I know you all love these ones! My daughter is due in February, and she is, so far, nameless. By this stage, ds had had his name for ages, but am finding a girl's name much more of a challenge. I want something reasonably distinctive, with some history to it, and perhaps a little glamour too.
Dh has sternly vetoed my first choice, Angelica. His favourite names are Frances and Olivia, which I like....but are they 'the one'.
Other names in the frame include Nina, Edith, Livia, Lucy, Elizabeth, Catherine, Phoebe, Mia and Viola.
Any more for any more?

The one I know of (a lady in her 80's!) is pronounced with the emphasis on the O, hence Lee-O-nie. Interesting to hear of other ways of pronouncing it.

Goldfish · 09/11/2004 20:32

Clara, Alice, Alicia, Rosemary?

zubb · 09/11/2004 20:42

Iris, Rose

aloha · 09/11/2004 20:52

I love Lydia, but dh has an irrational prejudice against it and there's no shifting him. Also like Matilda, Cecelia, Eloise and Madeline... also Esme, but my friend's daughter has that name so feel it would be 'stealing'! And we have an Emily already. Keep 'em coming...it all adds to the confusion

Boys names are so simple in comparison.

we have difficulty chosing names not used as well.

bonkerz · 09/11/2004 20:55

when i have a girl its gonna be called
Breanna Maine
Have had a thing about that name since a kid, not sure why!

Goldfish · 09/11/2004 20:59

Leona, Isabella, Lucinda, Leonora

lou33 · 09/11/2004 21:01

That's interesting aloha, I always found picking boys names a nightmare! Found girls much easier.

Ghosty · 09/11/2004 21:04

Lydia is lovely
Lily?
Abigail (a personal favourite ) ?
Rose?

I love Nina and Elizabeth too

Hulababy · 09/11/2004 21:06

I also find it much harder to pick boys names.

My DD is Mollie Olivia, so Olivia is a name I like obviously

I also like names such as Poppy, Lily, Ellie, Evie, India, Lucie, Millie, Maisie...

My dd is Phoebe - a lovely name. What about Maya? Grace (for glamour). Vita (distinctive and historical). I personally wouldn't go for Olivia and Lucy as they are too popular IMO.

MissHoolie · 09/11/2004 21:41

Cliona - pronounced Clee-ana

KristinaM · 09/11/2004 21:43

Madeline/Maddie, Mia and Abbie/Abigail and really popular now. Agree with others comments on Livia.

My only piece of wisdom is to give her a name that will still sound Ok when she is a spotty teenager or middle aged teacher/engineer/whatever, not just when she's a cute baby/toddler!

princesspeahead · 09/11/2004 21:48

what about cecily? bit more victorian and unusual than cecilia. very "importance of being earnest"! think it goes with your ds's name as well.
agree re masses of mias and olivias around. particularly like viola and nina on your list

lou33 · 09/11/2004 21:50

Sense. It's a name from the 1700s and 1800s in my family . I don't know it's origin except that it might be from the word Saint(s).

Congratulations on your pregnancy, aloha!

If my next baby is a girl she will be Jocelyn Bridget. (promounced joss - er - lin)

Poo2 · 09/11/2004 22:24

DS is called Conrad. Love it. Also like Gabriel, Gabe for short.

linnet · 09/11/2004 22:27

I love the name Pheobe. what about Felicity, Poppy, Daisy, Lilly, Grace?

pinkmama · 09/11/2004 22:27

Completely agree with popsycal about Ruby (my dd's name!), my name is Elizabeth, what I think is good about it is there are 14 names which can be taken from it, so if they don't like Elizabeth, they can choose one of its derivatives!

serenequeen · 09/11/2004 22:29

Isabella, Elizabeth, Victoria, Florence, Mary, Catherine, Ruth, Claudia, Octavia, Helen(a), Eleanor, Marie, Coco, Isadora, Elle, Nina, Gina, Sophia...

i would never name a child of mine livia due to the association with the roman emperor augustus's wife.

Gingerbear · 09/11/2004 22:30

DD is Katherine Della. I too chose a name that could be cute (Katie) when she is little, and have some gravitas as she gets older. I also like Martha, Elsa, Frances and Eleanor

My grandma was Cecilia. My Great aunt was Keturah (shortened to Tura) and my grat gran was Clara. (Have been researching my family tree recently!)
