Waters breaking stories

Currently 31 weeks pregnant with DC2 and I'm wanting to hear stories about how your waters broke🙈

I was started off with DD1 so never got to experience my waters going naturally as they were broken in the Labour ward. I'm excited for everything to go as natural as possible this time but I keep thinking about how and when my waters will go 🤣

Somone told me they mostly go at night time so if this is true I'll be home when it happens but does anyone else have any stories about how and when theirs went?

Thanks all 😁

I didnt feel a pop, I just woke up at 1am with a bit of a trickle, so I went for a wee, then came back to bed, then felt a gush as soon as I lay back down (was getting comfy before I was about to ring the hospital, as I had really bad pelvic pains and laying down was the only position I could "sit" in!) but was sleeping on a towel ready, so the bed was okay.

Mattress protectors are a necessity in your third trimester, just in case :)

7am on a Sunday morning. My waters went as I rolled over in bed and just as OH had clicked the kettle on. I'm still not sure if I felt a pop or heard something because it all happened at the exact same time. I felt like I was weeing, then realised I couldn't stop and when I stood up it gushed a little (I put towels in between my legs to catch this) then just burst out laughing at my partner because that was the start of him not drinking a hot drink for a few years. Grin
I didn't progress within 24 hours so was in to be induced on the drip, they had to break my fore waters though, that was a strange feeling.

Ds1- had a show at 6:50am, got to hospital at 8:30am, they broke my waters at 9:50am and he was delivered immediately

Ds2- had a show at 2:30pm, got to hospital at 3:30pm, I felt the urge to push and my waters went all over the midwife and he was delivered immediately at 4:06pm

We were told in the antenatal class at the hospital that if our waters broke when the baby's head hadn't engaged we had to call an ambulance. I was interested in this and asked a question to be brushed off with: "oh that's not going to happen, it's incredibly rare for labour to start out by the waters breaking."

I thought this was odd as my sister's labour, plus the labours of two out of the three close friends (close enough to hear about their birth story) who had DCs had started with the waters suddenly breaking, and contractions beginning afterwards. But I didn't get the chance to say anything to the midwife as she clearly didn't want to hear.

The next week one of the other ladies waters broke in the middle of the class and she was carted off to the ward.

Weeks later my waters went at 4am, nearly 2 weeks overdue. Had my first contraction in the ambulance they had sent because the head wasn't engaged. Grin

Should have added i felt something "give" (my sister reckons she heard hers pop bit i just felt mine pop) and then the gush. I had a towel by the bed and I just jammed it between my legs.

I knew it was waters because I had just been to the loo for the twentieth time that night.
That didn't stop the midwife at the hospital trying to tell me I had just passed myself though. Hmm

First baby my waters broke naturally when I rolled over in bed at about 2am. Was quite a big pop and gush. I was 39 weeks. Thought I’d wet myself so knelt down to sniff it and smelt really sweet. Then as I walked to the bathroom it was just not stop trickling out, the leaking carrier on until I had baby almost 72 hours later!

Second and third babies were planned c sections so didn’t experience it again.

YouSeeMee · 27/05/2021 21:50

Twice with a pop while still in bed - between 7 and 8am.
Third time about 5 mins before dd was born. Midwife was trying to sort out the flood on the floor when she had to rush to catch the baby.

YouSeeMee · 27/05/2021 21:50

Literally catch the baby because I was standing up!

55378OO8 · 27/05/2021 22:04

2 labours, both started with waters breaking in a huge gush. Both times it happened at night. Definitely invest in the mattress protector!

Crowsaregreat · 27/05/2021 22:34

Dc1 I had a hind water leak (sac is ruptured high up) so a bit squeezed out with every contraction, which was nice.

Dc2 mid contraction there was a loud pop and a bucket full of goo splatted out onto the floor, I was standing and couldn't move as I was scared I'd slip and I was adamant I'd shat myself but it was just the feeling of the baby coming down. I kept trying to get anyone who came near me to wipe off the non existent poo :) contractions were much more intense once the waters went.

Good luck! Don't be disheartened if you don't go all natural.

Monicatatie · 27/05/2021 23:29

First baby, I was leaking and didnt really realise my waters were going.
Second baby, I was at my daughter's baby ballet class, we were all sat in a circle and my waters went in a big gush. It was a bit embarrassing but everyone was really nice and offering me help etc.
Third baby, I woke up in the middle of the night to my waters breaking. Again, a big gush like with baby number 2.

Freecuthbert · 28/05/2021 00:42

I was in slow labour for like 9 days, and five of these was me in hospital being induced as I was not dilating and they decided baby needed to come out now. They decided my induction failed so I was prepped for emergency c section, just as I was being taken to theatre I felt a big contraction and then I was all wet, thought the contraction was just so big it had made me wet myself, for some reason I didn't even entertain the idea that my waters broke!

Wobbitcatcher · 28/05/2021 01:01

I had 2 natural labours and births but my waters were broken each time.

I seem to get stuck at about 6cm with bulging waters.

With my first I was like that for hours and the waters were broken but not very well so just trickled and my labour was awfully long.

With my second the midwife did a better job and there was a satisfying warm gush and a brief feeling over relief followed by a strong urge to push and baby was out in 30 mins.

