I'm tempted to wait until I get my results - but will be 16 weeks by then based on the 3 week wait time. @wannabebump is that everywhere or just in your area, do you know?

HarrietM87 · 05/05/2020 11:53

@Wise0wl it’s a 7 day wait for my hospital (in London) though they phone you within 3-4 days if you’re high risk.

HarrietM87 · 05/05/2020 11:58

It’s all just a spectrum isn’t it. If you take the view that things can go wrong any time then you may as well tell people as soon as you get your bfp (which lots of people do), or you can wait until after 20 weeks (which equally lots of people do). It’s really personal and just depends on who you’re telling and how you’d feel if you then had to tell them bad news. There’s no right or wrong answer.

SqidgeBum · 05/05/2020 12:08

Exactly @HarrietM87. I told my parents and sister at 5 weeks because I knew the minute something were to go wrong, I would be on the phone to them. I would never not tell them. Therefore I didnt see the point in keeping it a secret. We told everyone else after the scan. Admittedly telling people things have gone wrong is awful, but it can go wrong at any point, so thats always a risk. With a low risk scan, being a low risk age (29), being 13 weeks, and knowing a downs diagnosis would make no difference to me, the risks were low enough for me.

Fouryearslater · 05/05/2020 12:41

Close family and friends know already. We don’t plan on a big announcement, it’s more I don’t mind other people knowing after I’ve had my scan. So those who “need” to know, know. And those are the same people who I’d turn to for support if things did go tits up.

Like @squidgebum, if it turns out I have a t21 child, I have a t21 child. Knowing the risk factor just allows me to be prepared.

Pumpkin108 · 05/05/2020 12:42

Everything went well at my scan, measuring 12+4, due 13th! Wishing everyone else who has a scan today, all the best

@Wise0wl I had my blood taken last weds and received the results first thing Monday morning so depending on your area the wait might not be as long as three weeks. I’m at Chelsea & Westminster hospital in London, though the actual results came from Birmingham Women and Children’s hospital which I gather a number of hospitals use for screening.

Wise0wl · 05/05/2020 13:05

Thanks @60sPony and @HarrietM87

I'm not planning an extravagant announcement, I guess lockdown means that it feels a bit surreal and friends who may have known (e.g. because I'm not drinking) don't.

I've not told work (or anyone except DH), and can't help thinking that we may be close to some restrictions being lifted. It'd be really nice to tell my mum in person!

Wise0wl · 05/05/2020 13:06

Congratulations @Pumpkin108! Smile

Crispaddict99 · 05/05/2020 14:12

Hi everyone, I've been reading these posts for weeks but didn't want to join in until I'd had my scan and knew I wasn't making the whole thing up!

I had my scan this morning and it was amazing! Little bubba was dancing all over the place! I'm measuring 13+1 (I'd calculated 12+3 based on my dates) so new due date is 9/11. Nuchal measurement was 1.7mm. They said the blood test results would be back in 2 weeks (whether low or high risk) so just trying to decide whether to tell my mum now or wait until the results are back (I'm 40). I'm desperate to tell her but my partner thinks we should wait. Meh....

FilthyforFirth · 05/05/2020 14:13

I told my parents and inlaws right away. We had just been told we were likely to need assistance falling pregnant again, and my parents knew this. So it was so nice to tell them. As I told early I was able to tell my dad face to face, though sadly just the phone for my mum.

We told my siblings after an early scan and my two best friends know. But as I suffer with HG it is hard to hide the sickness from some.

Once we get the 12 week scan done we will tell family (mine is huge). No big annoucement, will probably just drop a text in the family whatsapp. I am absent from our weekly quiz and running out of excuses as to why!

SqidgeBum · 05/05/2020 16:46

Question; hubbie is cooking steak tonight. I have been reading conflicting things about being able to have it medium when pregnant. I really hate the idea of a week done, dry steak. What do people think?

