish, I believe.

serenequeen · 09/11/2004 22:46

have come back specially to say i also really like antonia... but dh vetoed it as he is a card carrying new labourite and didn't want anyone thinking we had named our child after tony blair! as if!!!

mothernature · 09/11/2004 22:54

How about Trinity?

linnet · 09/11/2004 22:59

80'smum I know an Aine. Must admit when I first met her I thought her name was spelt Onya not so. and it is an Irish name.

tortoiseshell · 09/11/2004 23:08

Names I like, but wouldn't necessarily use are; Beatrice (dh hates it but I love it), Lucia, Eleanor (or Elinor) (knew a girl at junior school called Eleanor who was SO pretty) , Elise (I knew a girl with that name, and she was SO sophisticated!) - are you going for any sort of theme with the name? Some of them look quite Italian, which is why these ones have sprung to mind, but then Elizabeth and Catherine are more English. Ophelia is really pretty, and Ariane if you like Greek names.

hana · 09/11/2004 23:10

Mabel
Ruby
Martha

Frenchgirl · 09/11/2004 23:28

DD was nearly called Saskia (but couldn't totally convince dh....) oh well. Still love the name! She's called Lauren Alice (I know, Lauren's popular....)
I love Sophia too, (and it's dd's best friend's name)

(Are you sure about Edith though? reminds me of edith piaf who I dislike intensely....) Love Viola and Nina particularly in your list, as well as pph's Cecily

lou33 · 09/11/2004 23:33

Sobernow, I wanted to call dd1 delilah, but dh wouldn't, so we compromised

Lockets, if it's any help my boys are called dylan and rory

piper · 10/11/2004 00:10

i like phoebe i wanted to call ours that but dh didnt like it (he didnt like any i liked!) i think its a lovely name also like mia and olivia

CountessDracula · 10/11/2004 00:19

LOVE ruby but my 4yo dog is called Ruby and since then have met billions of little girls so called, I suspect will be very popular soon.

I like pph's idea of cecily -though I know 2 and they are both bonkers

My dd is Louisa which I adore as is sweet and a tiny bit unusual at the same time.

Know a lot of Mias

Esme IMO is v nice

CountessDracula · 10/11/2004 00:20

ps I like nina but dh said neenaww ambulance coming...

turquoise · 10/11/2004 01:01

I love Nina. Suits a little girl or a woman.

Love old lady names both "downstairs" like Elsie, Ruby, Maisie, Mabel,Gertie, and "upstairs": Edith, Phoebe, Alice, Grace, Lettice, Loveday, Hermione. My dd is Elizabeth and was Elsie for short when she was a baby.

Lily, Alice, Nina or Tess are my current favourites of that ilk. I also really like Tallulah and Tabitha, and rather fancied Margeaux until Chardonnay became popular.

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 07:41

Nina is a favourite of mine too - really lovely name. Mia is too common alas. And I agree about Livia.

Also love Antonia.

My other favs are Gloria, Barbara, Angela, Stella.

My dd is called Astrid Eve. Hadn't thought of the name until we saw her silver blonde hair when she was born and it just fitted.

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 07:44

also love Ella but i think that may be quite a common name now?

Gingerbear, my DD is Katherine and I am Della !

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 08:01

you've reminded me, Kitty is a lovely name (I had a great auntie Kitty)

bootsmonkey · 10/11/2004 08:21

Thea is gorgeous, and is a shorter version of Dorothea, Althea, Theodora and Anthea if you want to give a full name that can be shortened. Also like Erin, Phoebe, Imogen (DH vetoed that due to the Lennon connection - Imogen all the people...) Maisie, Iona.

SpringChicken · 10/11/2004 08:46

I love Thea, Lily and Freya - DP hates them all!

When I was pg with DD we had loads of girls names and only 1 boys name but Evie was our favourite out of all the girls names.

Gingerbear · 10/11/2004 08:54

Kitty, do I know you??? Spooky!

oooggs · 10/11/2004 09:49

I really like Erin Leigh and if DS was a girl that is what he would have been called. We only argeed on one boys name. I think they are much harder.

motherpeculiar · 10/11/2004 09:51

Aine (awn-ya) is Irish for Anne. I know as it's my name

I also like Aoife (Irish for Eva) (pronounced eee-fa)

Sorcha (for Sarah) or Roisin (Rose?)

there is also Roscha, but I don't know what that is for. Pretty though.

Eiblish (Elizabeth) or Eilis (Elizabeth) same pronounciation, different spelling

off the Irish theme - I do love Eliza, Iseult and Isabel

don't know what we are having yet and DH refuses to talk names
