I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Finally no longer the bottom of the list. 😊

Haitch - Ketones are a tricky little thing to understand. It is essentially about your body breaking down fats and that's what causes ketones in the urine. I'm not really sure why it is used as a measure of dehydration. My best guess is that the ketone number will be much higher if not diluted in the urine by water. Too high ketones can symbolize that the baby isn't getting enough of what it needs too. You can get IVs at hospital with glucose etc in it to give you more nutrition.
Also, my HG is currently changing my tastes. I can't have hot chips anymore, or pasta, can barely even chew that without my body rejecting it. Everything tastes bad. But I'm hungry! And then I eat and comes up.

Lucinda - DD is an absolute delight and she shouldn't remember any of this. The only positives in this horrible, horrible journey.

ShowMeTheWayHome · 27/01/2017 19:27

Hello

@hopsalong

I had HG for the first 16 weeks and ended up in hospital on a drip.

I'm now 33 weeks and have been vomiting again for the last 3 weeks. Feel completely miserable and sorry for myself Sad

Doctor has prescribed cyclizine again. I double checked with the pharmacist who has assured me it's ok to take in 3rd trimester.

Hope this helps and you feel better soon!

MagnumAddict · 27/01/2017 20:42

Not a good day today. Hopes were high after feeling better on the tablets. May have to lower expectations of what the tablets can realistically do and be grateful I've only actually been sick once today.

I'm not grateful though, I'm fed up. & fed up of being fed up!

I like the thought of heading for a pink castle though. That has cheered me up a bit

MagnumAddict · 27/01/2017 20:48

melleebacca totally relate to HG dictating what's hot and what's not food wise & does it have any consistency? Nope!! Fickle!!!

Tonight for dinner I had a banana sandwhich as apparently I can't eat plain chicken breast anymore. God even writing the words makes me want to be sick!

I also turn toddler like when dh even suggests some food. It's like I can't even stand to hear the name let alone eat it!

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/01/2017 20:59

No worries Lucinda 😘 Castle is there whenever :)

And as usual I should keep my mouth shut and fingers still

I don't learn. Whenever I say things are good I'm then Ill :(

Lost dinner big time :(

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/01/2017 21:00

Magnum. I went totally off chicken and all green veg. Plus for ages literally survived on cuppa soup chicken (but not any that flavour and again see above sentence) and bagels

Melleebacca · 27/01/2017 21:18

Today is salty potato chips and nothing else. Hubby is going to blend me up a tin of peaches later into a smoothie.

Chicken on buns was a go until last night.

MagnumAddict · 27/01/2017 21:38

Quick question for anyone else taking three tablets a day of Cyclizine- do you have a recommended time to take them?

Morning and lunch are obvious but I'm not sure if it's more beneficial to take the last one before dinner or bed?

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/01/2017 21:46

I split mine into 8hrs

6/7am
2pm
10pm

I find keeping them regularly going in helps

I also if awake peeing or puking 3/4am take the first tablet then as the. Fall back to sleep and in my system iyswim.

CastleFeck · 27/01/2017 22:09

Thanks for info on ordestron Melle and cookie. It explains why it stops you pooing if it's shutting down valves!

Sorry that there's some fellow tri3ers feeling crappy again. I started to feel better after 35 weeks in pg1 (not HG, but bad ms) hoping for a reprieve this time too. Feeling mentally stronger today which is half the battle with this job.

I can't remember who else said what, but hoping for a good weekend for everyone with minimal symptoms.

I've got my GTT early next week and I've no idea how I'll survive not eating for 12hrs+ Blurgh

SickRose · 27/01/2017 22:22

I'm sure this link has been shared here before but it's been one of the only pages that seem to stop (well meaning) family and friends suggesting ginger biscuits!

hopsalong · 28/01/2017 11:19

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Haven't been sick again but am feeling very nauseous/ close. Am going to restart cyclizine 2x a day and see if that helps (the drowsiness never really went away for me and I am so under the cosh at work after taking a lot of time off in the first trimester that I think I have to have my wits about me in the morning, even nauseously). What do people do about reflux? Last time I chewed Tums like they were going out of fashion, but this time they have made me vomit (had a few first-trimester Tum vomits) and can't abide the idea. Have little runs of acid into my mouth that make the nausea worse.

