I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi all 😊 Just wrote a massive post them lost it! Will try to keep this one brief.
I was last on here in 2015 (hi again Lucinda!) when I was hospitalised for HG for two weeks. We sadly lost the baby and to be honest I never thought I would get pregnant again. I already have two dc & have had 10 losses at various stages. I've been through HG 4 times and each time it has got worse - last time I didn't eat or drink anything for 8 days and was still vomiting.
Anyway, we found out this morning that I am pregnant again - I must be about 3+5 so very early but am already feeling queasy.

I'm going to make an appointment at the gp's tomorrow & am prepared to fight for ondansetron which was the only thing that had any kind of impact last time. I wanted to know if anyone had any advice, and knew anything about research into whether starting meds earlier can help keep it under control? Is there anything else I can take as well? I was on three medications last time, but can't remember what the other two were - it was all by drip and it was such a nightmarish time that I've partly blocked it out.
I'm feeling positive, ready for the challenge 😖 and pretty scared too if I'm honest. Thrilled but terrified sums it up. Any advice would be fantastic & congratulations to all of you who are pregnant, just sorry you have to feel so rough!

Melleebacca · 29/01/2017 17:14

Chintaria - you are so brave! My fingers are crossed for you that this one sticks. My stepmum had HG and miscarriages, she said she was always sicker on the ones that stuck (probably not very reassuring).
I'm on round 2, will be 11w tomorrow and I have a 15m DD. I had ondansetron leftover from DD, so as soon as nausea kicked in (5w), started taking one a day, and upped it to 2 a day when vomiting started (6w). With DD I needed 4 lots of IV fluids due to dehydration, and this time around I've managed without them, so assume the pre emitive pill popping helped.
Good luck!

Lamaitresse · 29/01/2017 18:37

Thanks Mellee, but I think crazy is probably more appropriate 😂
Thanks for giving me a little hope, I would love it to not be so bad this time. Can I ask what dose you're on please? It's brilliant that you've managed to stay out of hospital, what a relief!! I'm already feeling pretty terrible, got the shivers then going hot, and already struggling to eat this evening. Need to get meds asap 😖

Melleebacca · 29/01/2017 19:11

Chintaria - I'm on 8mg tablets. I can take 3 of them a day, every 8hrs. But I'm not awake for 16hrs a day. I take one at 6am, and the next around 2pm and I'm usually asleep not long after DD at around 8pm. I always throw up first dinner. Occasionally second dinner as well, and breakfast doesn't always stick.
I probably have been dehydrated enough to have IVs, but kept managing them at home as taking DD to hospital with me will be pretty stressful. My hubby makes me drink at least a mouthful of water every hour or so.
I hope this all helps. 🌺🌸🌼

Lamaitresse · 29/01/2017 20:03

Thanks so much, it helps enormously 😊 Yes, agree re hospital - last time my poor dad had to come over from the uk (I'm in Belgium) to mind the kids for 3 weeks, I feel very selfish this time as I know what effect our actions/decisions have on close family & friends 😁 Just hoping so much that I can somehow miraculously control it this time around...

Lamaitresse · 29/01/2017 20:04

Baby brain already - can't decide whether that should be effect or affect 🙈

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2017 21:03

peace I have said many times the worst thing ever to be sick on is rice

Every single sodding grain comes up !!!

CastleFeck · 29/01/2017 21:04

Good luck chintaria, I think you're very brave, and possibly crazy tbh😄

Hops hope the GTT goes ok tomorrow. Mine is on Tuesday argh.

Congrats London, lovely pics.

Hi everyone else.

I've got a rotten cold and cough but it does seem to have reduced the nausea slightly. I found this with a cold in December too, strange, but I'm not complaining.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 29/01/2017 21:20

Blondes I know, I got cocky Envy

LucindaE · 29/01/2017 21:47

Just dashing on to say welcome to Chintaria.
I am so sorry about such a heartbreaking series of mc's and attacks of Hyperemesis. It would be presumptuous to compare my own one mmc (and, I now realise, a few very early ones) with such a history as yours. You are the expert on Hyperemesis. Pre-emptive meds is obviously the way and if you phone 024 7638 2020 Pregnancy Sickness Support, you will get a phone call back with great advice on the best way to get them but with such a history I am sure they won't refuse meds.
Are sips of flat coke, ice lollies, the juice and fruit of tinned fruit, sips of milk or soya milk chocolate milkshake, elderflower water, soda water or (I think Blonde's innovation) cuppa soup any use?

