Waters breaking stories

Currently 31 weeks pregnant with DC2 and I'm wanting to hear stories about how your waters broke🙈

I was started off with DD1 so never got to experience my waters going naturally as they were broken in the Labour ward. I'm excited for everything to go as natural as possible this time but I keep thinking about how and when my waters will go 🤣

Somone told me they mostly go at night time so if this is true I'll be home when it happens but does anyone else have any stories about how and when theirs went?

Thanks all 😁

First pregnancy, waters broke at home 18 days before due date around 4.30 in the afternoon.

I had a stranger in the house at the time who had come to view a drawing board/desk I had for sale. I stood up to fetch a spanner from another room and told him I thought my waters had just broken. He bought the desk and kindly stayed with me until my partner returned from work around 5pm. Baby born in hospital at 6am the following day. Mine broke with a trickle rather than a gush and I continued to trickle for several hours that night until contractions kicked in. Baby rather thin and jittery but otherwise well, despite being nearly 3 weeks early.

@M24L Omg this would be my worst nightmare, how did you remain calm?

I think I was in shock to be honest, and nobody really noticed me standing there in a puddle as they were all busy doing their shopping. And in the car I was trying to persuade my DH to take me home so I could have a bath but he wouldn't hear of it! Luckily, because it all happened pretty quickly once we arrived at the hospital.

BooblePlate · 27/05/2021 10:28

With my first I don’t know when they went, probably in the birthing pool.

With my second few days before due date, I had just got into bed in the evening. I had been uncomfortable and Braxton hicks-y all day. Felt a strong “pop” and went to the loo. I was wearing a pad as I was a bit leaky when sneezing etc at that point in pregnancy and it was soaked and obviously waters. Regular Contractions started immediately. Baby born less than two hours later.

whereislittleroo · 27/05/2021 10:28

I've had 3 babies. With number 1 and 3 the waters broke just before I transitioned to pushing. With my 2nd, I was fully dilated but waters wouldn't break so a Dr popped in to break them. The contraction which came immediately then was the single most painful part of birth for me.

MissingTheMoonlight · 27/05/2021 10:31

As I walked across the car park and into the hospital at 2am!
I think the car park attendant was a bit surprised.
Luckily I had my big maternal pad on already.

DS was very comfortable and still took 2 days to make an appearance after an EMCS.

lazylockdowner · 27/05/2021 10:32

4 babies and every time my waters haven't broken until I'm fully dilated. Baby 1 and 3 water broke as I started pushing, babies 2 and 4 were born in waters and they were popped as head was born, all very fast labours between 10 and 40 mins

mumof23188 · 27/05/2021 10:34

1st baby I had been having contractions and then heard a pop followed by warm liquid leaking out! 2nd baby I was laying in bed, no contractions etc and heard a pop and thought no way ..... sure enough stood up and waters had gone. Contractions started about 15 minutes after my waters went. The pop is amazing!

Peacefulspirit · 27/05/2021 10:43

4 babies and I was on ever aware of them going with #1 as I arrived at hospital. The others all broke as the head delivered.
Is quite like a pop this time but I doubt it will happen!

recreationalcalpol · 27/05/2021 10:44

Felt a bit braxton hicks-y and uncomfortable all day. Decided to walk the dog. Waters popped just as I was about to leave the house. Poor dog was very disappointed.

In hindsight I started contracting immediately after my waters went but I refused to believe that labour was actually happening that quickly, so waited an hour faffing around with my bag / waiting for DH to come home from work before going to hospital. Baby was very nearly born on the A40..

stormelf · 27/05/2021 10:45

With my first I woke up in the night thinking I needed the loo I stood up, felt a pop and my waters broke. I actually googled "have my waters broken or have I wet myself" as I had no other signs of labour. I was exactly 39 weeks and the day before I was in for monitoring for reduced movement where the midwife said the baby wasn't engaged. Contractions started a couple hours later and she was born 19 hours later.

With my second the whole thing went so quickly. I had first contraction and was in an ambulance in active labour an hour later. I told the paramedic I thought I was going to he sick so she passed me a dish but instead of being sick my waters broke. Baby was born ten minutes later. We had only made it ten minutes down the road from my house.

peboh · 27/05/2021 10:48

Christmas Day at 4am, I woke up to go to the toilet. Stood up, and water just burst onto my floor. I was 36 weeks so I'd convinced myself I'd just wet myself 😅 went back to bed, woke up again at 6am, more came out so I rang the hospital who said best to come in just to check. Told dh who thought I was lying (as id told him a couple days earlier we were going to do a test run to ensure we were ready to go if needed)
No contractions or anything leading up. Looking back the only hint I had was that I'd had a funny tummy the couple of days before.

