If we can't be positive about the weather what can we be? Grin

@Lifeofpies and @zaalitje, I'm nearly 18 weeks. It was actually a gender scan, not a 4D one. However, the place we went give you a sneak peek in 4D, then there's the option to buy a 4D pic afterwards. We couldn't resist that one!

My only niggle was that she said my placenta is low. She said it's very common though (4 women before me today had the same thing) and resolves itself in over 90% of women. If it doesn't, it'll be something called placenta praevia. I'll just cross that bridge if I get there (still can't bring myself to say when!).

@Lifeofpies Congrats on your little boy Smile.

MsJuniper · 17/02/2018 15:33

Oh wow @Flatwhite32 and @Lifeofpies - what fantastic news for you both. Such a relief to hear the heartbeat isn't it, for some reason I find that even more emotional than the images on screen. Great to see your little people thriving in there.

I've just been doing a nice-but-scary job: going through the boxes of DS's baby stuff we have kept hidden away in my "Miss Havisham" cupboard for the last 5 years. It felt so strange to see the newborn clothes again and think about them being worn.

yellowfrontdoor · 17/02/2018 15:34

@Flatwhite32 yay! So pleased for you!

@Lifeofpies congratulations!!

All these scans make me want to find out too.... must resist!!!

Lifeofpies · 17/02/2018 15:51

Oh juniper, well done on being ready to tackle that. I hope it’s feeling good. You’re spot on about the hb, that’s nearly all I cared about, I got the sonographer to focus on the heart for a bit and she did a print out of the rhythm for us. I didn’t even twig that it had become a bit of a fixation after past experiences of ‘I’m sorry I can’t find a hb...’

Thank you for the congratulations everyone X

zaalitje · 17/02/2018 16:13

flatwhite we had our gender scan just before that, a 4d peek was also included but my bean looked far less human!
I'm 25 weeks now and hoping for one between 27 and 32 that will look more like a baby!

LisaSimpsonsbff · 17/02/2018 22:14

Congratulations, flatwhite and lifeofpies! So lovely to hear such good news from you both. And well done on facing a scary task, msjuniper - I'm really glad that you're starting to feel ready for that kind of thing.

yellowfrontdoor I'm also getting scan envy (which is a nice change from scanxiety!). Less than two weeks to my 20 week scan, so not too long to wait - terrified of bad news but really hoping for some reassurance.

keeponrunning85 · 18/02/2018 18:59

I know this is silly, but did anyone else struggle with stopping taking their folic acid after their dating scan? I've been taking it so long now that I seem to have become rather attached to it! I know I don't need it anymore and also that it won't do any harm.

MsJuniper · 18/02/2018 19:53

I've carried on with the pregnacare but haven't been taking it every day. I've been taking their tablets so bloody long now they should give me some kind of award.

My midwife said to stop taking it at 12 weeks, so I did.

Lifeofpies · 18/02/2018 20:35

I’ve stopped because I was taking it as high dose folate, but am now taking a multivit (the pregnacare liquid) which I imagine has it in. Are there risks? The only potential link I’ve ever heard of is with tongue tie (think there’s growing evidence for that and was mentioned when DS had his cut).

keeponrunning85 · 18/02/2018 20:40

I don't know of any risks. I just take bog standard folic acid. I did try Pregnacare preconception once way back but it seemed to mess with my cycles and make my pre-AF spotting start even earlier. foxtrot I don't know if it is any different if you are on higher dose but as far as I am aware the standard adviceis to just take it for the first trimester.

Eastend2015 · 18/02/2018 21:11

I took the higher dose all the way through with DS as I have epilepsy and was advised to do that. I think you just pee out anything you don’t need so i’m not aware of any risks.

BertieBotts · 18/02/2018 22:08

NHS says it's not risky to continue. I've stopped because I never remember anyway Blush

Detailed early scan tomorrow which should be a bit more detailed and is specifically looking for issues. Then karyotype results Tuesday. I feel like after that fingers crossed we can say this is a normal pregnancy.

Smurf123 · 18/02/2018 22:44

I've kept taking it... Now at 35 weeks my daily tablet routine involves... Folic acid, vit d, 75mg aspirin, iron tablet and omeprazole for acid reflux.. Followed up with weekly b12 injections .. Don't think I've ever taken so many pills on a daily basis.

