Waters breaking stories

Currently 31 weeks pregnant with DC2 and I'm wanting to hear stories about how your waters broke🙈

I was started off with DD1 so never got to experience my waters going naturally as they were broken in the Labour ward. I'm excited for everything to go as natural as possible this time but I keep thinking about how and when my waters will go 🤣

Somone told me they mostly go at night time so if this is true I'll be home when it happens but does anyone else have any stories about how and when theirs went?

Thanks all 😁

I'm also fascinated to know this! Currently pregnant with DC3 but DC1's broke when I was in the birthing pool already (so I didn't even notice) and DC2's were broken when I was induced.

Mine have never gone naturally.
1st was a full induction, 3 days, 7hr 38mins after they broke waters.
2nd I started dilating 1cm at 39+6, went to hospital at 40+4 and only 5cm. They refused to break waters because of polyhdramnios so stuck on ward, next day still 5cm so they broke then and it was like a waterfall and he was born 2hr 19mins later.
3rd. I got to 8cm with waters still intact, I was fed up of pain after 2 days of contractions so asked for epidural but the midwife talked me in to breaking waters instead. She was born 11 mins later with just a few pushes. I had minimal pain relief with her and I clearly remember the change in the pain intensity once waters went so kinda glad they stay intact so well lol.
Our twins were elcs. Not sure if going cs or vb this time yet, got until 36wk to decide.

First baby , 3 days before due date ...
Waters broke all over the bed !
Off we went to the hospital
Second baby
Waters broke just before the baby was born , she came out in a rush !

WaterBottle123 · 27/05/2021 08:51

First baby on the front step when leaving for hospital, a big gush! Laboured for 5 hours afterwards.

Second baby during active labour at home, about 10 mins before I started pushing. Didn't bother telling midwife they'd gone she wasn't impressed with me! But then I'd also refused all internals.

SometimesALime · 27/05/2021 09:00

First baby and 3 days past my due date. No contractions, no braxton hicks, no back ache, nothing to indicate any labour starting. I was just awake at 5am and lay there for a minute then felt an internal pop and expected a huge gush and then nothing, nothing at all. Dh woke with me doing a fast intake of breath, told him I thought I felt my waters go. Stood up and loads of water came out. Luckily we had hard wood floor so Dh cleaned that up whilst I went for a wee.

I continued to just seep water for hours, no contractions. I rang the hospital 3 hours later to say my waters had gone and they advised me to come in. Checked and confirmed waters gone but no dilation. Asked me to come back in in 24 hours if I wasn't already back in hospital.

Ended up pant-less for the day just sat on a towel on a waterproof mat at home as just a constant leak and didn't want to use up a million maternity pads. Contractions finally started around 11am.

My advice, if you haven't already got a waterproof mattress cover get one now, it also helps with leaky boobs or blood loss after giving birth. We had 2, one on the bed, one ready to go on.

meltybuttons · 27/05/2021 09:00

I went for a wee just before bed, about 11:30. I felt a small 'pop' in my belly. Didn't think anything of it and went to bed. Just as I was falling asleep I felt a trickle and stood up to check, waters gushed everywhere.

Gave birth 32 hours later, first and only child.

M24L · 27/05/2021 09:03

@Doilooklikeatourist was the mattress unusable afterwards? I distinctively remember the smell of waters breaking when mines were done in the hospital and once back in the maternity ward after DD1 was born all I could smell was "waters". Is it maybe best to get a waterproof mattress protector for closer to the time?

Mine went naturally when I was 10cm dilated just before I got the urge to push. A huge pop and liquid rushing all over me and the hospital bed.

M24L · 27/05/2021 09:08

@SometimesALime this was another of my queries lol because I don't fancy ruining my mattress.

Getting my waters broken was an experience but I'm so excited for them to hopefully go on their own just feel like I need to be ready in case 🤣

No , I was in hospital for about 4 days , and my husband hadn’t even changed the sheets !
I wasn’t pleased
The mattress was fine , lasted us a few more years

EssentialHummus · 27/05/2021 09:15

In the car on the way to the hospital. I was near-on fully dilated by then.

