I thought I would start a new thread because we finally passed the 500 post mark.

This is a pretty quiet thread - I think too many of us have been moving house. Our move is well and truly over (thank heavens) - well at least for the short term, we still have the small matter of emigrating in November with an 8 week old and a 3 year old which should be a barrel of laughs...

Otherwise I am bumbling on nearly 31 weeks and actually feeling ok despite no sleep, spd type pain at night and lots of time at the hospital because DS2 is so big and needs constant monitoring.

How are you all doing - time is flying we'll be doing birth announcements soon...

Hello, Dejags. Well done on the new thread. Where are you emigrating to?!

I'm 32 weeks - have my 32-week antenatal tomorrow. Weird feeing as that was the last antenatal app I had before dd was born. Really want this one to stay put.

A friend said today she couldn't believe how huge I am. Thanks a lot

Feel Ok - tired though, dd keeps getting up at 5 am. Bloody light sunny mornings gggrrrr.

How is everyone else?

dejags · 12/07/2004 12:39

Hi Dinny,

We are off to Cape Town on 1st November. A big change but a 6 bedroom house with nanny and cleaner awaits so I can't wait to say the least.

Well I am 31 weeks but measuring 35, the baby is encroaching the 100th centile but they generally dont change dates this late in a pregnancy. I have had every test known to man to find out why and am going for another scan soon to see if he is still growing (I think I know the answer to that one as he is attempting to break free as I type ).

We do know that I won't be allowed to go past my due date (12/9) but there is no way of knowing if this little man will come early - I'll make sure my hospital bag is ready by 34 weeks just to be on the safe side.

Glad to hear you are well - sometimes I don't think non-pregnant people appreciate the fact that there is a human being in your tummy, hence the insensitive remarks about size. I am normally quite slim so I think people find it even more amusing/shocking to see such a big tum...

Only 9 weeks to go...

wow, Dejags your move sounds very exciting! Just in time for some winter sunshine.

I've had a couple of wierd days where I feel utterly tearful and depressed - usually in the run-up to seeing the OB, hmmm. Not good as I start seeing her every 2 weeks now. Do they do anything extra (as opposed to urine and BP)? She's already got DH doing my BP at home as she can never get a normal reading. Mayber I can persuade her to give me some dip sticks and skip the next appt.

Done my birth plan as well! Dh is being a bit of an interfering doctor-type wanker though. "Darling, I really think a bit of sedation before you go to theatre is a good idea" Hello, WHY?????????

Or (this is the best one) - I've stated no formula and no heel pricks for glucose in the first 72 hours (should be out by then anyway). Dh said (in his best patronising voice) "Do you really think you know better than the professionals what's best for the baby?" Oh dear, felt like showing him some of the BF posts! And when I told him there was no way I was taking iron if my Hb was down a bit, but the MCV was normal. Actually, I feel quite upset by his complete lack of support. I wish he could be a DH instead of a doctor. I'm starting to feel like I can't rely on him to back me up if the poo hits the fan - his default reaction is to bow down to his colleagues. He doesn't understand how midwives can give you bad advice.

Anyway, sorry to rant. MN officials - we need a wobbly chin logo!!

Does anyone feel utterly terrified at the thought of looking after a baby? I'm so worried that I'll have no idea what to do I'm really enjoying Canada, but I'm feeling really homesick now - wish my friends were here. Must make determined effort to go to mums and toddlers groups

highlander · 13/07/2004 00:24

yikes, soooooo sorry, didn't mean to go on like that

blossomgirl · 13/07/2004 01:52

Hello we've changed to a night time internet and im usually zzz by ten, poor old thing!

Really glad to say we should have the keys to our new house next week, went inside for the first time today decisions having been made in my absence. Bit wierd wondering which room we are going to meet this little person in for the first time.(homebirth fingers x)

Been thinking of getting a t-shirt done with blossomgirl on it to see how many mumsneters wander aroung this city. (and might say hello!)Went to a yoga for pregnanacy class and felt sure if i'd had it on would someone would have known the meaning. Came away relaxed but quite ed...lordy respect to some of those bumps.

Good luck in the Cape dejags i lived there for a few years. Was windy today, just like C.Town in Nov. lovely!

Dinny, i've just started saying "yes I am arnt I, lovely little baby" and pat tum when those on the outside comment on our size. How did your 32week go?

x to everyone, blossomgirl

blossomgirl · 13/07/2004 01:56

oh sorry highlander meant to say didn't think you went on, you sound very well informed. How long have you been in Canada?

highlander · 13/07/2004 04:40

blossomgirl - the t-shirt idea is fab

cazzybabs · 13/07/2004 11:48

I have my 28 week appt today - but I have completly forgotton how many weeks I am. I really don't care - just wish the baby would come now so I can start bf and lose the weight of my thighs!!! Only two more days of school until my 8 week holiday! HORRAH!!!!