I’d love to know if a better job of breaking the waters first time would have reduced my labour time!

MrsMiddleMother · 28/05/2021 09:50

Mine went just before I was 38 weeks, I was having a nap and suddenly woke up wet I quickly ran to the toilet as I thought I'd peed the bed! But when I was on the toilet the water just kept trickling, it wasn't like when you have a wee and you kinda push i had no control of it! After the hospital confirmed my waters had gone, they kept trickling on and off and it was just the oddest sensation ever.

WyldStallions · 28/05/2021 09:59

DC1 in hospital 11 days overdue waiting to be induced. Hospital was v busy so they said they'd start first thing in the morning. In the night (couldn't sleep) I heard a sort of click, felt a pressure change. Sat up and water gushed over the bed.

#2 waters were broken by hook at 7cm when in labour

#3 coughing fit in the night, felt a small gush. Turned out to be hind waters and his head plugged it so wasn't the dramatic unstoppable bucketload of #1. They had to break his forewaters using the hook again.

#4 asleep, felt a click again, leapt out of bed and water poured all over the floor.

3 SROMs in 4 deliveries, each time first sign of labour before contractions started.

CheeseandWine91 · 28/05/2021 12:53

Mine went when I started pushing

Sweettea1 · 28/05/2021 13:32

Ds1. My waters broke just as I lay down in bed togo asleep I felt them pop like someone had stretched/pinged a rubber band my waters never leaked right there an then I got up in shock thinking what the hell was that and that's when they gushed everywhere thankfully not on my bed haha ds was born 4hours later. Dd 5 waters went at home breakfast time I generally had no idea if it was waters or I pèed myself as it wasn't a big gush this time but then it happened again a few times so I knew it was waters she was born just 2 hours after.

Cotswoldmama · 28/05/2021 13:45

My first the broke seconds before he was born. My second they broke before o had contractions, although contractions started 30 mins later. I woke up to go to the toilet and I felt odd, it was like j knew they were going to break! They broke in the toilet and then they kept emptying for a while after.

ThisMammaCat · 28/05/2021 17:29

DC1 waters went at 9 pm ish at the start of a 10 hour labour. 40w2
DC2 I think I'd been contracting in my sleep, woke up to a trickle, only just made it to hospital. 38w2

I consider myself really lucky to have had my waters go only at home or hospital 😅
DC3 waters went at tea time ish, baby born a few hours later
. 40w3
DC4 waters went after a few hours of contracting, baby born within 4 minutes of waters going in a spectacular gush. 39w3

PerspicaciousGreen · 28/05/2021 17:31

DC1, I was induced with the pessary and was trotting back and forth to the loo for ages because I was drinking loads of Lucozade and my body also had the traditional downstairs clearout. I was sitting on the loo when there was this colossal KERSPLOSH and this tidal wave descended from my nethers, hit the toilet bowl, and swooshed outwards everywhere. I shouted "OH FUCK" and DH started trying to get the door open (I'd locked it for some reason) and shouting for a midwife.

I have no recollection of what the bathroom floor looked like, but DH assured me it was absolutely disgusting. Midwives came and gave their own screams, checked me, and rushed me upstairs to start pushing!

DC2, I woke up at 7am and lumbered next door to get DC1 up. DH was in the shower so I thought I'd read him a story while I waited. Realised I was kind of sat in something...wet. Is this it? I thought to myself. Two pregnancies...finally, I've pissed myself. Got a towel to sit on. But the "wet" just kept coming. Wait, I thought... Is this... IT? When DH got out of the shower I rang triage and they said to come in and check, but I wasn't have any contractions so it all sounded quite chilled. I put a pad on and it amply absorbed the small amounts of waters that were coming out with gravity. Like having a period, really, but thin and clear. Contractions started about half an hour afterwards.

Sirrah · 28/05/2021 20:28

My first I was in hospital after being admitted for high blood pressure the previous afternoon. I woke at 5am, toddler to the loo, and my waters went all over the ward floor on my way back to my bed. The sister on duty wasn't impressed! I was told to get back to bed and sleep, although I was having strong contractions. Things progressed very quickly, and my daughter was born at 8.25am, 38 +6.

My second was also early morning, about 6am, again after a trip to the loo. I was only 34 weeks though, and contractions didn't get going. I ended up on a drip at about 5pm, and my son was born at 10.10pm weighing a very respectable 6lb 4.

Sirrah · 28/05/2021 20:31

*toddled to the loo

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 28/05/2021 20:36

During my epidural Grin

weegiemum · 28/05/2021 20:47

First time - broken for me

Second time - went with an internal " pop " when I was in bed, contractions started shortly after

Third time - I was induced but they didn't break my waters. They finally went, with an audible pop and a large splash, on the second last contraction, right in the face of the very very keen junior doctor who was taking a look at the time. I laughed dd2 out!

HavelockVetinari · 28/05/2021 21:10

I didn't realise mine had gone, but I thought I was weeing myself all day in small amounts. I had NCT that evening, and just before it was on the phone to my sister (a paediatrician) saying I'd lost control of my bladder. She asked what colour the liquid was - I hadn't a clue, but put a pad on. 60 mins later I rang to say it was clear/slightly pinkish. She told me to stop by the hospital on my way home because it was almost certainly my waters. She was right!