MsJuniper · 18/02/2018 22:52

I'd never heard that about tongue tie. DS had a tt which wasn't diagnosed until 11 weeks old.

BertieBotts · 19/02/2018 06:44

I have but I thought it was just a theory.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 19/02/2018 09:24

I'm still taking Pregnacare too - like MsJuniper I've been taking it for so long (since May 2016, I think!) that I think I should get some sort of loyalty discount! I'd never heard of any potential downside to keeping on it either - and I'm a bit reluctant not to take a multivitamin at all (I took one a day even before TTCing), and the pregnancy ones all seem to have folic acid in.

Best of luck for scan tomorrow, Bertie

Ekphrasis · 19/02/2018 09:32

I saw this folic acid tt link a lot on mn last year and was confused as I thought that tt was actually linked more to 'midline defects' which is why we take folic acid. (Spina bifida etc)

Tt can be genetic and is linked on the fathers side - my son had a posterior tie which left his tongue a little restrained and a high palate (caused by lack of movement by the tongue) which makes it harder maintain a latch. I can clearly see my Dh has exactly the same tongue and it has a slight v when he sticks it out. My son's was cut at around 11/ 12 weeks too MrsJ.

This article explains the other possible cause of tt, with folic acid but it's not caused by folic acid (article explains it better!) I do know midline defects have been identified as common in families who have this gene and successfully treated with folate.

Also, I imagine the tongue structure develops during the first trimester, when we are all taking folic acid.

There's no issue continuing to take it; my mw explained that many prenatal vitamins are v expensive so they let women know when they can stop buying them. In reality, with a broad ranging healthy diet, eating the foods recommended by the nhs, you only need folic acid and vit d, and then only vitamin d (cos we're sun starved!)

I took pregnacare throughout my first pregnancy and most of this though I've been less consistent!

Lifeofpies · 19/02/2018 09:58

That’s very interesting, ekphrasis, thanks for linking. DS has a tt - I asked for an assessment before he was discharged so luckily it got sorted pretty quickly, though he never managed to feed without nipple shields (but he was tiny). Would always recommend people request a check for tt before they leave hospital. It was the mw who specialised in cutting who mentioned it to me.

Good luck today, bertie, and anyone else with appointments or scans today.

BertieBotts · 19/02/2018 11:02

Scan was amazing! So much more detailed than any I've had before and the doctor explained everything in detail :) everything looks good but they can only rule out about 30% of issues at this stage.

Lovely news bertie! Fingers crossed all continues to be so for you. The relief is so lovely isn't it!

That's good life. A lactation consultant spotted mine and a gp referred us to the hospital. It's pretty common but not commonly treated now. It's probably the main reason many women give up feeding. The lactation consultant tried to find an image of what a 'normal' tongue looked like on google images for me and couldn't find any! The hospital consultant didn't class my son's as a proper tt but did agree to do it as id seen the lactation consultant (she volunteers to run our local lll group but does now charge as she's so popular) and the change was noticeable. I didn't need to use cream any more, the latch was deeper, no clicking, but it took a few more weeks before I could feed him without lying down!

I'll be armed to the hilt with info this time!

Lifeofpies · 19/02/2018 11:28

bertie that’s wonderful news, so glad it was a good scan. You just walk on air afterwards hey?

So many people I know struggled too, ekphrasis - i loved breastfeeding but understand why people don’t/can’t stick with it. Like you I’m going to be armed with more info and contacts for groups/consultants this time. I really had to push them to check DS before we were discharged (he was syringe/cup fed to start with and we hadn’t managed to bf) but glad I did. Really hope it’s straightforward for you this time.

AKP79 · 19/02/2018 11:40

Hi ladies

So lovely to come on here and see positive pregnancy news, scans and updates. It's great :)

I'm 19+1 today and my anxiety is sky high, I'm not sleeping and can't concentrate at work. I think it's because of the looming 20 week scan next Monday. I'm so scared it's going to be bad news.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 19/02/2018 12:07

Great news, bertie! So pleased to hear it went well for you.

Feeling pretty similarly, AKP (mine's next Wednesday) - having a calmer day today, but always find it's particularly bad over the weekend, maybe because I'm less distracted. I'm sorry you're feeling so worried, and hope the next week goes really quickly for both of us!
