@SunStruck where are you living? Here the NHS says runny eggs are fine as long as lioncode eggs as no risk of salmonella with them. I haven’t had blue cheese -but again they say if that’s cooked it fine. One coffees day I think is fine too caffeine wise? I eat cooked ham but don’t like the packet st if f myself.

mouse1234567 · 06/02/2020 06:38

@SunStruck wouldn’t have undercooked meat tho as that’s not recommended on website.

hjbows88 · 06/02/2020 07:44

@SunStruck steak medium is generally a ‘no’ because of risk of toxo (google for nhs guidance).

Coffee is fine - up to 200mg caffeine per day, roughly 2-3 espresso shots (average shop bought Americano has 2).

Ham - not heard this is a problem, it’s just cured meats you want to avoid as they’re not cooked. As long as you cook them you’re fine though, so I had chorizo pasta the other day and dried off the chorizo so was fine to eat.

Eggs - fine as long as lion stamped. Avoid runny eggs if eating eggs from farm shop or somewhere.

Blue Cheese - fine if cooked.

All the info is here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/

kersh33 · 06/02/2020 07:52

I think it very much depends on where you live. I'm in France and we don't have lion stamped eggs (vaccinated against salmonella) so any eggs I eat have to be cooked all the way through. 🙁

On the plus side, all pregnant women here are routinely tested for toxoplasmosis and I am immune so I can have rare meat. To be fair, just in case I've been going for medium steak rather than my usual blue but it's better than the tough overcooked steaks I was having in very early pregnancy!

SunStruck · 06/02/2020 07:53

@kersh33 oh interesting, I didn't know women get tested for that?! Haven't heard of that before. I have cats (indoor though), maybe I need to?

kersh33 · 06/02/2020 08:09

@SunStruck It's just part of the routine blood tests they give all pregnant women, including rubella, syphilis 😲, HIV and 2 of the hepatitises (can't remember which ones!) in France. You could ask your GP (if you're in UK) but I don't think they routinely test over there - my sister and best friend weren't tested I don't think.

It's odd how different health systems can be. If I wasn't immunised for toxoplasmosis, I'd have to have a monthly blood test throughout my pregnancy to check I haven't contracted it so they can treat as early as possible.

The different guidelines between countries always intrigues me. The one that always confuses me is the ban on veggie pate (not that I even like the stuff) - why is that a no?

As a total #firstworldproblem, I've got a work meeting from 10.30-2.30 today, and there won't be a lunch break. Wondering whether it would be disgusting to hide a sandwich in my handbag and then subtly excuse myself to the ladies.

kersh33 · 06/02/2020 10:45

@LapsedVeganAcademic I could not be doing with that! 😱 I'd end up puking all over someone's shoes if I didn't eat.

I would def take something and sneak off and eat it. Unless it was like my last lunch meeting where there were plates of biscuits available. I'm afraid I pretty much munched on them all the way through!