Also would be great if anyone has any suggestions about the GTT. Mine is on Mon. Last time I had the mini one, but after a big baby (over 4kg, anyway) I'm scheduled for the full one. Petrified about what the liquid is that we have to drink?! Lucozade would be OK but the thought of something thick and chalky is worrying. Also not sure how to get through the fasting or what to do with myself during the hours when I will be hanging round by the hospital waiting for the blood draws. Last time I ended up throwing up in the afternoon from an unsettled / empty stomach and expect it will be the same this time, or worse! So have taken whole day off work -- not ideal...

whoateallthejaffacakes · 28/01/2017 12:02

hops gtt for me was a bit like strong concentrated flat orange lucazade, wasn't allowed to leave waiting room & had no phone signal in basement level, luckily i had kindle with me. i didn't have HG then so it was tolerable & i brought a sandwich for when it was over

hopsalong · 28/01/2017 13:39

Thank you whoate! Last time I was given regular Lucozade to drink (a bit more than a bottle) but the midwife said that this time I would be having the "full" test which is a different drink. I can't remember the name. But am worried it is going to be a thick/chalky texture, which will definitely make me gag. Does anyone know what happens if you can't keep it down? Can they do the test via an IV glucose?! Maybe that is a bit extreme, given that there is no real reason to think I have gestational diabetes anyway, other than being old and having a large baby last time.

Melleebacca · 28/01/2017 16:59

Hops - the full test in my understanding, is the same drink, but more tests. In NZ you have to stay for 2hrs instead of 1, and get more bloods drawn. My SIL grows big babies too.

In regards to reflux, my mum gave me a bottle of acidex, which I think needs a prescription, but is safe for pregnant women. It tastes like ainseed, but just a couple of drops in 50ml of water soothes the acid instantly.

Had a hard night here. Hubby tossing and turning keeps waking me up and I'm trying not to start puking. I also have massive aches in my shoulders from sleeping on my side, anyone have any tips?

LucindaE · 28/01/2017 18:57

ShowMeTheWayHome Welcome. Sorry you are suffering again. I am glad you have got meds for it and thanks for great advice.
Melleebacca I wonder if those supportive pillows recommended by Osteopaths could help? According to my old chiropractar (sp?) the gap between your shoulder and your neck should be filled by your pilllow if you are lying on your side to align the spine. Great advice too about ketones. The idea of a smoothie from those invaluable tinned peaches is a great idea.
hopalong I believe ranitidine and omeprazole are the favourites on here. I was told by GP that gaviscon was the only thing allowed, but it's just not true and an effective anti heartburn med can make a huge difference to the vomiting.
MagnumAddict I am glad the Pink Castle image is cheering! In due course, you will be arriving at the drawbridge. At least there is lots of magnesium in a banana...
Castlefeck Never knew about that valve closing off, either.
SickRose and others, good luck for that awful sounding test.
whoate Good advice, too.
Blondes Sorry to hear of re-appearing dinner. Back one space; very dismal. That wonderful castle will defiitely go up on the next thread.
Waves to Pip LightTripper Iamserious and everyone. Apologies if I have rudely ignored anyone/cross posted.

I'm in the top half of the list Grin

Hello gang. Hope you're all as ok as can be. Rice happened today. Every. Single. Grain.

