Hello! Thought we should leave those lovely TTCers in peace!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
honeyapple · 21/02/2007 17:00

I love reading your posts MrsMcJnr- you should start your own blog!

Bare essentials for a baby-

cot
bedding- sheets/blanket
car seat
buggy
6 vests
6 sleepsuits/babygros
socks
hat
sling
nappies(real v. disposable debate continues!)
Muslin squares- for puke and stuff!
baby monitor if house is big/can't hear upstairs

Things I wouldnt waste money on-

Moses basket
Posh pram with carrycot
electronic swinging chairs/bouncers
changing station/ changing mat
nappy disposal system
steriliser (cos you will be breastfeeding!!and boobs dont need sterilising!!)
baby shoes (friends will buy them for you because of the cute factor!)
baby monitor with TV!

Cant live without-

Sling
muslin squares (especially if baby is a projectile puker!)

honeyapple · 21/02/2007 17:04

Oh just thought of another!

Dont waste money on-

Babybath

honeyapple · 21/02/2007 17:05

Of course everyone is entitled to waste money on whatever baby things they wish!

BabyMadwithBump · 21/02/2007 17:13

I have everything I could possibly need and more I have a list and believe me you DON'T want to see it!

pinkranger · 21/02/2007 17:16

Was just wondering Honeyapple how you got away without using a changing mat?? I have lost count of the number of times my ds weed on it while changing him , my carpet would have started to smell x

greedyforbabies · 21/02/2007 17:38

i love your posts too mrs! and i LOVE the fact that you are soooooooooo in love with your dh! nearly made me cry reading what you said about imagining hwat your baby would look like! i just cant imagine mine looking any different from the 2 i already have, weird hey!

my baby essentials would be similar to honeyapples but include a little bouncy chair, cos i thought ours was great!
never got on with slings, or breastfeeding come to that, so my microwave steriliser was a god send!
no need for expensive prams although everyone (except for me (and honeyapple!) seemed to get one!). we got a £60 pushchair that can be used from birth and then a second hand £15 double pushchair!
baby baths are a bit of a waste of money, we always used the bath sling instead! i am just trying to imagine my new baby in the bath with my other two! might have to wait until the new one is a few weeks old before trying that!
muslins! oh yes!!!! my ds was/is a pukey pukey baby/child! i had a muslin draped over my shoulder for the first year of his life i think!

two of his worst pukes ever were.............

  1. in my dhs mouth as my dh (stupidly) lifted him over his head and jiggled him!!
  1. straight up and down again into his own face. completely covered himself in nasty projectile carrot puke! we were at baby yoga and i had been throwing him around a bit!
greedyforbabies · 21/02/2007 17:40

the joys of young babies hey!!! what are we all doing???

greedyforbabies · 21/02/2007 17:43

do you know what!? i really like this thread! it feels so much more personal than the due in october one. i dont feel like i know anyone on there yet (except for old MrsMcBump)

MrsMcJnr · 21/02/2007 18:00

Thank you Honeyapple for the complement and for the great list! Where do you stand on the nappie debate then? I was actually thinking of only buying a Moses basket and not a cot my thinking being that we?ll be moving abroad before the baby is 3 months old (hopefully!) and that we could buy a cot there and save lugging one from here. Is that silly thinking? I?m also hoping that all my pals who have finished having babies will donate things to me so I don?t have to buy too much!

Greedy ? thanks for your thoughts too ? hoping to breastfeed but you never know what will happen do you? DH says I?m too soppy sorry that I nearly made you cry though but you got me back with the puke stories, I was nearly sick myself! I know what you mean about the October thread ? it?s a bit slow on chat sometimes because we don?t really know each other that well yet. I?ve told myself that if Friday goes well, I?ll become MrsMcBump and update my profile, how?s that for positive thinking?! Oh and less of the old, I think we are the same age!

By the way, there is balance in the universe ? Bad thing: had a call from my bank manaqer to say I?ve gone over my overdraft limit and then Good thing: a call from the estate agent to say that someone has noted interest in our house. Sorry if this sounds patronizing but I know many of you are down South and our property system up here is a bit odd ? all this means is that someone wants to be kept informed if we set a closing date for offers or if there are any other people interested so it?s not that great but it?s a start!

