Hey all.

So yesterday I had a private gender scan (16+5) and they said Boy.
But both nub experts and nub techs said girl.
We have had our heart set on a girl and to be honest, I left the scan a little disappointed (please don’t judge)

But I’ve read girls parts can be swollen?
Has anyone been told ‘boy’ and it’s really a ‘girl’?
Maybe I’m just looking for hope that at my 20wk NHS scan, they are going to tell me girl. I know it sounds silly.

Xx

I've had three friends who were told girl only for it to be a boy, but none the other way round.

It’s quite clear on the potty shot

Avearage · 23/02/2020 08:01

My friend was told she was having a boy brought everything named then delivered a beautiful girl...... They don't always get it right x she found this quite traumatic and actually grieved the baby boy she prepared for Sad

moctodtensmum · 23/02/2020 08:03

Nub theory is guess work. But by nearly 17 weeks you see actual genitalia. There is no way I would dismiss spotting or an actual willy because a few weeks earlier a blurry angle suggested something else.

I am sorry you are disappointed. Sex disappointment is hard and much more common than we are allowed to admit.

Bezalelle · 23/02/2020 08:28

It's a lovely healthy baby by the look of things. Isn't that enough?

bluemoon2468 · 23/02/2020 08:38

The nub theory is little more than guesswork so probably best avoided if you have any great preference either way, and that picture of the genitals looks pretty clearly male to me! So sorry you're disappointed, it must be tough. Yes there's always a very small chance they got it wrong, but I wouldn't get your hopes up tbh, or you're just in for further disappointment at your 20 week scan and on your baby's birth day. For your baby's sake I would try to come to terms with the fact you're having a boy and get excited. Go out and buy some cute boy's clothes. And if you have another, don't bother with the nub theory (unless you really don't care either way and can have a laugh with it!)

sel2223 · 23/02/2020 08:59

What was the gestation at your dating scan as they say the nub can change up to 12+5 anyway..... Before that it can look like a girl but still be rising which means boy if that makes sense.

As others have said though, nub, ramzi, skull theory, old wives tales etc, they're all just a bit of fun and guesswork. You have to take them as that to avoid disappointment like this.

Sonographers do make mistakes but it's rare in the scheme of things and more often than not it's saying girl when baby actually turns out to be a boy. How confident was your sonographer? To a trained eye, a penis is pretty easy to spot and at 16+5, I would expect it to be easily distinguishable from swollen girl bits.

Charlieiscool · 23/02/2020 09:06

It’s a boy. The sonographer saw that and showed you.
Nub expert 🤣

PatricksRum · 23/02/2020 09:07

I would take a step back from the thoughts of the sex of the baby.
Enjoy being pregnant.
And find out on the 20 week scan.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 09:08

I didn't find out. For just this reason. Enough going on in my head without this.

FamilyOfAliens · 23/02/2020 09:09

I’m so pleased we never asked to know the sex of either of ours.

But then we never had a preferred sex anyway.

FeedMeChoc · 23/02/2020 09:11

Nub theory is not accurate. Potty shot isn’t either. But it’s more accurate than the nub theory.

How far along were you in the first pic? Nubs can rise up to 14 weeks.

Potty shot clearly shows a boy.

stairgates · 23/02/2020 09:11

Your 16 week scan shows a clear boy :) Ive just looked at what the nub people have drawn and the lines they are using start inside your baby? Your 12-13 week scan is very grainy and doesnt show a compete nub, I suppose if they have took your money then they have to send some answer back to and by guessing girl they will get it right 50% of the time. Post your nub pic on a few free sites and you will get the answer of incomplete nub from any one with any savvy unfortunately.

But you have a gorgeous little boy on the way :)

Chinks123 · 23/02/2020 09:12

It’s quite clear from the scan that it’s a boy, which is why I never buy into all the nub theories. I posted mine on a thread here for fun when I was pregnant and everyone was wrong. It just adds to disappointment I feel.
Girl parts can be swollen yes but that’s a penis clearly to me.
Congratulations on your healthy baby.

Ughmaybenot · 23/02/2020 09:12

Nub... experts.

Chances are it’s a boy OP. Just hope for healthy, everything else is a bonus.

They will tell you at the 20wk scan, not long to wait now.

Fwiw my brother was told his partner was having a boy several times (health issues meant more scans)... they had a daughter. It’s not impossible but I think it rare for a mistake to be made that way around, especially a repeated mistake.

Iliketonamechangealot9876542 · 23/02/2020 09:12

Nub theory is exactly that a “ theory “

I had the nub theory done as I was intrigued as to the accuracy of it. It was accurate. They said boy, she was deffo a girl at the scan and it’s 6 months old now!

I already knew it was a girl as my bump was diff to my little boys.

You honestly need to take the focus off the gender and on to what the 20 week scan is all about, an anomaly scan. To check whether your baby is growing correctly and is healthy.

Iliketonamechangealot9876542 · 23/02/2020 09:14

Mine should say- it’s WASN’T accurate

strawberry2017 · 23/02/2020 09:15

You can have it confirmed in a few weeks time at your 20 week scan but a scan is more accurate then a theory.
This is why it's dangerous to get your heart set one way or the other.
As long as baby is healthy be happy. X

flower1994 · 23/02/2020 09:51

without sounding harsh I will never understand posts like this. how can you have your heart set on on or the other when you cant pick one either way? and I think to people on this site who cant have kids or who are struggling to conceive it's a major kick in the teeth. before anyone comes for me, clearly the OP had this expectation before she fell pregnant. If that was the case, she should have spoken to someone about these feelings she had about the sex beforehand and how she would cope if the baby was a boy.

that aside, I'm sure you will love your baby when they arrive whatever the sex. look at cute boy clothes/nurseries/other people who have little boys. super cute! and congrats

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 23/02/2020 09:53

When the sonographer asked if we wanted to know sex for DC2 she said she's sure DC was a girl. Until she checked properly and informed us he was a boy, with a side comment of not usually being wrong about it. DS is definitely a boy.

The only people I know who've had a different sexed child we told they were girls and they turned out to be boys too.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 23/02/2020 09:53

Were told, not we told. I have no idea how to sex a child before birth 😂

OhLawdee · 23/02/2020 09:54

Poor baby :(