Daffodil397 · 28/01/2017 23:08

Hello everyone
blondes love the pink castle pic! lucinda you are so right about the snakes and ladders feeling of riding this hg train, maybe we could market the idea to hasboro Smile
Well I've had a day of whizzing up a little ladder after a fair few days of sliding down snakes as it were! Actually didn't need a sleep today and nausea stayed well in the background. Even ventured into finishing off a few mouthfuls of my daughters spag bol and that went down ok!
It's been great like a break in the clouds. Not going to count on it continuing in any way but it's been so nice to be less zombie like!
socially I agree with your advice about ondansetron. castle I got it prescribed last time for uncontrollable vomiting, this time I have been using it to manage nausea and more occasional vomiting. For me it brings down the nausea sensation where you are puffing for breath and maybe bringing up the saliva stuff but nothing else (sorry for tmi) and stuck in that state for a while. It makes it more manageable but yes does nothing for exhaustion or being able to tolerate food or getting rid of it completely, as mellee says. Might be worth a try in your case. Seems to work best for me if I take it several hours before the nausea is usually at its worst (early-late eve)
mellee haitchm* mamma sorry to hear your symptoms are so tough at the moment. Hope a break in the clouds comes for you soon too, and anyone else in this position too.

Daffodil397 · 28/01/2017 23:19

Sorry - just realised only read 1st page before posting, hope comments weren't too behind the conversation!
Just quickly - Hops ranitidine was the only thing that helped reflux for me, I think the doc has to prescribe it. Comes in a tablet so you don't have to deal with forcing a horrible liquid down!
magnum sorry you are also having a tough time! Though had to laugh when you said you react like a toddler to dh suggestions of food! Me too!
Dh was trying to tempt me with a bit of his chicken and salad and I was reacting with horror and shaking my head very much like my 13 month old dd while tentatively reaching for one of his chips. Normal me would love chicken and salad but pregnant me cannot stand it Smile
Waves and hugs to all xx

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2017 09:33

Hg test for me was awful. Didn't mind the fasting. Are last at think 10pm but drank water

Slept and up 6am and water. Did feel hungry which is in your head as usually I wouldn't eat 10-6 .....

Got to hospital. Had blood test then drank syrup. Gaged a few times and spent next 2hrs trying not to heave and throw up

Was told if I did then have to re starve and do test another day

Did help having df there and also had 28w scan and consultant chat inbetween the 2hrs

But kept gagging and swallowing it down

Bang on 2hrs later had another blood test. Al showed fine. They did ask why I was having it as no family history. I said didn't know was told to have it

Lit mins after blood went to loo to throw up.

Are on way home as starved

Sick on way home in car and went to bed and throw up there as well - in trusty coop bag

4hr sleep later felt fine

Southlondon321 · 29/01/2017 10:33

Hi guys,

I've been so busy and exhausted from work I haven't had chance to check the thread. Nearly 22 weeks now, last week had two days of vomiting but kept at work. Went in an it late on second day. I woke up this morning thinking I was going to be sick but actually I think I was just being kicked in important organs mixed with heartburn lol.

So sorry we have so many new joiners, you are in good company. I am sending anti nausea, hydrated and healthy thoughts.

Had my scan on Friday ... here are my highlights!! She's a healthy baby girl!! First photo is head, body and crossed legs. Second is her face with a hand in front. Now to plan names, buy stuff, set up nursery, become a mother! We moved in October when I was very unwell and early (can't even remember weeks anymore!!) and still haven't fully unpacked the spare room lol. So lots to do.

Still on my magic cocktail of cyclizine, metrochlopromide and ranitidine! Few glitches but anything feels better than those first 16 weeks!!!!!

Hope everyone having good anti-vom weekends xx

Blondes that sounds like a GTT rather than an HG test?

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2017 14:11

Sorry means gtt. I am so dappy now

@south. Whoop. Lovely scan pic and 💓💓💓💓💓 so much buying clothes etc when you know what flavour

LucindaE · 29/01/2017 15:51

SouthLondon Welcome back.Such a sweet scan photo. Sorry to hear of blip: Mother Hen says cluck, cluck, flap, flap, don't overdo it.
Daffodil Congratulations on spaghetti! Well, on a Hyperemesis Board Game- the Punk Rockers of yesteryear thought it super cool to vomit on stage - so they might love it.
Blondes That test sounds so horrible.
Waves to all.
