I thought I would start a new thread because we finally passed the 500 post mark.

This is a pretty quiet thread - I think too many of us have been moving house. Our move is well and truly over (thank heavens) - well at least for the short term, we still have the small matter of emigrating in November with an 8 week old and a 3 year old which should be a barrel of laughs...

Otherwise I am bumbling on nearly 31 weeks and actually feeling ok despite no sleep, spd type pain at night and lots of time at the hospital because DS2 is so big and needs constant monitoring.

How are you all doing - time is flying we'll be doing birth announcements soon...

Sounds promising Podmog!

I had my sweep today whihc was actually a tad painful or should i say uncomfortable and she couldn't do it (after a few minutes or prodding about up there) as my womb wasn't open but my cervix had thinned which is good apparantly but i was gutted to know a sweep couldn't be done but when i got home there was a pinky brown discharge in my knickers (sorry for graphic details) but it didn't seem like what i thought a show would be as it was just some discharge but any slight resemblance to a show is great i think although they said this was normal after a sweep but i thought my sweep was unsucessful??!! Tres confusing...

Anyway Friday I go in for pessarys and water breaking and all manner of grim things i didn't want so I'll actually be in hospital for a few days BEFORE giving birth which is not ideal so no amenity room for me as we couldn't afford 5 nights or whatever it ends up and DH and I have only ever spent about one night apart in pur whole relationship so sleeping alone form him will be so wierd and scary but hey ho, thats life it would seem - God i am praying that baby comes in the next 48 hours but no backache or period pains feelings, hopefully my tearfullness was a sign!

How is everyone today?

Lolabelle - wondering whether your sweep has had any effect now? I had one with my first dd and it did work - had it late afternoon and had some light bleeding afterwards (think that's normal, like having a smear), then mild period type cramps all night and my contractions started the next morning (and I bled lightly from then on throughout my labour, so suppose that was a show). Like you I wanted to avoid induction and was also just over 41 weeks when I had it. Fingers crossed for you.

Congratulations to Dejags by the way - so nice to hear a positive birth story as well(especially at this stage when I'm starting to get panicky about the idea of labour again)!

Podmog, hope things happen for you soon - does sound like something's going on with your backache and pain.

Lolabelle · 08/09/2004 19:10

Well apparantly the sweep didn't work because my womb wasn't open but she moved the cervix forward whihc may help a tad but no signs of anything and i just know i am going to end up going the whole hog - its quite scary as its my first experience of pregnancy etc and i always expected to have the whole waters breaking naturally and rushing off to hjospital instead of packing for my stay and knowing it'll all kick off there and the fact DH will be called but not actually with me all the time as he would be if we were at home this weekend - I am willing this baby out but no backache or anything and i'm starting to lose faith plus was up all night in tears due to dental pain so went to the dentist this morning who said i need root canal surgery as soon as i possibly can after the baby is born and has prescribed a course of antibiotics so everything is shite at the mo!!

God Podmog I hope you are luckier and your little one comes naturally as i have a very strong feeling i'll be driving off to the hospital friday night and i feel so tearful thinking about it and when DH has to leave me there i know i'm going to break down as i'll feel so alone as its a lot to take in, i feel really scared now and hope something happens quickly...

Hi Lolabelle

I tried to get in touch via Contact Another Talker but I understand that you haven't agreed to use that facility. So thought I'd quickly repeat what I had said in my e-mail last night...
First of all as you probably know (especially if you read lots of Mumsnet) you do not need to GO for the induction when they tell you to.... you can opt - it is your right - to have a scan every other day or so at 42 weeks... if placenta and amniotic fluid are good then an induction can wait! An induction on a woman who is not ready can be very difficult not just in terms of pain but quite importantly in terms of progress.... the number of time I have said this and been ignored and then the mum had a section and said after that she wished she had listen or believed this was a real possibility....... an induction does not mean baby is in your arms in 12 hours.... it may be a hell of a lot longer than that unfortuantely. It seems that your cervix is not ready.... sometimes it's alla question of how ready you really are to have this baby. It can be as "simple" as have you got names picked out? Are you worried about labour (heard plenty of scary stories) ? Baby's room ready? Fear of not being able to cope with a baby? Fear of you not being sexually attractive after the birth ?
AT 41 weeks many women have not had their baby yet so this may be completely norma and don't read into my post anything alarming... it is only food for thought.

There are things you can do to help you get going... visualisation, talking to baby, reflexology would help if you will go for an induction as it gets your hormones going, certain homeopathic remedies I have seen do wonders but I would not advocate caullophyllum on someone who is NOT already in labour. If you are into homeopathy I am happy to make some suggestions but I would prefer to do it off mumsnet.
You can contact me via my website .

littlemel · 09/09/2004 16:21

Lolabelle I hope that you are feeling a bit better and that it happens naturally for you before you may have to be induced.
I am 40 weeks +2 and got referred yesterday by my midwife to the day unit as she was concerned about me feeling less movements of late. they monitored me & said that everything was fine but as I didnt actually feel any of the movements during the ctg the doctor said they wanted to do an internal to see how redy I was for induction & if ready to induce me in the morning. the internal was really really horrible, as you said, it really hurt, and then was told that cervix not ready & she didnt do a sweep. but they still made me stay in overnight which i do not understand as i really didnt want to & not been away from my partner before at night was really upset but not v good at standing up for myself. no-one even came to see me til 9am this morning and the other ladies on the ward all seemed to be having it rough, one of them was having really bad contractions & screaming to be traken to delivery suite & have an epidural to which she was told that she was fine and she should cope!!
has really put me off now and although it sounds awful to say i just do not want to give birth!! like you i dont want to be in hospital before it happens. never having s*x again!!
so anyway i hope you manage to make it before fri. good luck!!

congratulations dinny x

Lolabelle · 10/09/2004 10:20

Thanks Littlemel for reassurring me I am not the only one who is getting pushed form pilar to post without really knowing what i should do and Pupuce thanks so very much for your post as its very helpful and has given me some questions to raise today with my midwife and i will go on your website straight after this but right now i am terribly excited as i am waitiing for DH to come home as i am 99.99% sure my waters have just broken and they want me to come in to discuss maybe putting off the induction!! DH is coming home to take me as he is so concerned the contractions will start when i am driving there and back as its a fair drive and i am a bit like niagra falls down there at themoment and am contemplating using one of babies nappies instead of a pad!!