SometimesALime · 27/05/2021 09:17

@M24L the 2 mattress protectors were certainly cheaper than it would have been to replace my mattress Grin

Plus we have definitely needed them on the children's mattresses with leaky nappies, sick once, bed wetting. Worth the money.

Best places to get them are from incontinence shops they are online.

HarrietHairbrush · 27/05/2021 09:17

Dc1 with a gush on arrival at hospital 3 am
Dc2 with a gush at home about to leave for hospital 7am
Dt1 broken for me at hosp to induce labour of twins
Dt2 born in waters

1ce1cebaby · 27/05/2021 09:19

Mine seems like such a non event reading these lol. I wasn’t even sure it was my waters. I was on the floor cleaning and when I got up there was a trickle. I went to the toilet and some more trickle. So I googled ‘can waters breaking be a trickle’ this continued for a while - little and often. Got checked that evening to confirm it was my waters but no contractions so back home. They continued to trickle until contractions started the following day - was a right nuisance!

Blueskysinjune · 27/05/2021 09:20

DC1 in the hospital coffee shop in a gush. But I was already in early labour at this point. DC2 I woke up at 6am in a puddle 😖 at 41 weeks. I had to be induced as labour didn't start.

Justme10 · 27/05/2021 09:20

Mine went while I was sleeping 5 days before my due date, thought I was peeing myself until I realised I had no control of it and it just wouldn't stop Grin Didn't have DS till 3 days later via emcs

AhaShakeHeartbreak12 · 27/05/2021 09:22

Mine wasn't natural, I had to have a planned csection due to risk from some complications. But when they popped my waters in theatre (I had polyhdraminos so too much water) it was literally like niagra falls haha

Gumbo · 27/05/2021 09:32

Mine never went Hmm Confused. I was going to be induced on my due date due to measuring really small and 'significantly reduced fluid' but went into labour 24 hours before then. Waters didn't break at home or in hospital - I'm still waiting and the 'baby' is 15 yo Grin. It would appear that my 'reduced fluid' meant exactly that!

elf1985 · 27/05/2021 09:32

First popped during active labour, second popped as I walked across the dining room. Midwife refused to accept that they had gone until I went in to see her.

Leodot · 27/05/2021 09:36

Mine broke at 1am Tuesday. I got up to use the loo then went back to bed. Ten minutes later I had a weird backache and stood up just as my waters broke on the bedroom carpet! It was like a bucket! It all went in one go! I’d never seen so much liquid 😂. I then had to be induced with the drip 24 hours later as my labour didn’t start and there was an infection risk as my waters had gone. Drip went in at midnight Wednesday and I had my beautiful DD at 830 Wednesday morning. 🥰

scarfaceace · 27/05/2021 09:36

It was the day after our due date, and there was no warning, no contractions or pain. They went in the middle of a busy town, outside Boots! I just felt the urge to wee but couldn't stop it or control it - it wasn't a gush, but it was definitely more than a trickle! I stood on the corner while DH fetched the car and he took me straight to the hospital. (home was some miles away). 5 hours later DS arrived.

Jinglebells87 · 27/05/2021 09:42

First time - at hospital (near the end of a long labour), thought I needed a poo.. went to the toilet, did a small push and waters exploded up and all over the bathroom floor (still not sure how!?!).

Second time - at home, stood up a couple hours after contractions had started in the morning and just felt a gush, not enough to puddle on the floor, but just got my clothes soaked.

M24L · 27/05/2021 09:59

@PrimeraVez how was your experience with the birthing pool?

OP posts:
M24L · 27/05/2021 10:01

Some of these stories are reassuring I think my main worry was it happening in public during the weekly shop or something 🙈 I'm such a panicker so for it to happen in public would really freak me out.

@scarfaceace Omg this would be my worst nightmare, how did you remain calm?

Woke up at 5am thinking I'd wet the bed! It was my waters. I had no idea how much "water" there would be - it was like Niagra falls when I stood up and I actually apologised as I waddled onto the labour ward because of the amount gushing out of me!
