Persiancatlady it's because by April 2018 everyone on benefits will be on UC and that counts as a 'change of circs' for many, those protected by the phasing in policy protection (which is already not always being put in place properly) will also no longer be protected by that point.

Graphista · 09/04/2017 23:13

Yes ctc is one of the benefits replaced by UC

Desperateforsleepzzzz · 09/04/2017 23:45

Does that mean people getting tax credit for 3 children that were born before the change , won't get it on Universal credit ?

AndNowltsSeven · 10/04/2017 00:06

No that is not true

  1. Anyone making a new claim for tax credits with three or more children will be able to claim up to November 2018. ( as long as they were born before April 6th 2017)

  2. Nobody will three or more children will be allowed to claim UC until after Nov 2018 ( which is a positive thing.

  3. Anyone moving from tax credits to UC either migrated or due to a change of circumstances WILL still be able to claim for more than two dc as long as there is no break in claim for more than 26 weeks.

  4. It will take until 2022 to move everyone claiming tax credits into UC.

  5. April 2018 is a meaningless date.

Graphista · 10/04/2017 00:08

Yes that's what I'm learning from reading govt website and others in detail. They're keeping it quiet and wording their statements carefully (remember Cameron's 'I don't WANT to reduce tax credits' and then he did?Wink)

Transitional protection is temporary, it won't apply to everyone, the protection means that when someone would normally have been receiving an increase, if under UC rules their not entitled to more they don't then receive the increase. So like someone not getting a pay rise for 5/10 years, they're not ACTUALLY receiving less but they have less spending power as prices continue to rise so in REAL terms they are getting less. (Gawd I hope that makes sense)

NONE of this info is being widely or honestly broadcast.

AndNowltsSeven · 10/04/2017 00:12

The transitional protection within TC to UC you are referring to relates to the monetary amounts, NOT how many children you can claim for.
In regards to number of dc everyone has 26 weeks grace either swapping from TC to UC or a breaknina claim.

Graphista · 10/04/2017 00:13

Andnow where you getting those dates from I've not seen them anywhere? I hope it's true but I'm sceptical.

Plus as someone with a fair bit of experience on being in the system I've found they'll try and make out all sorts are a 'change of circumstances necessitating this be classified as a new claim'

AndNowltsSeven · 10/04/2017 00:20

But that's my point new claims are fine - within 26 weeks.

That is what I thought you were going to say and it is absolute nonsense.

Anyone moving from tax credits to UC either migrated or due to a change of circumstances WILL still be able to claim for more than two dc as long as there is no break in claim for more than 26 weeks
Thank you to AndNowItsSeven for this quote as it is correct.

Afreshstartplease · 10/04/2017 06:53

On every thread about tax credits / universal credit and over 2 children, people who know NOTHING come along and I assume try to scare others with FALSE claims of what will happen. When done to those actually providing the CORRECT information.

Viviennemary · 10/04/2017 23:49

I think it's far from clear so far. I understand that you won't be able to claim for a third child if it is born after April 2017. But say somebody has three children and already get the tax credits for three children presumably they won't be able to claim for a fourth child as it would be a new claim. So basically nobody can claim now for any more children born after April 2017. Is that correct.

Afreshstartplease · 11/04/2017 06:50

Yes Vivienne

PersianCatLady · 11/04/2017 12:16

So basically nobody can claim now for any more children born after April 2017
Yes that is correct, whether you are claiming CTC or UC no-one will get any extra money for third or subsequent children born after 6th April 2017, except for a few exceptions such as disabled children or children born as a result of rape or DV.

PersianCatLady · 11/04/2017 12:22

Exactly.

If you are changing from CTC to UC and already have four children then you will be able to keep claiming for them.

One situation that I can see being problematic is that if you have four children born before 2017 and after November 2018 you lose you job and have to claim benefits for the first time, then the way I am understanding it, you will only be able to claim UC for two of the children, as this would be a NEW claim.

If anyone disagrees with this then please feel free to reply.

If you start a new claim for UC having never claimed CTC, for example

M2R2 · 13/04/2017 09:20

Catlady, i don't think that rule apply here, as it state that you can't apply for new child born after April 2017. Therefore even if its a new claim but all dcs born before that it will have an exception.
I think its the same for housing benefit and LHA if you have a higher rent but was working and could afford it, then loose your job benefits will cover full rent not just LHA.

Clairecasswell · 02/05/2018 15:18

Precisely!!!! I sit down with my husband and discuss if we can have a third and we cant as we cant afford it. Sick of people reproducing who think they dont have to worry financially as they will get paid out in benefits. Why should us taxpayers pay for you to have a third when they have to make the decision not to.
