I took my phone charger and puzzle books today coz I ended up waiting 4 hours I'll take these with me coz unless she comes early I'm likely to be induced a week early so might have a bit of time to kill before the bad pain starts! Xxx

I hate it when it says failed then posts twice!

BettyBotter1 · 20/07/2020 21:57

Any idea how good the wifi is in hospitals?

FourPlasticRings · 20/07/2020 22:41

Are you guys going to the hairdresser's? Since entering the third trimester I've been wondering if it's safe from a COVID point of view. Could really do with going though!

Spark27 · 21/07/2020 00:03

@FourPlasticRings I went to the hairdressers the other week. My hair hadn't been done since Dec (cancelled my Feb appointment as wanted to wait til after 12w for dye, and then was booked in the week after lockdown hit). My hair is really thick, and was really long and just getting crazy big. Fortunately my hairdressers were offering appointments for vulnerable people on sundays; so just me and the hairdresser in there. We both wore masks and she had a visor on, and there was loads of wiping things down. I only went for a cut to keep time short. There was no way I could have waited until after birth.

If you're worried could you get a mobile hairdresser round to do it in your garden? And still both wear masks?

LexiM · 21/07/2020 00:08

@FourPlasticRings I have a hairdresser that comes to the house and had mine cut on Sunday that they allowed hairdressers to start again. I wore a mask and she also had a visor. She provided throw away gowns and said in order to comply with insurance she had a strict policy to follow including washing all equipment etc between clients. Provided you know the hairdresser is following the rules and the place pretty much empty I would have it done but I guess you have to decide the level of risk you want to take. I also have very thick hair and just couldn't cope with the heat with it long anymore if I didn't have to!

Hi all!

Thank you for the new thread!

Although I'm relatively new to your chats and don't comment/write often... it is so good finding 'companions' with similar issues and thoughts and worries!

Apologies in advance for the super long message...

I'm 26wks now (27 based on size) and I'm considering changing my hospital for birth. My local hospital has improved in the recent years (according to reviews that I've read on line). There were horrific stories up until 10 years ago, with newborns dying, mainly because they didn't recognize early enough stress signs or due to lack of stuff. I tried to research it to see if there are still issues and I've found out that still, probably due to the growing council and luck of resources, there are days were the care is bad. Of course there are other mums that vouch for a great care and experience... so it does vary.

Due to my age, BMI and this being an IVF pregnancy they won't let me pass term, so there is a high chance that I will be induced.

So, I'm considering changing to another hospital 40mts away with better reviews.

Am I crazy? And if I proceed with this how do I go about it? I have my appointment with my midwife next Monday. Do I need to tell her then? Is it already too late now to change hospitals?

I'm very unsure and quite stressed about this to be honest. Have any of you any experience with this? What would you advise me?

Zaalfruit · 21/07/2020 05:15

Eurgh thought I had my sleep back - back to the no sleep. I just want to sleep lots and lots !

@Pineapplemummy2020 I changed hospital - at 20 weeks I self referred and changed to the new hospital they asked me why have I waited so long - ideally they said by 12 weeks however they weren’t mean about it more of a passing statement - give them a call that was my first step maybe explain the situation how you feel distressed about it all . My old hospital was better however - it was way to far it was 45 mins - to over an hour in traffic and the appointments were getting tedious - are you able to self refer to the new hospital , if you feel more comfortable with the other one just apply and see what happens.

Zaalfruit · 21/07/2020 05:34

@FourPlasticRings - a home birth sounds amazing! How does it work in a home birth - I am on the medium to high risk so they don’t even offer it to me .

@Treacle81 try a wax post baby just incase it’s too sensitive now - I love it , I saved to get full body laser however on hold for now till baby is back here and I’m healed.

@Treacle81 glad to hear things are going well x

FourPlasticRings · 21/07/2020 07:22

Thanks @Spark27 and @LexiM. I'll look into mobile hairdressers- hadn't considered that option and my hair is really getting on my nerves.

@Zaalfruit Apparently they need to come and do a home visit before 34 weeks to check the house is suitable and discuss any risks etc, then there's an iron test at 36 weeks to check for deficiencies that could complicate matters and then I get put on the list for attendance after 37 weeks (if I go into labour before that it's a hospital birth for obvious reasons). In my case I need to get a negative Strep B test privately at 32 weeks because I had a positive culture early in pregnancy and if I still have it that precludes a home birth because I'll need IV antibiotics in labour. Are you doing better now? I seem to remember you were having a tough time when I was last on here.

Quiffy · 21/07/2020 07:29

Another new thread!

Thanks for the idea of taking a cardigan with you. I don't own nor do I like dressing gowns so that's really going to help. Great ideas on the room mists as well. I got a really nice travel set on Amazon that instead of empty bottles it has empty squeeze bottles and you can click the heads round to say what's in it. There's also little ointment bottles and toothbrush covers. My Dh already has his eyes on it for when his London trips start again (if that ever happens!).