Go on Babymad ? show us your whole list! Go on!!!

PinkButterfly · 21/02/2007 19:07

ok, i'll be the first to say "nothing"!

pinkranger · 21/02/2007 19:57

babymad , do you have children already are having you been 'collecting"

BabyMadwithBump · 21/02/2007 20:05

I have 2DS's, but I have nothing from DS#1 (apart from a handfull of clothes) and only half (from the list) from DS#2, I had been TTC this LO for 18 months and we knew 12 months before that, that we wanted one last one, so been collecting you could say, my main pram I brought 12 months before my BFP, 3 of the 4 pram/pushchairs are new, and the other one from DS#2! I know we're mad ! but all good fun!!

fettle · 21/02/2007 20:09

Evening everyone!!

honeyapple, your list is spot on. although we caved in at the very last minute and got a moses basket, as I had obstetric cholestasis and we really thought for a while DD wasn't going to survive, we suddenly thought if we have her, she was going to sleep in our room for as long as possible. In the end she grew out of the basket within 8 weeks, so she had to move into a cot.

Babymad - not mad, just well prepared!

MrsMc - don't listen to any scary labour stories - yours will be completely different to anyone else's! I have to say that I'm quite glad I was quite ignorant about it all - as I felt safer not really knowing what might go wrong. Although it turned out I thought I was going to poo in the labour ward, when in fact that was DD pushing down, but after that it was a breeze.

big babies- hmm. Bit scared of that me!! Don't come from a small family. Both brothers are 6ft6, DH is 6ft4. I'm nearly 6ft. DD is currently over the 99th centile in height. Luckily I had her at 36 weeks, but she was still 7lb4.5oz! Can you imagine if I'd gone to term, let alone over!!! SCBU just laughed when the obs consultant asked if they wanted to take DD into SCBU when born as she was technically premature - far too healthy & heavy, they said!! My younger brother was 11lbs at birth, but it was my Mum's 4th!

anyway, I agree with not sharing baby names - it is funny, but it is something very personal to you and DH. I know it shouldn't matter, but it is weird - we wouldn't even tell immediate family what we were thinking. Then I had competitive friends who were pg at the same time and I was scared they would nick our names (how sad is that!, so I gave them false ideas!!!)

Greedy, MrsMc - i'm with you on the Oct thread - feel a bit strange posting on there, as I don't really know anyone except you two. Maybe once i've got past this week, I'll feel more positive. it was around this time that i mc the first time, so just need to get over this week. Feels a long time til my next scan on 23rd March!

You know we were discussing booking in appointments? I've got mine in a couple of weeks. MW is visiting me at home at some point between 11am and 1pm and will be with me for up to 2 hours!!! Basically means I have to stay in all day with DD! Anyway, I've been sent my maternity notes and I have to fill them in myself before she comes. Luckily i've been through it twice before, but I still find it a bit strange. But at least I'll be able to check with DH about relations and illness as I can ask him in an evening.

Anyway, I've gone on far too long. Kitkat, I hope the chocolate was good. MrsMc how can you give up biscuits and cakes - ginger nut cookies and mint tictacs are the only thing stopping me throwing up!!

Take care all
x

BabyMadwithBump · 21/02/2007 20:30

Thank you fettle

Bodkin · 21/02/2007 21:08

Where to begin!!! I keep meaning to get on during the day, and then somehow just don't manage it, and then I try and catch up at night, but there's sooo much going on!

I agree with you guys about the antenatal threads. Our due in July one is great, but moves so fast and there are so many people I just can't keep up. Plus there is something very bonding about the TTC board (even though I was only on it for a month i lurked for a couple of months previously, so felt like I knew people a bit) And of course you ladies are all just lovely. it feels smashing to be reunited again and continuing the journey together (dabs at eyes with tatty old bit of bogroll)

Re the list of essentials - agree with everything on your list Honeyapple - spot on. I just got my Baby Bjorn sling returned to me while visting my friend in Bristol - since i used it for DD 3 years ago, it has really done the rounds (a further 5 friends have borrowed it for their babies!!! ) and it still looks fab and is in good condition, so I can only rave about it. They are expensive, but definitely value for money (and resale value on ebay is pretty good too)

Glad to hear Choosters scan was good - I was thinking of her today. I had mine today as well - everything looks fine, although the baby was very low down (thought I had been feeling some kicks in very odd places), so to get it to move up so she could see it more clearly she had to tilt the couch right down so I was virtually slipping off head first! Did the trick though, and bean obligingly moved and waved! DD and DP came too. DD was a bit concerned when we said, "Look up there (pointing to the monitor) Can you see the baby up there?" to which she replied "What is the baby doing up there?" which was a fair enough question really!

