It’s a goodbye from me, guys. Bad news, MMC. Can’t believe something I didn’t even know about until recently has happened, but it was early days, I’ll be ok.

It’s been fun. I wish you all luck and hope you have healthy babies!

NoseringGirl · 23/04/2020 17:13

@Sakura54 I'm so sorry! Wishing you all the best and I hope you're being well looked after, take care!

Delurking (11+1 here) to say (I'm a trained dietitian), that excess vitamin A is actually very serious - it has to be taken in very large amounts to be dangerous to the baby and you wouldn't get close with your normal diet unless you were scoffing liver constantly. But if you did happen to take too much then (particularly in early pregnancy) it can cause mistakes in what grows into which body part, which can obviously be disastrous. That's why it's not included in pregnancy vits and women are advised against taking fish oils (which usually contain it) or eating liver. On the subject of other vits, we only advise folic acid for 12 weeks (unless there are other underlying reasons for low folic acid which would lead to high doses and whole pregnancy recommendations) and vitamin d for the whole pregnancy. Everything else ends up mostly being expensive wee. (Except added iron or calcium if you are anaemic or known to have bone problems). There has been some early research that suggests taking folic acid for longer than 12 weeks when it's not necessary can lead to increased risk of tongue tie but this has not been fully confirmed yet and so isn't part of the guidelines. I will only be taking folic acid for 12 weeks and vit d for the whole pregnancy, with occasional top ups of liquid iron if I get any symptoms of anaemia. Hope that helps! Relurks

@Sakura54 I'm so so sorry. It's been so nice to read your messages and get to know you a little. I hope you have lots of support around you. Sending you hugs. xxx

seventhrow · 23/04/2020 17:28

@Anothercliche Thank you for this!!!! I am reassured and quite gratified that I've been doing exactly the same thing! Good to hear. Do you listen to the podcast The High Low with Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes? There was an excellent episode called "Debunking Wellness Myths" last August with two dieticians which I really enjoyed. They had a bit of spiel about the difference between dieticians and nutritionists which I think everyone should be aware of!

Pink15 · 23/04/2020 17:30

@Sakura54 I'm so sorry :( you were such a big part of this group we will all miss you xxx

Hello! Placemarking as things move so quickly.

Had my booking in yesterday. It was a bit disappointing tbh - midwife kept putting the phone down to talk to the IT team and have conversations with her colleagues.

Also on the weighing thing ( @seventhrow I think it might have been you who was also a bit unsure about being weighed, sorry if I'm wrong!) she laughed when I explained I've deliberately not weighed myself for 16 years, and don't look when they weigh me at the GP. She then told me that when I get weighed at my scan they'll make me look, which wasn't helpful.

As a result I didn't really feel comfortable talking about MH issues. Do you think I'll get a different midwife for my scan? I don't really want to go back to that one and feel a bit weirdly emotional about it!

Pink15 · 23/04/2020 17:31

@Hancock2020 this is my worst time of day too - sucks doesn't it around dinner / cooking time!

Addler · 23/04/2020 17:31

@Sakura54 I'm so, so sorry Thanks

Wise0wl · 23/04/2020 17:31

@Sakura54 I'm so, so sorry. I hope you have lots of support xx

LozEliza · 23/04/2020 17:32

@Sakura54 so sorry to hear this Thanks

MoreGinPlease2020 · 23/04/2020 17:32

@Anothercliche Thank you for this info! I've just bought a whole load of new folic acid tablets which is typical 😂

seventhrow · 23/04/2020 17:40

@Wise0wl ugh that's really not cool. It wasn't me that was discussing not wanting to be weighed but it might be relevant to me - I was very happy with my booking in weight as it was my nice normal weight but I have NO desire to keep weighing myself throughout the pregnancy. The idea makes me panic and gives horrid dark thoughts. I'm planning on refusing by saying "I look a nice normal weight just with a bump so no you can't weigh me". Obv if I blow up like a balloon this won't work.

It's a known thing that pregnancy can screw with women's heads if they've had weight issues... surely she should have taken it seriously!! I'm really annoyed for you - I know exactly how it feels to have these feelings dismissed as silly or irrational.

You probably will get a different midwife for your scan - they seem to be pooling resources through Covid so the 1st-2nd trimester ladies get a mix of who they see. Maybe raise it with the scan midwife and say that this is a concern and you felt you weren't properly listened to at your booking. x

Anothercliche · 23/04/2020 17:41

@seventhrow I haven't but that sounds right up my street so I'll have a listen!

@Sakura54 I cross posted with you. I'm so sorry, I've also enjoyed reading your posts. Please be kind to yourself

@MoreGinPlease2020 you're welcome! Diet and vitamins are a minefield at the best of times, but very stressful during pregnancy. Just didn't want people spending lots of money on expensive vits unnecessarily or worrying about not taking them all

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/04/2020 17:43

@Wise0wl that doesn’t sound good. I’d have said sorry could you stop talking to other people please, and there’s no reason at all to ‘make’ you look. Very rude. I’d be asking if I could see someone else who took my concerns seriously.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/04/2020 17:44

@Sakura54 so sorry to hear that, do look after yourself x

Wise0wl · 23/04/2020 17:45

Thanks @seventhrow - sorry it wasn't you but thanks for understanding!

I felt a bit let down - I really hope I get a different midwife and will definitely raise it if I do! x

Wise0wl · 23/04/2020 17:46

Thanks @BuffaloCauliflower - it was a bit of a let down especially when it feels like I've waited ages for the appt (was 10+4 yesterday!)

Fouryearslater · 23/04/2020 18:02

So sorry @Sakura54

futuredreams · 23/04/2020 18:05

@Sakura54 I'm so sorry. I've been there. It's awful. Xxxxx

DanceM1 · 23/04/2020 18:06

@BuffaloCauliflower my scan is the same day as yours. How many weeks will you be then? I'll be 14 +2 so I've been really anxious and stressing so have booked a private scan for tomorrow. I'm absolutely terrified but pleased my husband can at least be with me!