OP posts:
Lamaitresse · 29/01/2017 21:55

Thanks Lucinda 😊 Do you know if I'll be able to get help via that number from abroad? I seem to remember reading that someone else who lived abroad & wasn't having any luck with their doctor was able to get ondansetron prescribed for them in the uk? Would that be via that number I wonder?
I will definitely try the things you mentioned - if it gets as bad as it did last time though I'm not sure they'd help.
Cannot believe we are going through this again, have to go in and tell work tomorrow to warn them, eek!

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2017 22:09

Welcome @chinteria. Good luck and yes get meds asap to help

I swear by chicken cuppa soup yet couldn't face eating chicken at all

@peace. Not cocky. You just wanted and tried it. After being v sick on rice on holiday in set I try to avoid

Tho forget sometimes and at a buffet have some and whoosh reappears :(

Did have a curry the other day and kept it down. Was amazing

Decided to eat what I want as ether I will be sick or not

Good luck with who had the gtt test tom. Hope you are fasting now 😬😬

peaceloveandbiscuits · 29/01/2017 22:14

Tbf I'm 90% sick first thing now so just bile. So didn't think rice would make a difference. Silly me, tried to brush my teeth and up it came Sad

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2017 22:18

Did a google and you can buy online ......

[[http://247worldstorerxe.com/cart/index less
Then an euro a pill]]

Sucks you need to buy it but if makes you better paying £3/euro a day for to be worth it

Melleebacca · 29/01/2017 22:33

Blondes - what a great website! Can't believe the price that they demand though. Especially when in NZ I got given 90pills with barely a question. I'm going to have to go back in a couple of weeks though. 😞

Good luck for those with the GTT test. I had a snack prepared in the car for as soon as I was done, and so needed it.

Chintaria - I lived in Antwerp in 2005 for a student exchange. Hopefully the doctors are good to you.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2017 23:34

Hopefully gp will prescribe but if they don't then personally I would pay £1 a tablet so £3/euro a day if made me feel better

MamaErmintrude · 30/01/2017 06:22

Thanks for the new thread Lucinda! Sorry to have been quiet for awhile. My amazing parents came to stay last week and sorted out everything for the baby, as I've been incapable. Feel so relieved!

Hopsalong another third trimester re occurer/worsener here. I've definitely found part of the reason it got worse is her increasing size, squirms and kicks. Just makes it ten times worse every time she moves. I never stopped taking meds and don't dare! The only comfort I can give you is that I'm now at 35 weeks and last week I started to feel really excited for the first time since week 6 when HG began. I'm off work again and was feeling truly awful about it but in the end kept reminding myself if I'd been in a car accident/had a stroke etc etc they would have to manage.

To those with constipation and struggling with the nausea of lactulose, can I recommend bran? (As in wheat bran, from somewhere like Holland and Barrett). It's been a revelation for me! The only thing is you MUST be able to get water down with it. If you're keeping nothing down then don't have it, but if you're keeping even some down IME it's been fine. Just one spoon a day works for me; you could get it down in a wide variety of food/liquid. I tend to mix it into a spoon of yoghurt. HTH...

PS I also find on bad nausea days I get diarrhoea. That combined with lactulose can be not good for me!! Because lactulose apparently lines your stomach it sits there for a few days, so harder to regulate if you swing from the constipation/diarrhoea extremes (sometimes on the same day Envy ). Whereas bran is in/out same day so a bit easier to regulate if that makes sense?

Sending non nausea thoughts to one and all...

MamaErmintrude · 30/01/2017 06:25

Erk sorry just to be clear - you don't need to get liquid down at the same TIME as bran. Just overall throughout the day getting in enough liquid for the bran to soak up (which is what bulks up your poo and makes it easier - sorry Blush )

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 30/01/2017 08:51

Good morning all,

Happy to have found the new thread.

Waving to all the familiar faces, and welcoming all the new ones to the orange bucket club. Sorry to hear so many of us have been struggling of late.