I will pop on your website anyway as i have an hou8rs wait until DH gets here but fingers and toes crossed that this starts naturally..

Littlemel did you read Pupuce post as well?? You seem so near to you term date that i would be pretty upset at having to stay in, i think however hard it is to stand up for yourself please try as i feel completely different today and won't let anyone try and induce me kmnow unless its completely medical and necessary so wish me luck and HOPEFULLY the baby will make an appearance this weekend (although please not tomorrow due to 9/11 date..!)

Thanks ladies and i'll post as soon as i know anything..

Thanks Lolabelle
Good luck....sounds like it could be happening to you now then, so fingers crossed! I know what you mean I was thinking the same about giving birth tomorrow due to the date....but I suppose they come when they are ready!!
Havent read the link, but will definitely have a look now. Thanks for the advice and best of luck...let us know! x

pupuce · 10/09/2004 14:23

Lolabelle - how exciting!
If your waters have broken and indeed it sounds like they have.... please be INFORMED that they shoudl not perform an internal examination and you can wait up to 96 hours before being induced.... you may well start contracting on your own before that !!! Good luck :-)

Lolabelle · 10/09/2004 16:58

Well just got back and have delayed induction until Sunday evening as waters have indeed broken and i am leaking constantly but don't care as i am so chuffed!! They monitered me and i am having very subtle contractions but nothing to worry about and i am in the very early stages of labour and so i asked to give my body a chance to do it itself to which they agreed and so Sunday they said they would do another sweep and then if not then they would keep me in and maybe the horrible 'drip' word will be mentioned but its a long way off so i am not going to panic just yet as i am feeling quite subtle period like pains now and seeing as i have had a show and my waters have broken AND i am now feeling my very very mild contraction like period pain things!! She said i haven't dilated yet but i am so very near that stage (or should i say my cervix is) that i am confident this babe will come out on his own accord!!

I felt quite strong willed about what i wanted and didn't want and i feel better for the outcome now so thanks Pupuce and LittleMel don't give up hope and try to be firmer as it does seem to get things moving in a happier direction - leaking like a good'un now though and feel quite anxious/excited so have bought some gorgeous food for dinner tonight in the hope its my last meal at home before labour (any excuse!), dribbled my way through M&S with absolutely no shame but it was worth it!

Fingers are crossed for you Littlemel and Podmog...X

littlemel · 10/09/2004 17:07

Thats brilliant news Lolabelle, I am really pleased for you, and I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you! I think that you will do it on your own though....I have a feeling!! I think its really hard when it is our first times, as like you have said on an earlier post, you think everything is going to be so straight forward and you will be getting your bag together during your contractions and going to the hospital all excited, and then when things dont go as planned it really throws you and you dont quite know what to expect!
i will definitely try and put off induction for as long as possible, so thanks for the advice. its nice to know that someone else seems to have managed to be successful! good luck for the birth as I think it may happen for you very soon!!! how exciting x

pupuce · 10/09/2004 17:15

Littlemel.... it is YOUR body and YOUR baby... they can't force you.... not all MWs are using evidence based midwifery and can also bully you.... if you know your rights and the pros and cons.... then you can decide for yourself!
As I have said they are not going to send the police to send you to the induction room !

pupuce · 10/09/2004 17:16

Good luck Lolabelle.....

cazzybabs · 10/09/2004 21:11

Pupuce thanks for all your info about avioding induction - have a few weeks to go but as i was so late with dd am sure it might be a possibility this time. Luckly I avioded it last time due to a very supportive midwife but I didn't know you could refuse it and just ask for extra monitoring.

dinny · 10/09/2004 21:47

Good luck to you all - hope things are underway for you now, Lolabelle. Thinking of you all. xx

dinny · 10/09/2004 21:57

Just quickly, to those trying to get baby to hurry up - my midwife did a reflexology session on me the morning my ds was born. Convinced that started my labour that evening. Worth a try (and feels so nice too).

littlemel · 10/09/2004 22:14

Thanks pupace - the thing is though that my babys movements have really slowed down and sometimes I will only feel 2 movements in a day - which was why they wanted to induce me on wednesday at only 1 day overdue. When I get put on the ctg they say everything is fine, but that they are worried bacause I cant actually feel anything. So I am worried that if I go in again due to lack of movement, they will want to induce me, and if I don't agree that I will be putting the baby at risk by not doing so. I wouldn't mind having a c-section but I cant see that simply not liking the idea of being induced would be a valid enough reason for that to happen

littlemel · 10/09/2004 22:15

sorry - meant pupuce! cant spell

pupuce · 10/09/2004 22:17

Still feel few movements now ?

littlemel · 10/09/2004 22:34

Yeah, I have felt about 4 movements all day today. A midwife mentioned (although i dont know how relevant this is) to me on weds that the placenta is at the front. Have tried a very cold drink and some icecream but that didnt do anything - but had a bit of a prod earlier and she shifted about a bit

pupuce · 10/09/2004 22:37

At the end of the day you need to do what's best for you and baby... I would have thought a scan would confirm how the placenta, baby and amniotic fluid are... hospitals tend to only do monitoring....
