I know you all love these ones! My daughter is due in February, and she is, so far, nameless. By this stage, ds had had his name for ages, but am finding a girl's name much more of a challenge. I want something reasonably distinctive, with some history to it, and perhaps a little glamour too.
Dh has sternly vetoed my first choice, Angelica. His favourite names are Frances and Olivia, which I like....but are they 'the one'.
Other names in the frame include Nina, Edith, Livia, Lucy, Elizabeth, Catherine, Phoebe, Mia and Viola.
Any more for any more?

dd is Phoebe - everyone loves it (or says they do!). We're expecting another girl and have Hope and Grace on the shortlist so far

serenequeen · 11/11/2004 21:55

tex, i can't move for falling over mauds round by me!

tex111 · 11/11/2004 22:18

Serenequeen, that is so interesting. Will definitely remember that if we do have a girl in the future. Isn't it funny how these names seem to come out of some kind of universal consciousness. We've been talking about the name Maude since we were pregnant the first time (about three years). I guess it's just in the air.

tex111 · 11/11/2004 22:19

Serenqueen, do you mind me asking where you are?

serenequeen · 11/11/2004 22:20

not at all, tex, i'm in inner london

aloha, i notice you are being v. tactful and not letting us know your favourites from the suggestions!

serenequeen · 11/11/2004 22:21

tex, perhaps i was exaggerating a little, i know of two or three!

tex111 · 11/11/2004 22:25

We're in SE London so I bet I start hearing the name soon. Ah well, will have to get more creative.

serenequeen · 11/11/2004 22:26

ooh, whereabouts, tex?

tex111 · 11/11/2004 22:28

Near Bromley.

serenequeen · 11/11/2004 22:32

agree with you re the "universal consciousness" thing - i'm sure many parents think they have come up with something v. original and distinctive only to find it is more usual than they thought. have to say originality in naming hasn't bothered me - just as well!

tex111 · 11/11/2004 22:36

I'm not interested in choosing anything too unusual, just not so popular that there would be six kids with the same name in DS's class. I do like the traditional names but they're getting quite popular now. DS is a Tobias and I've only met a couple of other boys with the same name so maybe there won't be loads of them when he goes to school. At the end of the day, I guess it's just impossible to second guess this stuff. I may think I've come up with something original and then discover it's THE name of the year.

Lou22 · 13/11/2004 19:00

I quite like Amiah but DH can't stand it!

anto · 13/11/2004 21:52

Where I live (West London) most popular girls names in the past few years are definitely Scarlett and Lola - once I was at baby clinic and there were 3 Lolas in there, which put me right off. And last year there were 3 Scarletts at DD1's nursery (40 kids in total).

I know 3 Esmes, lots of Florences (but I still love it), also many Evies and Avas. Also a couple of Mauds and Ellas. Not so many Mias - too ordinary now. I have two friends with Lilas, which I personally wouldn't choose just because people making the assumption that I was copying Kate Moss. Also Trinny from Trinny & Susannah has a Lyla.

Do you like Sybilla? I think that's very pretty. Also love Georgina (Georgie for short) and Christabel (although I'm biased because I was nearly called that).

DD2's second name is Sophia because dh wouldn't have it as a first name, worst luck.

sweetkitty · 13/11/2004 23:46

We were between Abbie and Caitlin went for Abbie (Abigail) no 20 on list!!

Love Leonie

And also Elliot for a boy - onlyjoking are we related?

love lily and rose
dh doesnt

warmmum · 05/01/2005 20:32

We were going to call dd2 Lucinda, but when she appeared she turned into a Matilda. I guess it was just one of those delivery room moments. - you know, when you look at the baby and just know that it's not going to have the name you chose!

aloha · 05/01/2005 21:09

Ok, we are really no further forward Chez Aloha. I really like Cecily atm - or Cicely - seen it spelled both ways, but dh is being boring about it. It goes with our surname and ds's name, as PPH says.
Still like Viola, Nina, Edith (though suspect it's about to become v trendy), and I like Catherine and Susan - a name that really has gone out of fashion - but which dh doesn't like. Like Christabel (suffragette name too) but the ending of it sounds too much like our surname. Dh still likes Frances best, which I like, but it is my middle name and I didn't like it when I was growing up and it was unfashionable and it is hard to shake off that feeling, iykwim. It will almost certainly be her middle name though - esp as it was my grandmothers name (other grandmother Florence)
How long do you have before you HAVE to name your child btw

6 weeks, I think, aloha. Can call her "baby" until then!

What about Celia? I love Celia. Any good?

JanH · 05/01/2005 21:12

And I know a 12-yr-old Edith, who is lovely, if it helps.

aloha · 05/01/2005 21:12

Dh turns up his nose at Cecelia and Cicely. I keep thinking, 'what business is it of yours anyway?"