Kitkat - sorry you are feeling rough. But don't put the hair shirt on as well, just keep repeating that this phase will pass, and get yourself snuggled up under a blanket of an evening with chocolate and crap telly. Get plenty of powernaps in - you are creating life! You will start to feel like your old self again soon, honestly!

Pink Butterfly - I know what you mean about names. There's nothing worse than telling people the name you have planned and them saying "oh i knew a at school, but she smelt of catfood...." or something similar

Greedy - great puke stories! The first time DD did a projectile (the contents of 2 full boobs) I was terrified. I had never seen so much liquid fly so fast.

Fettle - you're back! How is the MS going? Is it still exacerbated by being on mumsnet?!

Right I've waffled on too long, when I should be out in me shed...

Cheerio all xxxx

Bodkin · 21/02/2007 23:21

Just read back a bit and forgot to mention you MrsMcJ! Can't say that I have a real sense of whether it's pink or blue, but so many of my friends in RL have had pink first, blue second, I kind of expect to have a boy next. Couldn't see much to give any clues on the scan today - could barely make out that it was even a baby as it was in such a crazy position! But so far this pregancy has been very similar to my last one, so that could mean it is a girl again. Hmmmmmm.....

greedyforbabies · 22/02/2007 11:07

morning everyone! is it still morning?...........oh my god ...yes it is! what a long day so far!

firststar good luck with results, sure they must be fine. i used to analyse the blood for AFP in a previous job and we always phoned straight away if there were any problems, so i am sure you would have heard if there was any risk.

well then old mrs! (i know we are the same age, actually i think i am older than you! your birthday was at the end of last year wasn't it? i remember af arriving for you. were you 33 or 34 then?) i want to make sure i dont forget to say good luck for your scan tomorrow. i keep thinking about it, and then thinking "i wont say anything yet, cos its not till friday" i would hate to forget to say good luck when i really HAVEN'T forgotten! so GOOD LUCK! i hope its not over as quickly as mine is...........mine only took 5 mins tops! i wanted to watch my ickle baby all day! i wonder how much a DIY ultrasound machine would be????

babymad!!!!!! you REALLY picked yourself the perfect MN name didnt you! although, as i have said before, i think it should be 'babycompletelycrazy!!!'

im not very good at mentioning everyone by name , sorry!

twix .........hope you are feeling chirpier!

king of bods! glad your scan was ok. so they didnt mind you taking your dd in then? do you think i will be allowed to take my ds and dd in or will it be a bit too crowded?

KitKat30 · 22/02/2007 11:34

Morning lovely ladies - thanks for all your support yesterday, really appreciated it. Feeling a bit better today - mainly because I'm at home and decided to take a day off work! So much easier to control the nausea when you can have a break and a lie down when you need to...

Good luck to all those with scans and MW appts!

Greedy - your puke stories nearly made me lose my breakfast!!! So funny - did you manage not to laugh when your DC puked in your DH's mouth?!?! I dont think I'd have been able to hold it in!

Babymad - your list is bonkers!!!! I thought I was bad with coveting lovely baby things! So why no to the Moses basket? Do they grow out of them too quickly? I was thinking it would be quite a handy space saver...?

MrsMcJ - have you definitely decided on a move to Spain then? So exciting! Good to be near family I think. It's funny - since getting pg all I want to do is get out of London and move closer to my parents as well.

So nappy debate? I guess we're talking disposables v reusables??? I know it's not planet friendly but I'm afraid I'm going to use disposables all the way. Cant face the prospect of washing pooey nappies!!! (They should have a horrified face icon!)

