Sorry I say "I" I obviously mean "we". Got DH on a saving plan too so that we both fund my mat leave and baby kit! Xx

CookieWaffle · 31/01/2019 16:17

We've been looking at maternity pay and it's shocking. Paternity is practically nothing and maternity is just the stat pay for me. Kinda sad really we're not in one of those scandinavian countries where they have it so much better.

EltzBee · 31/01/2019 16:24

@CookieWaffle yep it is a pittance when you then realise you get taxed and national insurance taken off it too. Going to save as much as we realistically can next 6 to 7 months! Under law we do accrue our annual leave though so that's helpful for a couple weeks off extra at the end.
I don't know how ladies can do it when they're on their own.

FivexFive · 31/01/2019 16:31

@sullywifey, I also work for a very small company (10 people) and am the first one to need maternity pay. I'm thinking of being cheeky and asking if I could have some paid time, as it has never come up there before. But I am not hopeful!! Pretty sure I'll just get statutory...

We've been saving for years before trying, so hoping we will cope so I don't have to worry about rushing back... But you never know what will happen, I could end up back within a few months!! Xx

canonlyhopexo · 31/01/2019 17:05

@SullyWifey It's lovely he said you will be hard to replace! Do you feel better for telling?
Maternity pay is pretty poor isn't it. We need to sit and work out our figures.

Scan went really well. Measuring almost a week ahead! Also had midwife app this afternoon. Almost cancelled as felt so rough but so glad I didn't as she managed to find the heartbeat. Feeling very lucky.

EltzBee · 31/01/2019 18:49

@canonlyhopexo glad it went well! How many weeks are you now? That's fab your midwife heard the heartbeat!

canonlyhopexo · 31/01/2019 20:30

@EltzBee I thought i was 12+2 but she's brought me forward to 13. Due date is now 9th August. It was amazing I wasn't expecting it at all but heard it crystal clear x

Crossfitgirl · 31/01/2019 22:28

@canonlyhope we have the same due date now! Mine was changed to the 9th August too! Glad it all went well. Also with the emotions, I cried on the way to work on the day of my scan I was so nervous. Lol.

@zoomies1 where abouts in tenerife are you going? I'm off to Costa Adeje on Saturday!

God, I feel a bit unprepared with money compared to you guys. We both save monthly anyway, but we haven't got a plan for the baby and I'm not even sure how much mat pay i get etc.
Think I better get on the ball!

canonlyhopexo · 01/02/2019 06:46

@Crossfitgirl ah really!? Wonder if we will end up having our babies on the same day haha! I was so emotional all day yesterday and I feel like I'm really paying for it now. I woke up in the night a few times feeling sick and really cold bizarrely and DP just gone to work now and I'm gagging and just generally feeling completely wiped out. I went to the scan and also to the midwife so I had quite a busy day seeing as I've been signed off for a good few weeks so not sure if maybe that's why I feel rough now. We also need to sit down and sort out our money etc. We haven't got much in savings at all - only just finished renovating our house back end of last year and we spent all our money on that not expecting to fall so quickly!

Crossfitgirl · 01/02/2019 07:33

@canonlyhopexo glad it's not just me, we are lucky in that we renovated our old house and made a profit so we do have some savings, but DH is adamant we are not touching it. I am going to have to say well we may need to use some of it as what does he think it's for? Life savings? The future? Exactly the thing people save for babies!
Just got to think though, people get by whatever their circumstances. Some people don't know they're pregnant until 6 months or so! I may contact payroll today to find out how much mat pay I will get etc.
Sorry you're feeling shite. I feel worse today and I'm sure it's because I'm tired. Tiredness def makes it worse, being emotional drains you.

canonlyhopexo · 01/02/2019 07:39

@Crossfitgirl that worked out really well then! I am getting a bit twitchy about money now especially with my sick record, they take that into account while you're pregnant don't they in terms of sickness pay so don't want to go down to half pay in the time bracket that my sick pay is calculated! If you've got savings that you can use should you need to that's an added bonus! I'm just going to take it easy tonight and binge watch some Netflix I think if I can't get myself back to sleep!

AnnaMC214 · 01/02/2019 08:03

Hi everyone. I'm hoping you won't mind if I migrate over here from the ttc thread. I recognise some of the names and it's so nice to hear it's going well for people.

I've been lurking a bit since I got my bfp on Sunday. Today is my 5 week mark so it's very early days. I'm a worrier in general so I'm struggling a bit not to feel anxious it won't be a sticky bean. I have my first midwife appointment in 3 weeks and I just want time to hurry up!

Bettythecat · 01/02/2019 08:47

@canonlyhopexo @Crossfitgirl don't worry about savings- we don't have any either we are just going to save up whilst we are pregnant and as you've said people always find a way to make it work don't they 😊

Welcome @AnnaMC214 we are at the same stage then- I'm also 5 weeks (5+2) but found out a bit earlier than you. Have you got any symptoms yet? This is probably too much information but my Most consistent symptom is an increase in CM which I've had since we conceived and yesterday it felt so wet down there I was sure I was bleeding 😫. Google tells me it's to do with an increase in Estrogen though so apparently totally normal!! Boobs are also hurting a bit more than they have done today. With the anxiety you've just got to choose to try to believe everything will be ok otherwise you will drive yourself mad. Also rememebr that more pregnancies go to term than those that don't do hopefully we will be the lucky ones.

