How have you all managed to get time off for the 12 week scan? I managed to bag a scan in the middle of my lunch break and as I’m wfh so hoping I’ll be less than 15 minutes late from lunch and so shouldn’t be noticed. Might just drop my boss a message that I need to shift my lunch for a very boring reason Grin

swiftt · 23/11/2020 20:00

@PinkPlantCase I’m off on annual leave the week of my scan, totally coincidentally. Was also off by chance the week of my booking app!

BurningBenches · 23/11/2020 20:10

@Penny2020 oh that's fab! So good you get it there and then.

The reason I wrote my results (got side tracked while writing) was I was convinced I would be high risk on age alone, but while I don't at all understand the science, I wasn't high at all.

AnnaPosie · 23/11/2020 20:21

I've been trying to avoid fizzy drinks but sometimes feel like it's the only thing that settles my tummy when really nauseous so I've had a few sips but feel so guilty, I've googled and it just scares me so don't know if I am over thinking it all !

BurningBenches · 23/11/2020 21:01

@Annaposie why not fizzy drinks? I've never heard of that.
It's the only thing that stops me feeling sick, oh and salt and vinegar crisps.

I tend to drink posh ones though like fentimans or cawston and I can't bear sugar free as it gives me a thirst.

lucieloos · 23/11/2020 21:12

Yes same here I don't normally drink much in the way of fizzy drinks but at the moment i really feel I need them to help with the constant nausea and sickness so whatever helps is fine in my book. Also have a thing for sour sweets.

SarahTTC2020 · 23/11/2020 22:19

@PinkPlantCase I just told my boss last week and my scan is Friday. Felt it was easier so I could just be off whenever I have appts, and if anything was wrong after the scan they'd know and it might be easier to have some time off after

Dragonfly92 · 23/11/2020 22:27

@PinkPlantCase I've taken a day's annual leave for mine. Luckily had a few random days left to take this year. Ideally I don't want to tell my work until after the scan.

Scarftown · 23/11/2020 22:29

I booked annual leave for mine too.

Jinglebells87 · 24/11/2020 07:12

Hi @PurpleishDahlia. My private scan was booked after I had spoken with my midwife so didn't affect anything. The sonographer asked me yesterday before the scan if I had had a private one. She just wanted to make me aware that although the private scan was ok, that sometimes things can change so as not to get my hopes up. She was lovely.
Are you worried about not getting a 12 week scan if you have a private one?

PurpleishDahlia · 24/11/2020 09:04

Morning @Jinglebells87 :) I'll be 13+2 at my scheduled scan so I was considering doing a nipt before, at around 11 weeks (I am over 35).

However, as others have said, if you've had a nipt then the combined test is not seen as necessary anymore and the NHS skip it.

I don't want to skip it as I was told by a consultant even though nipt is more accurate for the 3 most common trisomies, the combined test has a value of its own as a diagnostic tool for other conditions, heart defects and preterm labour.

I am in 2 minds, I considered not mentioning the nipt to the midwife but I'm not very good at lying.

Chelsey567 · 24/11/2020 09:10

Hi, I'm due 20th June 😀 first time pregnancy

PurpleishDahlia · 24/11/2020 09:13

*sorry meant to say as a screening, not diagnostic tool

Jinglebells87 · 24/11/2020 11:31

Hi @PurpleishDahlia. I had the combined screening test and am waiting for those results. If I don't feel comfortable with the numbers then I will pay for a harmony test (which I assume is the same at nipt??!). I'm currently 12+6 so don't know it there is a cut off point for this!?!
I am also a bit anxious being 33 this time which I know will affect my score a bit. Just have to sit tight and wait for my results which should be here by the end of the week.

PurpleishDahlia · 24/11/2020 11:50

@Jinglebells87, yes harmony is the same. There is no cut off point for that test so I think I should do the same as you and sit tight until the results of my combined test are ready. With Christmas in the way that will be in the new year now.

I was a bit anxious about finding out something's wrong when I'm too far along and once I've already announced the pregnancy. It is a delicate matter with my MIL as she deliberately turned down all screening that was available back then with all her pregnancies. However I have no reason to believe she would judge me for not doing the same, I'm probably overthinking it.

I hope your test results are all good :)

@Chelsey567 congratulations!

PinkPlantCase · 24/11/2020 13:04

Just had my midwife call, in my area if the combined screening for abnormalities comes back with a high risk they give you an NIPT test on the NHS. So worth checking what your areas does for those who are considering paying.

BurningBenches · 24/11/2020 13:49

@pinkplantcase I'm hoping that's the case in my area too. I think it might be but Google doesn't help.

PinkPlantCase · 24/11/2020 13:56

@BurningBenches I just had a quick google, it looks like Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham and parts of London offer it on the NHS.

lucieloos · 24/11/2020 13:59

@PinkPlantCase that's the case in my area too but because I'm 41 and age plays a big factor in the results too it's quite likely I will get a poor result from the nhs test but by the time all that's been done and then a nipt I could be at least 16+ weeks which would have big implications if we had any decisions that needed making based on the test results. That's my reasoning for having it done as early as possible at 10 weeks. I don't need the stress either of a possible false positive from the nhs test followed by a wait for nipt results. Also 2 of my close friends had things missed on the nhs test which would have been picked up on a nipt and very sadly had to have terminations at 20 weeks plus.

PinkPlantCase · 24/11/2020 14:27

@lucieloos that totally makes sense! So sorry to hear about your friends Flowers

I was just happy to hear that for those of us that aren’t having it early or can’t afford it the only other option to be more sure isn’t necessarily an amniocentesis.

pookypup · 24/11/2020 15:51

Had a private scan and Harmony this morning which was lovely to see a wriggly little baby, instead of a blob! I thought I was 11+3, but they dated me at 12 weeks exactly so I’ve just called to move my NHS scan to this Friday. My original date of 9th Dec would have put me past the 14 week cut off for screening, which I’m keen to still have.

Such a relief after 5 years of infertility to see a baby!

@pookypup congrats! Amazing scan pic too x

PurpleishDahlia · 24/11/2020 16:20

@pookypup good looking kid!

Sorry I seem to be asking everyone the same, but did you tell your midwife you had a private NIPT and did they try to put you off having the combined test?