I have been really struggling with work (hence my absence from here) this past week. I'm just so exhausted and feeling rotten, I'm struggling to cope. Which I feel ridiculous for.
Have had a bad weekend for nausea too, I have just turned 24 weeks so perhaps it's the hormone surge? Was all excited to hit viability, but have felt quite sorry for myself otherwise TBH.

Any how. Must kick myself out of it. Onward and upwards. I'll plaster a smile on my face at work today and fake it till I make it!

Special waves to South my commuting (and orange bucket) buddy for the lovely scan pictures and baby girl news!

And to Chintara for being brave enough to join this club again. Keeping everything crossed for a smooth pregnancy.

Hi to everyone else. I hope we all have a good week. On a real plus January is nearly over, and February is nice and short- so we are closing in! Xx

LightTripper · 30/01/2017 10:03

Welcome Chintara. I would think the number is worth a go in any case. Great that Blondes found that website as a back up. My only other idea is maybe taking something like the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Green Top Guide with you to see your doctor. It is really up to date (June lat year) and page 17 has reference to Canadian studies showing that pre-emptive use of antiemetics (before onset of nausea) improved symptoms. (The references are given at the end: 104. Korea G, Maltepe C. Pre-emptive therapy for severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy and hyperemesis gravidarum. J Obstet Gynaecol 2004;24:530–3 and 105. Maltepe C, Koren G. Preemptive treatment of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy: results of a randomized controlled
trial. Obstet Gynecol Int 2013;2013:809787.)

Good luck!

LucindaE · 30/01/2017 14:01

Chintaria You are right -OnceaMeer lived in the Netherlands and got good advice on how to get it there, so do ring them, I suppose with + 44.

Great advice from everyone, and congratulations to Blondes for finding that website.
Peacelove Oh dear, toothbrushing is hazardous. Sometimes I broke the rules and used a mouthwash of bicarb of soda and water, very salty, so probably forbidden, butI didn't swallow it. Also, I found a kids' toothbrush with consequent small head and kids' strawberry toothpaste less nauseating.
MamaErmintrude That sounds like great advice about bran for those who can definitely keep down a mouthful of it with yoghurt.
IAmSerious Sorry to hear about a journey backwards down a snake, to borrow that great simile, sorry, was it from HaichM? I have been really vague this week.
Waves to LightTripper Melleebacca and everyone. Apologies if I've rudely missed anyone.

Hello all! Just popping in to give (gentle) pats on the back to everyone and to gaze in awe and admiration at all the second-timers. You are amazing!!! Never forget that!!! Flowers

MiniDrifter is now just over 12 months old and seeing as we would ideally like another one, age is not on my side - in my late 30's - and I have just been made redundant (!), it would seem like now is a good time to try for number 2. The only thing holding me back is that I'm so terrified and still scarred by my previous HG experience.

I hate that this is affecting such a momentous life decision. But I love my little boy so much and am scared to miss out on a huge chunk of his baby/toddlerhood as I lay in a darkened room, staring at the ceiling, vomiting each time I even slightly move… Sad

However, reading about so many on here who have been brave enough to take the plunge has heartened me no end. Maybe I'll be back with news. Who knows…

In the meantime, I think I'll visit my GP to discuss getting early meds ready and lined up. And access the counselling option via the PSS helpline…

Solidarity to all! :: punches air with beige bland carbs clenched tightly in fist ::

TwoDrifters Welcome back. I hope you won't need this thread, but it will be nice to have you. At the moment, we've got several rejoiners.

Lucinda - I have an electric toothbrush this time around and that seems to be helping, although I only clean my teeth once a day when feeling this bad.

Feeling really green today, I don't normally wake up feeling green but have today. Heart racing, hormones pumping, husband tossing and turning. Set up DD big girl bed this weekend so might start sleeping in there until feeling better. Not moving DD into it for a few more months.

Waves to all. Started a two bucket system so when hubby is cleaning out one, still have one with me, just in case.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/01/2017 16:53

Shirley. I had a few snakes at 24w. And at 26/27

Scanned today. Bubs is heading up for 5kbs and not quite 32w. Gulps

Anyone who thinking of going for no 2 / congrats mad people 😉