AnnaMC214 · 01/02/2019 09:27

Thanks @Bettythecat. It's nice to have someone who's at the same stage 😊 I've had some symptoms come and go but my most consistent one is sore boobs for about a week now. I've heard of 'the damp' but not experienced it myself. Pretty horrid if it makes you think you're bleeding. I've been super congested and sinusy the last couple of days which I'm praying is just a cold as I've read some people have it the whole way through (I probably need to step away from Google 😂)!

You're so right about trying to stay positive. I'm a control freak and I just have to learn to let go a bit. It'll be good practice for having children! I already feel a bit better and less like a sneeze will cause a miscarriage like I did at first 😂

EltzBee · 01/02/2019 10:52

@Crossfitgirl plenty of people make do so I'm sure you'll be fine no need to panic! We've been saving since we moved house to make sure we have enough set by whatever happens. Thankfully our big purchases for the house are all done now, and we got a newer family car last year so hopefully this year will just be things for Bean!
I started looking at the essentials last week. Can't believe how much prams and things are! We have room to put the cot in our bedroom so I think we will put that in our bedroom and then move it to nursery after 6 months...I'm not sure what most people do?

@canonlyhopexo ive had more time off due to bad morning sickness and nausea and exhaustion too. Some days I can barely function let alone get to work. I keep reminding myself it'll get better soon and trying not to worry about records. Can't help being ill and Bean has to come first. Too precious to risk.

MrsC87 · 01/02/2019 12:13

Just popping in to say I heard the heartbeat today at 16 week appointment and it sounded amazing 🥰
Thinking a boy as it sounded like a train but then the rate was 148 which suggests a girl from old wives tales. We will see next Saturday 💙💗

EltzBee · 01/02/2019 12:45

@MrsC87 ahhh lovely! Ooh you can find out sex before 20 weeks?

MrsC87 · 01/02/2019 12:49

Yes @EltzBee but it would be a private scan. I have heard stories of some midwives/hospital not liking you asking about the sex at the 20 week scan- not sure how true it is. I just can't wait so booked a private, plus I get to see baby next week and at 20 weeks.

OP posts:
Crossfitgirl · 01/02/2019 17:41

@eltzbee @mrsc87 I've booked a private gender scan for 16 weeks. They said accuracy is good at that time. And I booked 4d specifically so i wouldn't need a full bladder! Haha. I'm dying to know what it is! I actually haven't told DH yet as he wanted to wait for the 20 week scan! Hehe.
It was only 40 quid off wowcher at the local clinic I had already been looking at x

EltzBee · 01/02/2019 17:52

@Crossfitgirl wow bargain. I've never used wowcher may have to start looking!

mrsof20118 · 02/02/2019 08:11

Hey ladies just checking in. Been a bit quiet as finally completed on our flat sale and moved into rented for 6 months. Pressures on to find our forever home now.
Nice to know I'm not alone with worrying about maternity pay. Think also stressing about the fact I need to get a bigger car and apply for new mortgage all before baby is due. The housing market is a bit weird at the moment and not much coming on at all.
Anyone else a bit overwhelmed with how to work out how much pay you will actually get post tax and pensions etc? I've heard you can request to spread it out over the length of leave which I think would help rather than getting more at the beginning and nothing at the end. X

EltzBee · 02/02/2019 09:33

@mrsof20118 hopefully you'll find something soon. What area are you in? At least no chain below you now. Have you any new builds near you? Try not to stress the right house will appear especially with Spring around the corner.

I did a budget when we moved in 2017 and factored in one salary and part time salary and thing's. I work for a American company so maternity pay isn't something they really understand. Work your numbers out on worst case scenario and anything better is a bonus.

10 week's today eek.

FivexFive · 02/02/2019 11:27

@mrsof2018, fingers crossed you find something soon. I know what you mean about the market right now, not much about. But now you're renting it means you have no chain which strengthens your position!

We are making some notes ahead of the first midwife appointment on Monday; questions we want to ask, some medical history in case she asks etc, especially mine as I had a few problems when I was younger. I have a lot of scar tissue from previous surgeries and I remember a Dr years ago mentioning if I was to have kids, it's likely I'd need a c section... Not sure if this will actually be the case, but will definitely be asking so we know what to expect.

mrsof20118 · 02/02/2019 11:58

@EltzBee south west between Bath and Bristol. We did look at new builds before but none in quite the right area here. But right on the no chain it should put us in a strong position.

EltzBee · 02/02/2019 12:22

@mrsof20118 ah cool. I'm a Wiltshire girl be till we moved 18 months ago, lots of building there still. Bath is so expensive we were 20 minutes away and just crazy. Kind you it's been that much where we are now too. You will find something keep positive and searching. We found our house after it had fallen through and was meant to be I think.

@FivexFive good idea on writing questions down we have our appointment on Thursday and should probably do the same.

What kind of family history questions do they ask does anyone know?

Lazy day today as roads out aren't nice solid ice and snow.