Do you know what would be really useful - as well as the lists of what to buy - would be (for those of you who have kids already) a list of your top tips for the 1st weeks of caring for a newborn. I'm so clueless!! I keep reading as far as childbirth, but then I sort of forget that I need to think about what comes next... So come on girls, top tips please!

x

PS. I too feel very happy on this thread. Feel so much closer to you ladies - it's almost like I know you!! Plus it's like we're on a bit of a journey together - from TTC, to pregnancy - all the way through to parenthood. There's no-one else I'd rather make the trip with!

OP posts:
greedyforbabies · 22/02/2007 11:58

hey twix! glad you are feeling better!
i would say no to a moses basket cos they do grow out of them quickly and some babies just dont like them! we tried my ds in one and every time he did that moro reflex thing where they throw their arms above their heads he whacked his hands and it woke him up! he hated it so we only used it for a few times and then put him in his cot! luckily dd got a bit more use out of it, but probably cos we used to swaddle her so her arms couldn't escape!!!

top tips! wow! it probably doesn't matter what anyone says cos you will just do what feels best for you anyway. BUT........my TOP TOP tip from having experience with 2 of them is dont run straight to them everytime they cry! sounds tough i know, but with my ds we used to put him down in his cot and if he cried i would pick him straight back up and think "oh hes not tired or hes uncomfortable etc". big mistake i would say! with my dd we would put her down wide awake if she had been awake for more than a couple of hours and just leave her. sometimes she would cry for a few minutes, but most of the time she just nodded off to sleep after about 10 mins! both of my 2 are fantastic sleepers, but my dd has never had any problems GETTING to sleep, whereas my ds used to be a nightmare to get to sleep sometimes! we never had to do any of the pacing around in the night to get dd back to sleep or anything. we literally fed her and put her back down awake and she would just nod off!
does that make me sound like a harsh mum! i know its really tough and you just want to cuddle your baby all the time, but with your second you dont seem to get the same time to do that as with your first (might just be me, cos my ds was only 17 months when dd came along) but second children generally seem so much more chilled out and i am sure thats the reason why!!!

WOW! i will keep any other tips to myself or i will be here all day!

Chooster · 22/02/2007 11:58

Hello ladies - Gosh, you go away for a day ot two and I've needed 20mins to catch up - Great exceuse not to be doing work! Totally agree with what you guys have said about this thread - its all so familiar and lovely to be chatting to you all. The due in July thread is lovely but there must be 40 or so people on there.

Thanks for passing on my news MrsMcJ - My scan went really really well. The baby was in a fab position (sorry Bodders!) and we got such an amazing view of everything - including his willy!!! I asked if we could find out the gender and at one point the consultant said "Well we are looking at the gender... there's the bottom..." And to be honest she didn't need to finish the sentence as there were his little bits for all to see. His dignity is alreay lost and he isn't even born . So this will be our second boy. I know I would have been thrilled either way and we were just so happy that the baby was healthy. All in all it was a wonderful experience.

So, about names - I can totally understand people not wanting to share the names they've chosen but can someone help me with boys names - I had about 5 or so I liked for a girl but I just can't think of any boys names I like.

Kitkat - Sorry you are feeling poorly - As everyone has said it will definately pass - And that first meal out once you start feeling better will be amazing!!! Having MS for a while really does make you appreciate feeling well again. I'm sure it'll be just round the corner for you.

Bugger.... Got to go to a meeting - Do they not know I'm in the middle of a mammoth post on MN? ... I'll be back in a bit xxx

greedyforbabies · 22/02/2007 12:01

just read that back. it sounded like we would leave dd in her cot awake for a couple of hours!!!!! we DIDN'T do that!!! i meant if she had been up for a few hours and was due for a sleep then we would put her down whether she seemed tired or not!

having said all that, this poor babe of mine will just get thrown in and out of the car all the time when i am taking ds to nursery and dd to preschool! no routines this time for me then!!!

greedyforbabies · 22/02/2007 12:04

Choosterchops - how about cole for a boy? i love that name but dh doesn't! what is your other boy called?? the names have to sound good together dont they! two little boys how cute!!!! YIPPEE!!!

NattyThomasandBump · 22/02/2007 12:06