Pink15 · 05/05/2020 17:00

@SqidgeBum I think it's probably fine but personally wouldn't risk it as the nhs advise against raw meat so would have it well done. But agree doesn't taste anywhere near as good xD

SqidgeBum · 05/05/2020 17:16

I know on my last pregnancy their pamphlets said medium steak was ok, and runny eggs were a no. Now they say the opposite! It keeps changing. Also midwives seem to say no, while docs say yes. I might try get it just that little bit beyond medium so its not tough as rubber.

MrsR87 · 05/05/2020 17:20

@SqidgeBum

I am a proper foodie as is husband and am basically now banned from eating all my favourite foods! I hate, hate, hate the idea of anything overcooked but this is how I have been prepping lamb/ beef etc ( anything over medium rare to me is overcooked) so well done is just not nice to me. However, even though I’ve never had problems eating it this way. I just dare not risk it!

If we have had a steak I’ve found that buying a better cut makes it much more tender when well done. Also, I’ve taken to slow cooking my joints more often as these are always tender and succulent. So we’ve had a lot more pulled pork/ beef brisket/ lamb shoulder recently.

The first meal I want once I’m allowed is a rare steak with a blue cheese sauce 🥰

Pink15 · 05/05/2020 17:24

@MrsR87 I was surprised my midwife said at my booking blue cheese is allowed! I'd have thought that'd be a definite no no 😂

MrsR87 · 05/05/2020 17:26

@SqidgeBum

I know what you mean with conflicting info!
This is my first pregnancy but even so the info is conflicting! My midwife was like don’t eat pâté, which I love but knew to avoid but then said vegetable pâté was fine but the NHS website says vegetable pâté is not fine!

MrsR87 · 05/05/2020 17:29

@pink15

I was told it was a no no! It’s what I’m missing the most!

I looked in more detail online and from what I can it says hard cheese such as cheddar and Stilton are fine but soft blue cheeses are not!

SqidgeBum · 05/05/2020 17:55

I had it well done in the end, just barely, as despite it being ok a few years ago I would probably worry myself now Sad however, I do remember I wasnt supposed to eat brie or camembert when I was last pregnant, but I did 😕 also I am having runny eggs on this pregnancy, but it was a big no no last time. I do wonder why the advice keeps changing. What was wrong with the 2015 research and advice?

HarrietM87 · 05/05/2020 18:07

So this is probably really silly but I was just looking at my notes from earlier and my NT measurement was 2.2 at 13+4. I think this is within the normal range but on the high side, and also assume that as I’m measuring almost at the end of the screening window by baby size you’d expect it to be bigger?Given that I’ve had a low risk harmony result (less than 1 in 10,000 for all), I don’t need to worry do I?

Pizzamyhart · 05/05/2020 18:32

You can have soft cheese such as brie etc if you cook it. I've been having brie and cranberry toasties, as long as the cheese is steaming it's safe.

Crispaddict99 · 05/05/2020 20:18

@HarrietM87 My sonographer said this morning that anything under 3.5 is considered normal so 2.2 is totally fine. And yes, she said the measurement normally increases with gestational age, so you'd expect it to be a bit higher the closer you are to the 13+6 cut off.

HarrietM87 · 05/05/2020 20:22

Thanks @Crispaddict99 that’s reassuring. I’ve worked myself up into a stress over this - even started a panicked thread about it. I don’t know why I’m so anxious in this pregnancy compared to my last. I wish I could just relax and enjoy it!

Fouryearslater · 05/05/2020 20:38

Is the cheese not down to whether or not it’s pasteurised? I don’t like blue/stinky cheese so it’s not a concern for me! Also veggie so I’ve never genned up on meat either!

The advice on eggs changed because the likelihood of salmonella is minuscule as hens are vaccinated against it (lion stamped eggs).

futuredreams · 05/05/2020 20:49

I'm really missing Spanish deli meats and cold Brie and my favourite goats cheese with a cold glass of Chardonnay 😫