Dejags how come South Africa? - its somewhere I have always wanted to go.

Anyway must go and find my maternity notes. Hope everyone else is OK.

jacksmumto1 · 14/07/2004 17:06

Dinny - sorry to hear about the Group B strep.... have you been able to talk it over with your midwife? When I had the high AFP results, I found it very helpful to see the midwife "out of clinic" hours to chat about the results and to help get things clear in my mind. Hope all goes well for you.

dinny · 14/07/2004 17:29

Hi everyone.

Had my 32-week app. All OK - except they did swab for Strep B as I can't shift this damned thrush. Hope it's neg as it can affect chances of homebirth.

Dejags, lucky lucky you is all I can say!

DD is very unsettled and clingy at the moment - feelign insecure about the new baby I think. Feel like I'm betraying her in a way.

Can't wait to go on a diet after the birth! Determined to shed this lard!

Blossomgirl- fab T-shirt idea! Where do you live? Have forgotten.xx

jacksmumto1 · 16/07/2004 11:52

Hi everyone!!! Good luck to all those with imminent house moves!

Feeling very uncomfortable today - can I really stretch any more?!

I'm very curious to know what all these babies are going to weigh! At my 28 week scan, baby measured "only" at the 50th centile but that doesn't mean much to me in regards to actual weight - have another scan at 33 weeks (week on friday I think it is...) so I shall see if the consultant can give me a better idea!

Agree with everyone wanting to get some weight off - I feel huge - I don't just mean the bump but my thighs and bum too... . Please let it come off quicker than last time!

Anyone got names sorted yet? We are STILL arguing!!!

costamum · 16/07/2004 12:38

Hi everyone...... yeah, we're still not having much luck with names either!!!! I'm back in Spain now (was on holiday in France) and its getting scarily hot! I'm dreading August. Just had a scan too and everything appears to be fine! My next one is not till the end of August though - bit of a long wait for me that is!!!

Hope everyone else is keeping well!

dejags · 18/07/2004 00:38

Hi everybody,

Well we have lift-off on a name, at long last DH and I have settled on a name we really like. We have agreed to keep it a secret though - so another 9 or so weeks to find out.

Had my 31 week midwife appointment today - my belly is growing nicely but has slowed down - I measured 33 weeks at 31 weeks so not too bad. The baby is fine and is already 4/5 engaged which is good news. We have another growth scan and consultant appt next week - bad news is, is that my midwife think the cons will want to go with a GTT to triple check that I am not diabetic because our young man is rather large... I believe it's quite unpleasant so holding thumbs he doesn't think it's necessary.

Anyway, hope you are all well.
Dejags

PS: I am on holiday from tomorrow for 2 weeks and 3 days and then on maternity leave. Can't believe that it's my last day in the office.

I feel a bit lazy giving up work so early but with DS's nursery run it would be a four hour round trip to work and I don't think I could cope with that....

Yippppeeee

Hi, there, I am feeling v low tonight as have found out today that I carry Group B Strep and am being advised not to have a homebirth.
Just praying everything will be Ok and it won't pass to the baby in labour. Have really scared` myself reading about it on the net.

blossomgirl · 19/07/2004 02:01

so sorry dinny, x blossom

ja9 · 19/07/2004 15:00

Hi everyone

I've not posted for a while - been off on holiday, but it was good to read how you are all getting along. I'm 32+5 now and am feeling enormous! I'm so glad that i have finished work (am school teacher and our hols started 3 weeks ago ) cos i don't know how i would manage otherwise.

We're also moving house... what is it with us all - as if this wasn't a hectic enough time in our lives. We're leaving Aberdeen in 2 weeks time to go to stirling about 2 hours drive away. As if that wasn't stressful enough, the house we are heading for won't be ready for us until the beginning of September so we will be in temporary accommodation for August. Baby due 10 Sept...

I had my head around this and was very chilled about it until about half an hour ago when i tried to book in with a doctor in Stirling, as that needs to be done bfore the hospital there will book me in for the birth. Now it appears, that i not only have to move house twice, but also will have to move doctors twice as you have to register with the doctor whose catchment area you are in and the two houses i will be living in in the next couple of months are in different catchments! AAArgh . I am very cross.

Sorry for having such a rant.

A few of you mentioned BH. Its funny, because i was very aware of them when i was 16 - about 22 weeks pregnant, but haven't been aware of any since. Its amazing to think about what your body does to prepare you for childbirth.. So cool!