@BettyBotter1 I'd also seen that on the pillow but didn't want to be a diva that brought a pillow if people don't actually do it 😅

@NWnature being on your back for the 4d scan was a killer. The sonographer helped me rock off as I was like a tipped cow after 🤣

@FourPlasticRings home birth sounds much better in these times, fingers crossed!

@Zaalfruit I read that waxing or hair removal cream isn't good in last trimester as you might get an infection before birth. But that might just be propaganda to have us birth babies like ye olde hairy times. I've also read if midwives needing to shave you a bit if it's a jungle and they can't see 😂 I bought those razors that have the shaving cream built in (Wilkinson intuition) that means I can just woopah around everying without having to see but not being scared of getting cut. Working really well so far!

@LexiM good luck with GTT

@MummyBearBoo glad op went well

@Treacle81 I'm really struggling with toe nails atm, cannot reach at all. Putting on socks is also a struggle 😂 the pedicure is a great idea

@Pineapplemummy2020 I don't have any experience of changing hospital myself but I say go for it. You'll only go into that hospital fearing they do something wrong which will put you on edge straight away so best changing I'd say.

I'm awake but everyone is asleep and a cat has been sick in the kitchen. Because my nausea is still really bad, I can't go into the kitchen as I'll be sick. So I have no drink or breakfast until someone gets up and saves me 😭

LexiM · 21/07/2020 07:31

@Pineapplemummy2020 sorry I dont have any experience of changing hospitals but think you should go where you would feel most comfortable.

Up and ready to leave for my GTT test, I already feel sick so theres no hope for me... gonna be a long morning!!

@FourPlasticRings I had considered a home birth but my husband is like no way. Plus I think our cat would be so annoying and cry when locked out!!

MummyBearBoo · 21/07/2020 08:59

@Pineapplemummy2020 -I changed hospitals last time at 29 weeks but I moved cities don't stress about it though you have a right to choose which hospital you want when i started at my new hospital the midwife called the hospital and they called me with a scan date as they wanted to redo my scans (the hospital I'm under now are much better than the one I was under before) It was different for be though as I was high risk consultant led and the consultant called me to see her in clinic and re-did my scan then.

You could call your midwife or the antenatal dept ask what you need to do to switch! Xx

bluemoon2468 · 21/07/2020 09:17

@FourPlasticRings so jealous of your homebirth plans! I've decided against it for my first baby, but would definitely strongly consider it next time round!

NWnature · 21/07/2020 09:44

@Pineapplemummy2020 I switched hospitals too! Around the 23 week mark I think. It’s totally fine, the new place had to redo my bloods and rebooking questionnaire but other than that it was really smooth. You definitely want to be in the place you feel safest, go for it x

Zaalfruit · 21/07/2020 10:37

Quick question what brand nipple cream did everyone buy- my sister is doing a huge boots / superdrug shop so she said will grab it . Also why are they so expensive !

Zaalfruit · 21/07/2020 10:37

Good luck @LexiM I felt so sick the whole time - and we were told we had to sit and not move which was worse

FourPlasticRings · 21/07/2020 11:21

@Zaalfruit I used lasinoh last time- highly recommend. If you're using disposable breast pads, I'd also go for lasinoh.

@bluemoon2468 I didn't do it for my first either, but with this being my second and with how the birth of my first went, apparently I'm a perfect candidate for it this time around. If I manage to get the green light for it I'll let you know how it goes.

@LexiM The cat is a concern! Particularly because I want to put the birthing pool in the conservatory (tiled floor) and that's the cat's domain usually. I'm still working out what to do with her when the time comes. Good luck for your GTT. Mine was last week and not too bad, thankfully. Hope it's cool enough for you in there.

@BettyBotter1 it might depend on your phone and where you are in the hospital. I had no WiFi at all for my GTT and couldn't get 4G signal either.

BettyBotter1 · 21/07/2020 11:36

@FourPlasticRings thanks for that, it would be a good idea to make sure I have something to watch and some music downloaded just in case then, if I find I've got time to kill if I have to be induced or anything.
@Zaalfruit I've bought the lasinoh nipple cream too after a friend said it really helped her out.
Just had my 28 week app with midwife (at 29 + 4). Baby is head down and bump measuring within the normal range so all good! She's back to back so was hard to get a good heartbeat but midwife said no problem with back to back at this stage.

CharlieBalf · 21/07/2020 12:04

@Pineapplemummy2020 I'm IVF too, BMi and age concerns 😂 I only have one possible hospital as I live in the middle of nowhere but I would expect you might need to change midwives? Is it in the same county?

No one has mentioned a home visit to me yet, should I ask?

And I got my husband to cut and paint my nails the other day... What a palava!
Thanks for the new thread!

FourPlasticRings · 21/07/2020 12:21

@BettyBotter1 I have the activity book for pregnant people from Amazon for just such an occasion. I recommend it.

MummyBearBoo · 21/07/2020 13:45

@Zaalfruit -definitely Lansinoh nipple cream their nursing pads are the best as well IMO the other ones seemed to curl up but the were great!!

So excited now my changing baby and sleep suits arrived!!

I want to use the tatty teddy one for her to go home in if it fits!! Xx
