I know you all love these ones! My daughter is due in February, and she is, so far, nameless. By this stage, ds had had his name for ages, but am finding a girl's name much more of a challenge. I want something reasonably distinctive, with some history to it, and perhaps a little glamour too.
Dh has sternly vetoed my first choice, Angelica. His favourite names are Frances and Olivia, which I like....but are they 'the one'.
Other names in the frame include Nina, Edith, Livia, Lucy, Elizabeth, Catherine, Phoebe, Mia and Viola.
Any more for any more?

[quick sidetrack: bundle, thought you were in your cellar (possibly preparing a big pit where you're going to keep me for a few weeks)? i just phoned you on both numbers.]

OK everyone, give it to me straight, what about Amandine --- as a middle name? means 'beloved', i love the sound of it. tell me, is it ghastly?

suzywong · 06/01/2005 11:19

Maxim De Winter
Mmmmmm reminds me of Laurence Olivier in Rebecca

My fave girls' name is Sadie

am in N4 library, listening to local schoolchildren sing that speckled frog song...(sorry my phone battery ran out as i have been neglecting it too!) and doing a spot of surfing before descending into the cellar again. it's the spiders in my hair i can't stand (thankfully dead) and i get so distracted by centuries old pieces of paper..at least i jetisoned a stash of seashells to the nursery. is it lunchtime yet??

amandine is v nice, and posh, if a little liquer-like (don't let that put you off...

bakedpotato · 06/01/2005 11:22

[agonised emoticon] i can't say SW... 3 syllables, ends with an 'a'.

bundle · 06/01/2005 11:23

ps I am getting the cellar ready for you bp, love, Mr Herring...xxx

(my sister, Amanda, is beloved too...mine is small...if only)

pps I love Esther too, and Naomi (dh didn't like either)

suzywong · 06/01/2005 11:26

hello Bundle!!

did you know your Australian (RL) namesake is a spokeswoman for a brand of Xmas Hampers

Marina · 06/01/2005 11:26

Bakedpotato, you wanted it straight, Amandine is jolly pretty but does give me a tasty image of an almond croissant...
Aloha, I will fly the flag for Catherine, a very nice name IMO
Wanted Ellen Lucy for dd, which would have achieved the one hundred and eighty of really annoying both grandmas. After our "family" Christmas this year I am wondering if it is too late to change her name by deed poll.
Also really like Christabel and Theodora, and Edith is lovely.

bundle · 06/01/2005 11:27

hello SW [smile}
I'm thrilled about that, hope she provides good hampers...! how are your fragrant boys? dd1's last day at nursery today, starts school next tuesday..

popsycal · 06/01/2005 11:27

OH REALLY LOVE ELLEN AND ELEANOR
BUT DH IS DOESNT
SURPRISE

ooops

Marina · 06/01/2005 11:29

Bundle, I'm glad to hear you had your moby switched off in the library...have just failed again to beat you to the JLP knitting wool sale, all that is left is a vomit-coloured stash of cotton tape, can't think why that failed to sell.

bundle · 06/01/2005 11:29

oh marina, theodora is lovely
i love catherine but with a k has the edge for me, because i love Kitty

Marina · 06/01/2005 11:29

And GOOD LUCK to you all and dd for next Tuesday!

bakedpotato · 06/01/2005 11:31

i like Katharine (dd is part Katharine)...
all those As

bundle · 06/01/2005 11:31

not sure about cotton tape at all. i love my 4 ply pale pink cotton and spent awhole evening wondering what to do with it... and i'm ashamed to say i haven't switched off my moby it gave up the ghost (norty) but there's so much bloomin noise in here no one would notice anyway.
(sorry for hijack, and back to the cellar for me..)

Marina · 06/01/2005 11:34

You can be a Catherine with a "c" and still be a Kitty or a Kate - or a lot of other names too in my house.
So you fell foul of the beleaguered librarian's secret weapon - the stealth-phone-battery-zapper bwahahaha! (End of hijack also)

bakedpotato · 06/01/2005 11:38

marina, why would ellen lucy have annoyed both grannies?

Marina · 06/01/2005 11:43

Ellen was MIL's hated MIL, Lucy was my mum's hated stepmother. But Ellen was also my beloved paternal grandma and we were sorry not to be able to use the names. It would honestly have been more trouble than it was worth.

ellimum · 06/01/2005 11:48

I like Honour and Ariadne (from Charlottes Web!). My niece is Katherine and she is lovely.

Tinker · 06/01/2005 11:54

So strange to see Violet being discussed as a genuine option. It's my mother's name and is not trendy AT ALL. Plus, she's always known as Vi - my dad used to shudder at that. There's one in Coronation Street now as well - young, pretty

Like Amandine.

huggybear · 06/01/2005 12:06

i really wanted elsie with both of my pregnancies but i had boys! my mil and her family hated it..... which just made me like it more!!!