M24L · 27/05/2021 15:40

These stories are great, such a mixture of responses so it just goes to show you that each individual is different. Although some of you speaking about the popping has got me intruiged to feel the "pop" lol.

Mine popped during pushing all over the midwife 😭 I was apologising in between pushes!

Mochatatts · 27/05/2021 15:53

First and second babies waters went after contractions were established whilst sat on the loo. Both were born soon after, both boys. The third, a girl, waters broke in bed around 6am. Went into labour the following day at home and had her as planned at 5.50pm. So didn't follow the previous two but don't know if that was because she's a girl or different partner or 10 years older 🤷‍♀️

Twizbe · 27/05/2021 15:56

Both times my waters didn't break until I was pushing.

With my first it looked like a blood bath. My cervix was bleeding a bit and that mixed with the waters just looked scary.

With my second I was in the pool already and it just went pop as I pushed

LittleRa · 27/05/2021 15:57

DD1- born in the birth pool, I have no memory of waters going so assume they went in the pool

DD2- waters burst all over (quite a dramatic “pop” and then feeling of relief) about 10 mins before she was born, as I was pushing

Lollypop4 · 27/05/2021 16:00

Pregnant witg DC. 2 weeks till due and I was watching Shrek the 3rd in the village hall with my DD and a friend.
Started as a trickle and then within 3hrs the whole amount ( was an insane amount!) had DS 2hrs later

Piccalily19 · 27/05/2021 16:06

3 days before my due date I was getting into bed (after a tiring day of being 39 weeks pregnant 😂) and I felt a small amount of water just as my bum was about to touch the bed, no mass flood. Just like I’d wet myself a bit. Rang the midwife unit and got told to come in and while I was walking round the house and in the car more little bits kept coming out (I had a pad in by this point thank god!). Got sent back home as no contractions yet and at about 3am another much bigger gush flew out in bed. So whole thing took over 4 hours to break properly!

viques · 27/05/2021 16:06

@M24L

Some of these stories are reassuring I think my main worry was it happening in public during the weekly shop or something 🙈 I'm such a panicker so for it to happen in public would really freak me out.

@scarfaceace Omg this would be my worst nightmare, how did you remain calm?

I am sorry to tell you that that happened to my mother. She was getting some last minute shopping in a supermarket when they went in a flood. I was sitting in the car waiting for her , when she came out guess who had to go back into the shop and collect the shopping. Shock I remember it well, a shopping basket next to a pile of rather grubby looking towels the shop had got hold of! I was 13, and horrified.
Goodtohear · 27/05/2021 16:10

Dc1 went at midnight (had been having very mild contractions) - I felt the need to use the bathroom as I got out of bed they burst (all over carpet and mattress).
Dt1 was burst during induction (spectacularly soaked the midwife) & dt2 was born with waters intact.

NatWestPigFamily · 27/05/2021 16:17

With DS1 waters were broken in hospital.

DS2 I was at home walking upstairs to change DS1 clothes when I felt a gush of fluid followed by a slow trickle. Hospital told me to come in to be examined. The Dr who examined me said it was just a small leak and left but she had accidentally broken my waters and didn’t tell me but told the midwife. 10minutes later the contractions started, 4 hours later I had DS2.

NatWestPigFamily · 27/05/2021 16:24

Posted too soon, meant to say there was no sudden flood just a constant flow and the sudden start of contractions.

Eminybob · 27/05/2021 16:30

Ds1 I was sat on the sofa watching telly 3 weeks before due date. I got up at 9pm exactly to go to the loo and felt a pop them a gush. My first thought was getting into the kitchen so as not to ruin the living room carpet! No other symptoms before hand and contractions started exactly an hour later.

Ds2 I was induced and my waters went during a contraction while sat on a bed in the ward.

Both times there was no mistaking what it was.

SpikeDearheart · 27/05/2021 16:30

I have no idea when mine broke. They were still intact when I was examined on arrival at the MLU, and DS was born 90 minutes later without me ever being aware of them breaking. I asked DH afterwards and he had no idea either! I never made it to the birthing pool so you'd think it would have been obvious!

moonlight1705 · 27/05/2021 16:35

Similar to another poster, it was in the hospital coffee shop. I had gone in to be checked and told I was 5cm dilated so they would make up a delivery room for me. I was told to go and grab a cuppa and my bags.

It went absolutely everywhere over the coffee shop floor and soaked their fabric covered chair (why would you have that in a hospital I do not know). Sadly DD got stuck and I was in labour for another 18 hours after before a c-section.

The pop was quite amazing though.