Anyway, I'll sign off now, look forward to hearing more about how you are all coping...

highlander · 19/07/2004 19:59

what do BH feel like? I'm 31wks now and not felt anything, much to OB's surprise.

stringbean · 19/07/2004 20:34

Hello - just thought I'd drop in and see how everyone is doing. Work is so busy at the moment, that I just don't seem to get any time to read these threads, let alone post anything. I'm working until 37 weeks (currently 30+2) and had hoped to hand over to my replacement over about a 3-4 week period. Now realise my replacement will be on holiday during my last couple of weeks at work, so I'm limited to three days handover, and will probably have to work beyond my agreed finish date. Not too happy about this, especially since I had to spend last Thursday on the day assessment unit, following an unexpected bleed (turned out to be from an old erosion, they think, so not as bad as I'd initially thought). On top of this, we are just about to have builders move in to start our extension (why do we all do these daft things like adding to our houses, or moving house, in the build-up to birth?).

Other than this, I'm feeling fine, gradually getting larger, very active baby (wish I knew what it was - getting a bit stuck for girls' names). Hope you're all well.

cazzybabs · 20/07/2004 12:50

I am suffering with bad back ache which is really annoying and I have managed to miss my 28 week blood test and am too scared to re-book it. I am also really tired and have an ingrowing toe nail which is very painful - moan moan moan. Also we have had the results of our house survery back and it looks like the house needs a new roof and has damp where the damp course has failed - great!!!
Anyway - nice to hear everyone else;s problems.
Still only 10 more weeks to go - HORRAH!!!!!

dejags · 21/07/2004 15:49

Saw the consultant this afternoon after the scan on Monday. It's looking seriously like I'll be joining the August girls. DB is still growing like mad and they are pretty certain that I'll be induced at 38 weeks if this continues.

Have a GTT booked for next wednesday which I am not particularly pleased about

Bang goes my plan of a low intervention water birth - seriously didn't want to be induced, but it's better than the alternative of a caesarian...

OP posts:
jacksmumto1 · 22/07/2004 14:25

Dejags - sorry to hear that you might be induced but as you say... it may be better than a cs and if you did wait for a "natural" start to labour then you could go to 42 weeks and have to be induced or need a cs due to baby size..... What is a GTT?

I'm seeing the consultant tomorrow morning to discuss my planned cs - hopefully he'll give me a date then. Like you I'd prefer no intervention but after all the problems of last time plus the thought of being 2 weeks overdue and suffering with severe SPD is enough for me to say a cs is the best thing for me. I think I'll get the 29/30/31 august dates - part of me would like to push for the 1st sept - just based on the fact that a late august baby would be the youngest in the school year... am I being silly???

I'll let you know tomorrow how I get on!

cazzybabs · 22/07/2004 14:27

I would push for 1st Sept - there is evidence that Sept babies do better - but there are always exceptions to the rule!

dejags · 22/07/2004 15:41

A GTT is a Glucose Tolerance Test - this is to see how well your body processes sugar. If the body's ability to do so decreases this means that you have gestational diabetes which results in a bigger than average baby and can cause other problems too.

Lucky for us we are not worried about when the baby arrives - as we are moving to South Africa and they only have one school intake per year in January it won't make a difference either way.

Still interested to know how we bred such a whopper - DS was 8lb10 so a fairlyl big baby but I was 6lb3 and DH was 7lb2 - he is tall and skinny and I am average all round. I have had a screening test for diabetes which gave me the all clear but have since learned that this is not always accurate. Really don't want to start with the whole insulin lark but I suppose needs must and all of that...

You and I may end up delivering on the same day then Jacksmum... hope all goes well with the consultant

OP posts:
jacksmumto1 · 23/07/2004 11:49

I understand now dejags... I hope you don't need insulin so fingers crossed for you that all goes well. As for baby size... both my mum, sister-in-law and a friend of mine had 10lb-ers for all their babies and no real reason for it - just one of those things I guess for some people!!

Saw the consultant this morning - no further forward with a date... a cs is inevitable so no worries on that score. He said that spina bifida and related problems with high AFP is extremely rare so he has no concerns, it seems more likely that I had a 'hidden' bleed early on hence the high AFP and it is possible that the placenta isn't as good as it should be - therefore concerns re baby-size... The scan today shows that this baby is small - on the small side of average - this could be genetic (how since I had a big baby last time and family genetics indicate large babies... ??? )OR it could be related to placenta function; the babies abdominal growth is tailing off which he wants to keep an eye on - I have another scan in just under 2 weeks, if the growth is still tailing off then the baby will be here even earlier as that will be the safest thing as the placenta may not be functioning as it should but if the growth stays on the same level then I can go to 38 1/2 weeks......

I'm supposed to be going on holiday on aug 4th for 2 1/2 weeks (booked last summer!)... we already have a problem with dh not being allowed the 2 weeks off work.. and it looks like I might not even make the holiday full-stop!! TYPICAL!
